  1. I have no idea about the legalities, however I would never leave a dog unsupervised in a year that had open fencing such as described. It's not just about your dog biting people but also what people (not just the kids posted about) could do to your dog.
  2. I don't like my dogs licking me. It feels horrible. Indy has no interest in licking and just doesn't do it. He does however press his nose right into your face which is kind of cute. Kira is a compulsive licker and would lick you all day if you let her. She controls herself somewhat with us as we make her stop but she does sneak in cheeky licks here and there. We tell her to sit and wait for her dinner but if you bend to close to her face when you are putting her bowl down she has been known to get in a sneaky lick right across your face. As gross as it is, it's also kind of cute.
  3. I pretty much just like all animals and there is not really any animal I would say I dislike. I've never had a cat of my own and don't see us getting one in the near future as our dogs would just eat a cat.
  4. When we first got Indy we only wanted wolf grey and white as it was what we had in our heads when it came to Alaskan Malamutes. These days I love the black and whites and the red and whites just as much and wouldn't really care about the colour of any future dogs we get.
  5. Everything I've written about has occurred when walking along the footpath on a suburban street where it is the law for all dogs to be on leash. I never ever go anywhere near off leash areas. If you want your off leash dog to work things out with my on leash dog I can guarantee you that your dog will come off second best and it won't be pretty.
  6. My dog weighs 50kg and I couldn't pick him up if my life depended on it. So I'm pretty sure my picking him up is not what is causing the issue. The issue is I am obeying the law by walking my dog on lead and under my control where as the person who thinks their dog is Paris Hilton and lets it invade my dog's personal space is not.
  7. I LOVE that poster. It feels like that is the story of my dog walking life and it's reassuring to know that others are in the same boat.
  8. I have a DINO and I can totally relate. I've hidden between parked cars, retreated up strange driveways and have crossed roads when not really safe to do so in order to get away from MDIFs.
  9. I think my dog is broken. I think his thunder shirt does calm him a little, however it has not totally fixed the problem.
  10. I'm really sorry for your loss.
  11. I'm the same. Walking Kira on her own is always enjoyable, however add Indy to the mix and I have to be forever vigilant about what other people are doing with their dogs.
  12. Wow!!! You both look amazing and it looks like so much fun!
  13. Matthew, can you not see the correlation between the type of person the owner was and the aggressive behaviour the dog displayed? The parts in bold are not behaviours that normal responsible members of society display. Lots of people have claimed that whenever there is a report of a dog attack that they are not surprised by the breed of dog. It’s not actually the breed of dog that stands out to me it’s the demographic of the owner. They tend to live in a low socio-economic area, are very poorly spoken and look as rough as anything. Say we do get rid of Pitbulls and they become extinct as you have said you’d like. These people are still going to want dogs and whatever breed they get, I can’t see them magically owning a dog that is a model canine citizen just because it’s a different breed.
  14. Meh, it's their loss and not yours. So much better to find that out now than have to deal with the idiots once you have you puppy. Alwyn looks gorgeous.
  15. A big Happy Birthday to Atlas. He is so cute. :D
  16. Where do you get your info Matthew?Obviously the nightly news and the internet.Where do you come to the conclusion that pitbulls are involved in more deaths than any other breed?Like I said before no Purebred American Pitbull Terrier has been involved in a fatality in this country to date so dont worry what happens in the US. Your ignorance is astounding and the fact that you still think how a dog is raised has nothing to do with it shows you do not understand dogs or the basics of ownership and therefore I dont think you should own a dog at all.You keep saying fighting dog,the dog was a crossbreed it was not an American pitbull Terrier you and the media conveniently keep overlooking that fact. I agree with the dogs being restricted.I agree with tougher penalties for owners whose dogs attack but I have had that opinion for a long time and have written submissions to the DLG stating such. The problem is they took the easiest and least effective and cheapest way out.Like I have said before a million times they will not eradicate pitbulls from the Australian landscape. We are a decade on from BSL and what has changed? If you cant stop it then control it and remove the breed specific part and make owners responsible. For a start councils should inspect premises where dogs are to be kept and if they will be properly contained if not no licence issued and you have 28 days to provide containment and comply or you forfeit dogs or move from that area. I'll refer you to a previous post... Pitbull (all types) attacks: 1,392 Pitbull (all types) deaths: 137 Pitbull (all types) maimings: 734 http://www.scribd.com/doc/11249213/Dog-Attack-Deaths-Maimings-US-Canada-September-1982-to-January-2008 Some of you are getting very hung up on the statistics but are forgetting that the numbers are only using one measure and that is breed. I would bet that if when analysing the attacks in the above statistics that if as well as breed we also included a few measures about the owner of the dog such as IQ, highest level of education and income we’d see some pretty interesting correlations.

  18. Info on measuring on this page, hope the link works! http://www.petsprovidore.com.au/thundershirt.html?mode=add&page=&amount=1 Thanks guys, he is over 50kg so looks like xx large is the go.
  19. Perfect timing for this to be revisited as I've had Indy stressing and driving himself mental for last couple of hours. Just looking at them on Pets1 - does anyone know what the sizing is like. I'm thinking of getting on for my male Alaskan Malamute but I have no idea of his chest measurements and don't have a tape measure. I was just going to get the xx-large but wondering if it might be too big.
  20. I hunted around to find a couple of short leashes (not your usual 6ft ones) and they just stay attached to the harnesses all the time as I never use them for anything else.
