  1. Why are you worried about Southern then?
  2. Croydon has a restricted breeds ban too as they are a VCA affiliated club.
  3. I guess I am thinking about the reward line starting immediately after the poles, not before the poles. That is how all of SG diagrams has it anyhow. If Poppy has had any angst about the entry then I have rewarded her straight away, as her nose passes the poles. And you know how you rotate the poles around?? I think we have rotated around too. So she is going straight between the first 2 poles. And because she was coping with that I didn't think about straight on. it was when I had her on a wait and went to call her through the poles that I could see that she couldn't find her way from straight on. And straight on is probably how I will run most courses. Just thought I would mention it in case other people skipped the 'easy' stuff.
  4. Ness I had done no entries from the thin slice of the pie. Therefore Poppy had never gone in straight on. Am I helping anyone here or just making a dick of myself?
  5. Make sure you train the easy entries too! I hadn't done any straight on with Poppy and she didn't know what I wanted, .
  6. I use the tug it starter from Clean Run. It is made of mesh and if you put soft food in it the food sort of oozes out.
  7. Poppy offers nose touches at interesting times ie she nose touches her dinner bowl and if not watched will go around and nose touch other people's nose touch plates at agility but that is all kind-of cute!! Got a bit of nose touching of the dumbbell at first when I was using the plastic one, switched to the wood one and she stopped that. Can now use the white plastic one again.
  8. Considering I say that I don't shape I have actually shaped quite a few things! Touching was done by shaping. She does the agility nose touches but will also go and touch a plate a couple of meters away. I did retrieve using the shaping method. Have just been doing weavers using shaping. I didn't lure in any of the above but I do have trouble keeping quiet Lucky the dog understand english so 'Mummy would like you to pick up the dumbbell' made sense to her
  9. I think your Sheer Magic clippers must be dodgy as mine have been great. They keep their charge for ages and I have no trouble using them when plugged in.
  10. Because Poppy thinks she has to hold on to the dumbbell regardless. I have very serious border collies!
  11. I did wish I had one last night. Also did some retrieve work. Decide to try the two toy game..... Chucked the dumbbell, she ran and got that, chucked the toy and she ran off to get that but with the dumbbell still in her mouth Watching her trying to pick up the toy with the dumbbell still in her gob was hilarious! What did I learn? Don't use the dumbbell to play 2 toy game as she knows she isn't supposed to drop it! bad mummy!
  12. Well obedience you want the dog heeling close and looking at you. Agility you want them working at a lateral distance and being able to focus ahead on the jumps. I couldn't do agility with border no2, Fern, as she basically crashed into everything due to looking at me. I wish had a dog like that now, she was an amazing heeler. You have to think about your turns to avoid your blind crosses. Nothing that can't be worked through. When I do my shadow heeling I use a lets go command so that Poppy knows that we aren't doing formal heeling. I do the old left about turn so am not going to get my knickers in a knot if she blind crosses me. I don't feel like I have lost connection or that she is going to run off and do her own thing!
  13. I have eased off the obedience and decided not to start trialling whilst I am training Poppy for agility. Our clubs agility program is fairly full on and I just wouldn't have time to finesse the obedience. There are some things that cause a conflict in the 2 sports. I am also doing herding and some conflicts come in there with agility too.
  14. I think an important thing to remember is that Greg and Susan will change things around if they need to for a particular dog. That is why they are great trainers!
  15. I'll just talk to myself Poppy weaved 4 poles in a straight line last night So that is 4 poles in 5 days. I am wondering if I am not chucking her ball quick enough as she is a tad slow going through the weaves because she is waiting for the throw. I am not throwing it until she is pretty much through the poles as I don't want to throw it and then have her pop out and cheat. Don't want to call her off the toy as she is just getting her confidence with playing.
  16. I've got the Sheer Magic clippers and they are going well. Have used them on the border collies, horses and Birman cats! Would buy another pair.
  17. My club teaches vet handling techniques in pre-puppy, puppy and continuing into basic 1. I usually do it at the end of class, starting with calming techniques which does involve restraining the dog. Not sure that positive or negative training really comes into it as I haven't had a pup yet that needs to be 'trained'. All are happy to lay in their owners laps.
  18. This would be the dog that wasn't trainable??? Could only do flyball?? lol, looks good Maybe get her to come in a bit closer?
  19. Cute video Smisch! Sounds good Ness! I did 3 short training sessions today, definitely works doing the shorter sessions. In the last session Poppy corrected herself to go in the correct way, which made me pretty happy! Also found a toy that she really likes! A stress ball that she pinched from work! Obviously I can't tug with it but got some animation!
  20. Looking good! I need to get me a video camera!
  21. The poles weren't super far apart. Almost like I had skipped a pole. Maybe that is the problem. SG had hers quite far apart. I now have them at normal distance just rotated. Next step will be to close the rotation.
  22. Poppy started to want to enter at the second set of poles. I think because she knows the reward is at the end! I went back to rewarding at the first set of poles and she looked like she was getting it. When I trained Brock I used the channel method. I worked at getting him through the poles first and when he had understanding of that, started to do the harder entries. Poppy is already doing the hardest entries I set for Brock. Interesting.
  23. You can chuck food rather than the toy. Just need food that they can find easily! The starter tug (mesh tug) is good for chucking for dogs that aren't super into toys.
