Upper Motor Neurone Disease - Tamar update
persephone replied to Loving my Oldies's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh dear, poor little darling....and poor 'Mum'.you're copping it this year. So sorry. Wheels?I wouldn't do it, if her brain is affected to the extent she is ending up under and between things, wheels won't help. You know when a dignified old dog has deserved peace and an end to confusion and pain....allowing a disease to progress? Not sure if that's a dignified way to taper off the life of a dear little scrap like Tamar. -
I know you look after your dogs if you did get him under eight weeks it's the seller who has done the irresponsible thing ..not the buyer . Your little guy is fortunate- he has experienced and caring owners. So many pups rehomed earlier than optimum never really learn "doggy manners" and other things - so are often set up for lots of mistakes with inexperienced owners it can be very sad to then hear about problems as they grow . Unfortunately, you did "round down" ;) a bit of an 'oops' with those here who really just want the best start for new pups and owners . Hoping you will post a few photos of the new baby - and of your puppy "Disneyland " .

BRILLIANT . Change toys/penscape often ..and use scents to make it interesting too A sand box for digging and burying snax ... sounds great !

WHO sold you a puppy this young ? Puppies are not supposed to be sold until at least 8 weeks.

Nope..you have an itchy dog Undiagnosed cause. Been there, Done that. Frustrating, upsetting, annoying, costly, worrying.... the thing with skin rashes is that they can often relate to things which are INHALED and /or EATEN . It can be a very long and tedious process if it is an allergy .Elimination diets etc .... And it can often be the most minute trace of a substance which sets off a reaction ..that then takes a couple of days to resolve itself ... ( I have allergies as well) BREATHE . Write down a comprehensive list of every ingredient in dog food, treats/and scraps he gets. what fabric/s does he sleep on/walk on? what grasses are in the yard and seeding? (ask at a nursery maybe) Any trees/shrubs flowering? next door? Do you use any air fresheners/insect sprays ? Did you/ do you spray anything on yr carpets ? With what do you clean the areas on which he sleeps most? all that sort of thing..... *sigh*

Has the vet mentioned/done skin scrapings for Malassezia ? This is a yeasty, itchy smelly skin infection. there is the possibility Puppy might be allergic to any one of a million things LIKE A meat protein beef, lamb or chicken A grain ..corn, or wheat , an artificial colouring a carpet deodoriser/cleaner laundry detergent seeding grasses the list is almost endless:(

Welcome , little Maisie.... She is just lovely - and looks to have handled her involved transfer very well ! She looks robust and very sweet ...looking forward to lots of photos and tales . How wonderful for you, rascal

those 'electronic fences ' (my opinion only ) are fine to stop dogs just wandering around a yard, but I doubt they would stop a dog with a high prey drive .the millisecond zap would be well worth the excitement/reward of chasing/eating chooks . No worse than getting scratched by wire netting, really . I may be wrong - but I have seen some determined dogs !

Dog owners angry they were sold puppies with genetic conditions

My Mitchel (Xbreed) had a bad luxating patella , so yes, I had surgery done for him . Why watch him freeze every time his knee locked and he couldn't run ? Sure I could pop it back ..but he had many years of pain free racing around, working sheep , bunny chasing etc post-surgery, with no problems in the other knee or anything . -
yes ..his lab Rosie Cheeks has had a litter and yes
-
Not sure about negotiating price .... is there a pup WITHOUT the problem ? A puppy having surgery prior to rehoming does not sound a good thing to me . Mind you, I have no idea if this is a common thing among this breed- but it doesn't sound good for conformation .

EXCELLENT !!! No more trauma

....right.... Oh Dear ... -
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I worked at a vet and we did heaps ..they are stitched etc afterwards to stop them refilling .....and of course have to wear a cone they do refill if the blood vessels/tissues aren't closed/squashed flat and kept that way it makes a 'cauliflower ear ' a few of our old workers had untreated haematomas in their day , and ended up with twisted ears ... not painful, just discomfort ..they didn't seem to worry about them much .
-
Trouble with them is that often they feel funny- dog shakes head/scratches...and they get larger That's why they're usually drained /stitched flat etc .

YOU need to teach her to toilet onlead, and to NOT bounce around like a fool on lead. You are the human ... perhaps begin with several short/sharp obedience sessions a day ..just a few minutes - away from distractions , using plenty of rewards ... so you get a good line of communication happening ..and she starts to listen . Also EVERYTIME she toilets (yes, you will need to follow/watch her) use a cue work, with praise . use a word you will be happy using in public ..like "quick", or "busy" or one of your own . She will learn that the word means toilet time , then when ON LEASH, say the word, and toileting happens. This may take some time..not going to happen in a week or so ...

I concur. You won't find anyone better . Phone him in the meantime - he may give you a strategy ...while waiting .

Some info for you : HERE HERE

Collar/lead training ASAP I always like pairing this with a nice bone of some sort ..so leash on = chicken wing or similar
-
may I interrupt the flow of EXCELLENT information to go AWWWWWWWWW That is one cute fluffy baby. By all means offer him a chicken wing or lamb rib and see how he fares just leave him with it . I love feeding puppies fresh raw meat - it seems to "bring out the wolf" in them The other information is from places of much experience, and is well worth a try . best of luck with your little one. Hope he gets vaccinated very soon.

Aren't dogs supposed to display some of their owners' traits? ;)
