  2. lol yes shoey will point you in the right direction
  3. i buy kidnet liver and heart in the supermarket wehn its on special for fifty cents and then cook it in the fry pan with a little water dogs love it and it is healthy
  4. try a hot wire around the top of the fenc or an angled wire coming in from near the top on a 45 degree angle
  5. how old is he is he sore always check medicals first three dogs can really upset a household everything is changing and now the third dog has been theer a little while hes probabaly starting to find his place Nova obviously feels he needs to be more competitive with food if hes gulping it down has the other dog stolen from him and what was your dogs reaction to nova taking the bone
  6. cool thast what i was wondering i though anything over ten would be more risky for having problems down the trck i know you can manage these things really well these days but why start behind the eight ball
  7. thast what im asking ys some dogs will not have probs with high score and others with low scores may have problems but i would assume that would only be the case to an extent when looking performance dogs that will be working hard in agility obedience and th field obviously the lower the score the better but what would eb the highest score you would accept yes i can see ven would matter as then they will bear weight evenly so to speak
  8. ok say brittany but forgetting averages thinking of the actual hip if a dogs is above say ten would ist still be a good performance dog or can it be higher and still not have problems later
  9. thast true but wheres the cut of is 13 good ok very good when do you start to think thast pretty bad
  10. Hi i look at hip scores and they say 13 or 6 etc what is the classification for really good hips
  11. dont suppose anyone would lend me a copy have been wanting to see them but dot have the dollars to get them
  12. your dogs not psycho though i do agree he prbbaaly needs a lot more foundation work and less course time at present
  13. i havent but would love to see the heeling one
  14. why bother i used to feel that way but thn i realised i enjoy being part fo the dog world and things ar changing i guess it depends on how much you enjoy trianing your own dogs i love tkaing mine out every week catching up with friends and swapping ideas ive met great people in the dog world plenty of people do jobs for free my sons footy coach and trianers dont expect to get paid nor his athletics coach he charges them 2 dollars to cover the cost of insurance and hire of facilities thats it. Some people like to share their knowledge and dont expect paymnt in return just seeing someone have success is enouhg for them. Tere are plenty of so called qualified trainers that also have only trianed one or two dream puppies and charge a fortune and give crap advice and tere are those who trin all sorts of dogs to titles who have very good sound behavioural knowledge i think in this world where evrything is becoming expensive its nice to know there are epople out there willing to share without getting paid to do so
  15. snobby i know what you mean some clubs get so caught up in politics they cant see what they are losing out on the thing im always trying to impress at our club is that everyone has somehting to offer and if we treat people with an open welcoming attitude it is surprising what they will bring to the table. Our club still has politics but they are much friendlier than other places ive been what they lack in experience they make up for in friendliness and i really enjoying going there to the poin that we never seem to leave before lunch time I have made a point of not listening to whining if someone comes to me to complain about something i try to find something constructive they can do to help rectify the problem For example someone was complaining about the lack of knowledge of some instructors i asked them if they were willing to instruct they sad no as they have three dogs to trian fair enough im in the same boat so i suggested maybe they could come help out at instructor trianing teaching the instructors how better to use the tools they have they were flattered that their experience was welcome and that they could contribute with out affeting their own training time . i also have a couple of people looking into running some trick days etc because it interests them and they were complaining classes were boring. WE also are running a special night for instructors to trian their dogs so they dont miss out and are planning to bring in some really good people to help them with their dogs so they get something special for giving up their time A club is place for pople with similar interests to get together and sare ideas if we keep that in mind it keeps things in perspective who knows next year we might even get a puppy class am looking at seeing if any delta trainees are interested in running one and maybe a clicker class but one thing at a time and slowly we go
  16. lol im the same i go to club pay my fees use the equipment help out with ots of things but i dont instruct i do belive in putting back into the club but in my own way and with too many dgs to trian i really dont have time to instruct however we are starting a night class soon and i will be running a trialing group then and basic agility i think splus trianing for the instructors which to me is helping at the most important level teaching the instructors
  17. for me dog trianing is about challenging myself im always trying new things and experimenting to find what works best for me. at the moment i ave a fox terrier pup that is very independent had no socialisation we got her at 16 weeks and was still running wit litter mates in a kennel only human contact was when she was fed. this has oened a whole new set of problems im aiming to eventually have several breeds from each ankc group to the highest level i can in obedience tracking and what ever else they can do heidi the foxie will be doing earthdog forinstance im a big beleiver in giving dogs oulets to use there natural desire. however im a crap instrucor i forget that not everyone will put in the time i do not everyone has the timing i do and not everyone has has the foundations i have taught mine so if i takea higher class they hate it coz i go back to basics focus and distraction training rather than their usual marching up and down they say make them work too hard lol
  18. its from koehlers book so im not surprised people belive so much written in books without questioning the logic behind them
  19. not me apart from the sheltie ive always looked at the more obscure obedience propects and risen to the challenge
  20. i only know two clubs that insist on use of food and i agree i think you need to have balance however many clubs are still very traditional they will say we accept all methods then go straight to correction when a problem arises and many are still in the throes of correction only its the hardest thing for a newbie to find a club that understands and allows the andler to make some of the decisions for thei dog and them so what the OP wants to ask is were to find a well rounded club that teaches agility
  21. They may not be interested in competing Thast a fair point *If they do compete, they may not be as serious about winning you dont need to win to gain a pass only gain a certain score you dontveen have to place *Some compete for the social outing rather than to win at all costs as said you dnthave to win and so it is always social *They may not have the time to put into their own dogs to train them to competition level standards but they really enjoy helping others achieve their goals. novice level is a well behaved everyone should have time to trian their dog to be well behaved i wouldnt ask for help wit trial work if the person hadnt trialled *Titles may not be the end goal of their training program. For example, there are no titles to compete for for assistance dogs or guide dogs for the blind, or excellent family pets where manners and loose lead walking are more important than precise heelingAll these dogs would be capable of gaining novice and an assistance dog would definately go further these organisations howeer have their own testing though in the states a few poeple are trialing their self trained assistance dog and one couple their guide dogs Will compete with injured dogs on pain killers very few triallers dont put their dogs needs first and those that do are frowned upon by the rest there are plenty of epople at dog club working injured dogs and they dont even know they are because that havent developed that level of understanding *Believe that the best way to deal with dog aggressive dogs is to put 2 of them together and punish them when they react. plenty of non trialling instructors belive this too this has nothing to do with triallers *Believe that the alpha roll is the way to punish a dog for dog aggression again this is a traditional training thing not a trial thing in fact most riallers are moving way from these methoods these days *Do not assess the dog before implementing a training program.Actually most trial people haev been around a long time and are very god at assessing a dog one club lodst their triallers through polistics found they also lost the good dog people and were left with inexperinced instructors who couldnt read dogs *Will write a dog off as a possible obedience competitor without considering that it may need a different training method, meaning that if you have a problem dog and end up in a class instructed by them they will basically tell you to get rid of the dog, or the dog will never be any good. that also goes both ways plenty of instructors in general write dogs off because they arent simple to train and many trial epople love the challenge of finding new ways to work with different dogs Most triallers have been around a long time work hard and spend hours trianing studying and learning about dogs we are a very dedicated bunch and are most are always looking for new ideas Your genralisations are more based arund traditional trainers not just trial people who are more and more moving to mdern training techniques. Maybe youve be unfortunate to meet the wrong trial people
  22. thanks helen Lets not turn this into a trial bashing session most of the trainers i know have titled a least one dog and all dogs should be capable of gaining novice. There are plenty of instructors who dont title dogs that are idiots too remember that and at least if a person has managed to title a dog it shows they are at least able to trian to a certain level. i love my dogs and we train positively we have a lot of fun and trial to see how we are going and to show that it can be done without harsh methods when joining a new club it is usually the policy to put people a little lower than where they are at as even if your dog can do the exercises you may not be familiar with the finer points the club requires to go to the trial level class. And someone who has titled a dog has already shown they do
  23. i agree with DD if i was looking for a trianer because i trial id only use someone who can produce a team that will be successful in the ring
