"new" Dry Foods At Our Local Pet Food Place
JulesP replied to Katdogs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Used Proplan for years, mainly the Sensitive one, with no problems. Dogs had lovely coats and held weight well. Tried Great Barko and ended up with an itchy dog. -
During the module phase you really can't afford to miss a week unless you can do the training at home. I had done my weave training at home so just had to demonstrate it to pass. Not many people pass each module in the four weeks.
-
We do 4 weeks of prep, then 4 weeks on each bit of equipment (30 min sessions) including jumps. Weaves and contacts have 2 levels. Some of the equipment is done together ie tables & tyres was one module. Then 6 weeks sequencing before we go into intermediate class. You have to pass a test for each piece of equipment. Some people might have to do multiple modules of the one piece of equipment. Last night in the intermediate class they had a full agility course set up, a Greg Derrett jumping grid and 2 smaller courses (a dog walk & jumps and a weaves & jumps). We rotated through the 4 courses. I usually get home pretty knackered! Then the triallers/instructors go over the same courses but help each other.

I Think Im Getting Too Old For All This
JulesP replied to MonElite's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
White pants?? You are nuts! -
She passed her Contacts module last night so just advanced weaves to go before we do sequencing.
-
Yep was much smoother. Depending on whether she picks up speed I might end up doing running contacts in a comp.

Moved to a drop after the A Frame tonight which worked well.

Have ran into a problem from food throwing!! Have been using Good Os as they have a bit of weight in them and the dogs are going nuts for them as they don't have junk food! Yesterday whilst doing a run through Poppy was sniffing leaves! They were Good O colour :p
-
Congrats on your pass Janba. Don't think it is a confidence thing with Poppy. Her aim is to get the sheep not moving. The sheepies yesterday didn't want to follow me. I got them moving in the end. This is when it would be good to have your own sheepies, so you can have a play around with stuff. I am always aware of time at clinics and don't want to be a sheep hog!
-
Just back from today's clinic and I am soooo stuffed. All I can say about started is O...M....G....! Going to take a lot of training before I go anywhere near a trial for a while. Actually I was ok when the sheepies were moving. Ran into a bit of trouble when the sheepies decided not to move and Poppy thought that was marvelous! Picture Poppy in one end a Z shute and the sheep in the other end! Stalemate. Homework is working on getting her to walk up. Need sheepies for that though as she does it well minus the sheep. Also met SuperMinty!

Doggie is a sheltie so is supposed to be behind! She is just doing what comes natural. My mum's sheltie also liked to poke the back of our legs with her pointy little nose Couple of things. When you reward after the good 1 or 2 steps, don't ask for a sit. Keep your left leg back and reward. You want to reward the heeling and not the sit. If you ask for the sit she will think that is what the treat is for. I like to throw the treat forward for a lagging dog. That seems to really get them up and happy. So walk a few steps, click & chuck treat forward.

Behavioral Issues After Starting Herding
JulesP replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks Piper. Had Poppy tied up tonight at agility, next to her brother. She was not impressed and was growling and carrying on. We both just ignored her. She is one strange little dog. -
Passed my weaves module so woohooo!!!!! I love this dog's work ethic!
-
I think the whole measuring system needs work!! Seems to be a total pain.
-
Well during the judges talk at the beginning of the day she said that it wasn't a training day but a trial! So I got scared and figured I had better think of it like a trial.

Behavioral Issues After Starting Herding
JulesP replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks corvus. I do think it is a resource guarding/I love my mummy thing. I am now looking at the problem in the stay as a one off problem (it could happen again if she feels threatened) and separate from the snapping. Poppy is super, super devoted to me. The very first time I saw her she bolted away from the other pups and threw herself at my feet. She then did not leave me alone the whole time I was there. It means I have a dog that works brilliantly for me. But does come with some issues. I reckon all great animals have some issues though, lol. Maybe that is because I had Arabian horses! -
Thanks! I soooo badly wanted to pass this class. I did think it was a bit greedy though after getting my PT the day before. I would like to pass some agility modules, a couple of weeks early, tomorrow but that is being super greedy!

Behavioral Issues After Starting Herding
JulesP replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
When standing around chatting and not giving her a job to do she was still snapping. So walk into class and she is all happy and says hello to everyone fine, whenever there was a lull in activity she thought about snapping at whoever was near her. I don't think the other dogs know what her problem is either! Most try to play with her. -

Happy to report that I had no issues with stays this week. She was still bossy when I was relaxing. Worked perfectly around the other dogs, including during some social interaction walking stuff. -
Another small brag. Poppy passed her trial class at dog club this morning. It is quite a full on test involving a formal retrieve, food refusal, jumping, stays, on & off lead heeling, recall, distance signals, targeting, position in motion, social interaction heeling, stand for exam. So phewwwww!

You ok RosieFT?

Trial was today and.... 2 passes in PT so PT title Also got awarded Most Promising Dog, so pretty happy. Poppy was a good girl. I found PT easier than HT as I knew were I was going, lol. Now going to start working towards doing Started Have a clinic next weekend, so I am probably officially going a bit nuts on the herding . Again there was a great atmosphere at the trial.
-
Wooo Shoey & Ed!! Well done. Congrats to everyone else too. Poppy & I got 2 passes in Pre-Trial herding today so got our PT title! Poppy also got Most Promising Dog, so that was pretty cool.

Rather than the bath I would be looking for shops to take her to. She had probably forgotten the bath by that stage. Petstock Lilydale have a bath. Pet Goods Direct at Chirnside don't have a bath but are super animal friendly. I would go into such a shop, tell the staff what happened and hopefully they will make such a fuss of your pup that she will be fine. I would go somewhere today.
