Reddii I was actually originally answering Heidi in the context of this video which shows a couple of different ways of doing a serpentine. Several of methods shown would fit with the Derrett method. I think that was what Heidi was asking about. If it wasn't Heidi, apologies.
-
Pippi you asked why I would move back to the middle. I didn't move back to the middle, I sent from the middle. No movement occurred. Not confused LP
-
lol at Reddii! Your videos are nice and clear. to the photographer.
-
You could use a front cross or a threadle arm or sometimes a rear cross for the same obstacle. Some might be quicker but all would be correct within the system.
-
I think you need to be consistent with your handling system but I know within the Derrett system there are different ways of handling the same thing.
-
I *think* I do the post turn, rear cross #2. Good video!

I didn't move back to the middle before the dog had committed, I sent from the middle. As in I sent from near the right side of the tunnel and then I moved to a middle position and sent from there.

Didn't have a problem this morning. Sent her in on the right arm a couple of times. Did the threadle maneuver but made sure that I moved over to the right enough that my arm was directly pointing to the tunnel. Then moved back to the middle and in she went.

Me & Shoey will need to be ring side with now! Tis tradition you know!
-
I do actually really like the Derrett system

Yer dogs are fine over jumps. Just not going into the tunnel. Wish the dogs could just say what the problem is! Have I driven you all nuts yet?? A tip for people - don't try this line of debate at dog school - it is not appreciated!!!!

Hey I competed last weekend! Just not in obedience

Yes what trial????
-
Don't have the problem doing serpentines over jumps.
-
That is what they don't like. Left arm to right side.
-
Both dogs come in ok with the threadle arm. It is the send after that is causing issues. Both dogs are going to the entrance of the tunnel and stopping. I can only assume that it is because I am not supporting the movement into the tunnel. I am standing in the middle of the 2 entrances. Send to the left entrance from there is fine. Threadle arm they come in, I ask to go to the right entrance and they don't seem to want to go in. Both are novice dogs.

My life would not be worth living! The Derrett method is the preferred method at my club.
-
It just feels weird sending from the left into the right hand side of the tunnel! My preference would be to do a front cross to get them on the right side and send from there. When they are on the right I feel like I am sending them straight. When they are on the left I feel like they are flicking away. It is all a feel thing!
-
I think it is the correct line that I am having problems with. I want to send them from my right side so feel weird sending from the left.
-
I don't know why but it feels really clumsy trying to get them in the right hand side of the tunnel with my left arm. I have to be in the wrong position, facing the wrong way of something.
-
Dog is on left. The threadle arm has successfully called the dog away from the left tunnel entrance and towards me. I then lift right arm to send into right side of tunnel and both dogs are going ummm what? Is it because the dogs need to be further on my right, for the right arm to take effect? If I do a front cross I don't have the problem. Think it could also be body/shoulder position??? This is when border collies aren't easy to train as they expect you to do it right! They have obviously been watching Derrett videos when I am not around as I think they have a better grasp of it then me

One of my old horsey friends was at the comp too and we had a good chat about how glad we were not to be at a horse comp in that sort of weather! Not having to go home and fix soggy wet gear. Or unpack etc! The dogs are sooo much easier. No I don't have sheep but could actually do with a couple for grass chomping! Have 4 acres. I would need to re-do the boundary fencing though. The next level is PT Pre-Trial. Still pretty easy I guess compared to 'real' herding. Does involve going through gates and penning the sheep though. You need to get 2 passes with 2 different judges and then you move up to the trial level. Would like to have a go at this level.

This will be easy to explain...not! Ok you have a horseshoe shaped tunnel. You have come from the left. The dog needs to go into the right hand side of the tunnel. You use a threadle arm not a front cross. Left arm brings in, right arm sends into the tunnel. Is that right? If that is right do you aim to have the dog come to your right hand side with the threadle?? Or is the dog still more on the left when you send. Neither dog will send from the right arm when they are more on the left. Which might be how it should be!! Does that make sense at all??
