  1. My dogs swim twice a day, every day & have no trouble with the Advantix. I keep them out of the water for 48 hours after I apply it though. They do get the odd grass tick & they have to be done no later than every 14 days. Cant wait for a generic version to become available in Australia. I am sure what the manufacturers charge for Advantix or Frontline Plus is not reflective of production cost. I know they have high research & development costs but these sort of things have been around for decades for cattle etc. Advantix is waterproof and has registered claims for that effect also, and there is no need to apply more often if your dog swims everyday. Re generics: Advantix is not due off patent for another 3 years in Australia. There is no TRUE generic for it ANYWHERE in the world. The add you linked to has differing quantities than advantix the real one. Frontline generics are available in australia already. It is sold in supermarkets under a different name now, Also as stated, other brand names have already been registered and are stocked in some pet outlets and online. Advantix is by far proven more effective than frontline too ie efficacy Advantage family products for fleas is 100% Ticks 98% Frontline Fleas 57% and ticks 52%. The problem with generics both human and animal, is research and development of products is entirely funded by the major pharma co's. When generic co's jump in and take on active ingredients, package and distribute products they sometimes reduce the amount of ingredients to cost cut under a guise. They also operate under poor conditions in some very dodgy locations. Also no $ are returned to the originating Pharma Co to fund new research, development, science or projects. How long can the major Co's sustain this? Generics are damaging to health. Cheap is not always best. Hope this helps Oh and patents for Pharmacueticals can be up to 16 years.
  2. Buying Pharmacueticals from overseas is illegal and the meds could be seized by customs upon entry to Australia.
  3. www.stefmar.com.au or trixan pet products are very competitive.
  4. Jervis bay is a serious, heavy tick prone area. Perhaps you should do a test patch on a hip area using Advantix. Try 1 small drop and watch for 12 hours. If no reaction apply remaining pipette. Also you can use a Kiltix collar HOWEVER it takes 24 hours to disseminate and you would remove it for swimming therfore taking ANOTHER 24 hours for dissemination after replacing collar after swiming. there is NO oral treatment available for Paralysis ticks. remember to apply Advantix at least 48 hours before arrival in tick prone area and to apply fortnighty for continuous protection. Advantix kills and REPELS paralysis ticks and all flying and biting insects.
  5. Or just spray with Coopex for 3 months fly free (mozzie silverfish etc etc etc )surfaces! http://www.dolforums.com.au/public/style_emoticons/default/thumbsup1.gif
  6. Just as an aside to your queries, I (myself) Human variety suffer from A serious Auto Immune Disease and I am on several treatments one of which is immuno suppressant drugs. I have been advised to NEVER RECEIVE VACCINATIONS due to the inability to tolerate or effectively build immunity to such vaccines and the extreme risk of acquiring the vaccine virus. I am also undergoing a radical treatment of an infusion every 8 weeks of a TNF Blocker (similar to Chemotherapy) and it is working (YAY FINALLY) but I suffer NONE of the normal side effects of chemo treatments (ie n hair loss etc etc) I am at extreme high risk of Opportunistic viruses but so far (4 years) touch wood I haven"t even had a cold. I too suffered serious muscle and pain related issues but now am relatively pain free. I would advise you to seek options for Immuno-suppressant treatments for your canine buddy and leave all other treatments alone whilst commencing it. Give a time frame of 4-6 months treatment then review it. It has an accumulative effect so needs time to "kick In" A dog cannot tell you what wrong but I as a human can. It is painful and frustrating and tests caused me more anguish than good. Auto immune diseases are so varied and complex and all behave differently but ALL respond to the same style of radical treatment. I hope this may help you. good luck with your canine freind.......... : (Added) I have been on cortico steroids and pred as well but have weaned off them now (8 months ago). They are the best releif but as your vet advised the side affects are too great to remain on them long term. i am steroid free on the new radical treatment.
  7. Use Advantix. it kills and repels all flies and biting insects as well as fleas and ticks. For fly control apply monthly. To treat the affected ears. bathe in warm salty water, pat dry and apply an antibiotic cream ie savlon ect
  8. Calamine lotion applied to the bites should help releive the itchies. and Advantix monthly to repell mozzies flies biting insects ect and kills if they bite your dog. Hope this helps
  9. I beleive Ambex has now been discontinued and ceased manufacture.. These would/could have been Out of date??
  10. This very topic was recently discussed here. search Splitting Advantix. http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/242494-splitting-advantix/page__p__5984461__hl__advantix__fromsearch__1#entry5984461
  11. At home We built a 1.5 metre high soil mound and planted shrubs all along it to reduce noise (it bounces back into the kennel area) and also to stop the dogs in the kennels from seeing and reacting to the visual of other dogs and or people. It works extremely well and looks fantastic too We continued the mound all around the whole kennel block (along the front and all along the back) as it was a council requirement for approval of our kennels.
  12. Ring the Vet nearest to your home residence and ask how many cases of Paralysis tick poisoning they have treated in the past 12 months and enquire whether there is tick pressure in your immediate area. This will give you an accurate guide as to the tick pressure for your locality. If the number of cases is low, enquire whether these cases were from dogs that may have travelled away from the immediate area where they could have/would have acquired the ticks.
  13. Buy a snood that is fitted for your breed, try www.petcetera.com.au or phone 02 96273838
  14. Sentinel Spectrum DOES NOT do adult Fleas.
  15. The only tick Preventative that is registered for repellency is Advantix. Applied fortnighty. It has a 98% efficacy for Ticks, and 100% for fleas ect. It kills and repels all Ticks (incl. Paralysis) fleas, flies, mosquitos, stable horse flies, midge flies ect. Apply to a dry coat and do not bath or swim for 24 hours after application. After this time it is perfectly fine to swim your dog. Daily checking for ticks is still required. Enjoy your holidays.
  16. Panoramis does not protect for ticks whatsoever.
  17. I appreciate your comments and the responses that Dr Google has come up with for your searches. i will try to explain it in practical terms to allay your concerns. Firstly, science does throw up some "worrying" terms but alas they are technical and are not as sinister as you may interpret them. Pharmasolve N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is a water-miscible polar aprotic solvent with high interfacial activity. It is used as a drug solubilizer and penetration enhancer in human topical dosage forms, and for the same purposes in parenteral and topical veterinary products. Aprotic solvents are those that are not capable of hydrogen bonding. It is not a "solvent" as per the paint stripping type. Far from it. It is human edible and is used in most pharmaceuticals that we consume and use daily. It is non toxic and has no relationship or safety warnings for use in breeding animals because it is perfectly safe to use in these animals, humans and is noted as safe for pregnant and lactacting bitches. It is not the same solvent as a stripping solvent. It is a soluble solvent. So how and why do these preparations need N-methtypyrrolidone? When Advantix (or others) are applied, this assists the product to penetrate the skin layer to move the product to the lipid layer of skin (the layer below the surface), the area where skin cells and hair follicles are developing and originate from, to allow the product to permeate the hair shafts (all of them) and "coat" the hair shafts with the product. The reason that it is advised for large dogs to apply in 3 or more locations along the backline, is to speed the process of disseminating over the ENTIRE dog, ie Small = dog small surface area, Large dog = Large surface area. If you applied it in one spot it would still work just as effectively. The directions for use state clearly, "ONE TUBE treats xx - xx kg" depending on the size of the dog. It does not state "use part tube". It states ONE tube. It also states safe for use in Pregnant and Lactating bitches and gives warnings and minimum age use and other information. The safety of these products is very strictly studied by independent bodies prior to granting of registrations and APVMA approvals. It is proven, safe and effective if used in accordance to the directions, which Never indicate to split the dose. Splitting doses is a bit of an old wives tale and those that have practised it and not had a problem have purely been LUCKY. Re the comment of of paraciticides for Calves. Each product has differing methods of transport and different ingredients. Different species are affected by different parasites and as such are not the same ie Paralysis ticks not affecting host animals ect. Re the manufacture processes of products, Pharmaceuticals are not manufactured like dog foods. They are not necessarily filled from a vat. And the process is undertaken in laborotories under extensive and strict sterile conditions. The filling of the ampoules is a scientific approach not a mass producing production line. T Re the comment that your vet AND the supplier telling you to split doses: This is in direct contravention to the registered use of the product and I would make the warranty of the product VOID. Also the "Supplier" you are referring to would be a distributer of the product with no connection to the manufacturer other than to sell the product. WARRANTY: PURCHASER ASSUMES ALL RISK OF USE AND HANDLING WHERE THE PRODUCT IS NOT USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH DIRECTIONS GIVEN. The information I have provided for you was PURELY to assist the health and well being of animals. These products Pharmaceuticals were originally Veterinary prescription drugs and were prescribed for use by Veterinarians. Being that they are now freely available in Australia as an "Over the counter" product now, it is imperative that consumers are aware of the correct uses of them. This year alone (9 months) has seen more paralysis tick cases reported and treated in vets than for the previous 24 months combined. Protection is the safest and most cost effective method of ensuring your pet is not the next statistic. DAILY SEARCHING is essential even when using protection. NO TICK TREATMENT IS 100% guaranteed. Advantix is 98% efficacy. Parasiticides are safe, non toxic and have been developed for the health and best interests of protecting animals against Death. They work when consumers use correctly and are compliant. (ie applied on time every time). As for where I get my info from. I lecture in parasitology with specific focus on endo and ectoparasites in canines and felines. I study science and animal health and I breed and show dogs worldwide. I am more than happy to provide more information if required. I hope this helps.
  18. Yes NED is still in store although he now seems to work just Part time. He is a stunning representative of the Newfoundland breed. He has a massive fan base too it seems. I too loves that dog.
  19. It is the same scenario for all products that contain and active ingredient of Imidicloprid ie all Advantix, Advocate and Advantage and all products that use N methypyrrolidone as the emulsion. Most topical parasiticides are in this category too. ie Frontline, ect It is an extremely dangerous and stupid practice to save a couple of $ especially in Tick preparations due to the risk of death that can AND DOES result. It is also a main reason why people who do this are the first to complain of poor performance of products such as persistent flea problems and/or tick attachment. The correct dosing is HIGHLY IMPORTANT. The practice of splitting doses indicates that the health of their animals is not of paramount importance and ignorance is asking for trouble. Cost cutting in this manner is playing russian roulette with your animals. I hope this helps save the lives of some canines.
  20. NO IT IS NOT OK> Re the comments above ie Buying an XL dog size and Splitting it by syringe, THIS PRACTICE is extremely dangerous and totally unsafe for tick protection. The active ingredients of Imidicloprid and Permethrin are suspended in an emulsion called methylpyrilliodine. This emulsion DOES NOT "MIX" the active ingredients EVENLY even with shaking The active particles stay self suspended. So by dividing the dose, you may actually be drawing up pure emulsion and NO ACTIVES, thereby giving one dog a dose of NOTHING and the other dog a dose that is for the weight range stated on the packaging. IT IS SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS and absolutely leaving your dogs at risk of DEATH. It is a bit like pouring an alcoholic spirit drink when you see the alcohol at the bottom and the coke on top. The difference being when you mix the drink it stays mixed. Methylpyrilliodine DOES NOT stay mixed EVER. the other additives in topicals are bittering agents to deter other dogs (or children) from tasting or licking off the actives at the time of application, and a stabiliser to assist the product to stay active and keep shelf life until the expiry date of the product.
  21. Just a small bit of info re the pet industry and pet product buying habits of the australian consumers: Pet Products includes foods, vet products, parasite protections, Accessories, Apparel, ect ect. everything EXCEPT LIVE ANIMALS. It includes Canine, Equine, Feline and Small Animals supplies. (NOT FARM ANIMALS SUPPLIES) Online stores account for just 11% of the total Pet product sector incomes and has declined by 7% over the past 4 years. Some statistics for product purchases of PET PRODUCTS (not including LIVE animals) is (as at July 2012): Preferred Purchase venue: Vet = 22% Pet Warehouse/large pet stores 19% Supermarkets 30% Small pet Stores (independents) 9% Online 11% Pharmacy 3% Other (stock feed merchants, Manufacturers, Specialised ect.) 6% Over the past 8 years The Pet industry $spend has Shown a minimal increase (0.9%) Growth which is mostly attributed to price increases and has not shown any decreases. It shows that 30% of consumers shop in Multiple locations. ie show no loyalty. Business is tough for All of the pet sector but most importantly, We (you and I) contribute our $'s to an industry which sits at #4 in Australia's highest $ category's in Business sectors. The Pet Sector is one of only 3 Sectors that have Not shown a decline in income in Australia in the past 8 years and sits proudly as #1 for stability. If you would like more data re the animal industry please ask.
  22. Petbiz in Belrose, Balgowlah<Mona Vale< Narrabeen or Mount Colah. Great range Good pricing Excellent advice. 23. In relation to your original question: Advantix v Tick Collar. Advantix is a topical and is applied fortnight and is the only product available that kills and REPELS ticks and other biting insects. It has an efficacy (efficiency) of 98% and daily searching for Paralysis ticks is ALWAYS recommended for ANY treatments. Tick collars: Have an efficacy (efficiency) Kiltix is 92% kill and 50% repellency. Preventic Efficacy 52% kill and 27% repellency. As you stated you have small children that like to kiss cuddle and could suck the collar it is probably not your product of choice. Collars are extremely good to use in conjunction with Advantix (applied fortnightly) and tick collars are to be replaced each 6 weeks for paralysis ticks. (6 monthly for fleas and other ticks (non paralysis). If a tick collar gets wet it is still effective, but takes a full 24 - 48 hours to dry out and commence redisseminating the active ingredients. So the dog is unprotected during this time. For very high tick pressure areas (ie Coffs harbour, Port Macquarie, Warners Bay, Sydney Northern Beaches, Blue mountains, Grafton and norther coastal areas and Most of QLd) the ultimate protection is advantix fortnightly and a Kiltix collar for 6 weeks and a DAILY tick check (by feel Not visual). Re the comments above ie Buying an XL dog size and Splitting it by syringe, THIS PRACTICE is extremely dangerous and totally unsafe for tick protection. Also Ticks and fleas cannot build immunity against Advantix, advantage or advocate whatsoever. A Flea Susceptibility Study has been completed by a range of independent vets from around the world and the results are available if anyone requires them PM me. Re bathing and topicals. Always apply topicals to a 100% dry dog and do not bath for at least 8 hours (advantage Family products) After that time the product is in place in the lipid layer of skin which is waterfast for the full period of time stated between applications. It is preferable that you shampoo in a soap free shampoo. DO NOT USE FLEA SHAMPOOS. they are not required. The actives of Imidicloprid are 100% effective against fleas for the full 1 month after application. Imidicloprid kills fleas and ticks on contact within 3 - 5 minutes. Frontline has different active ingredients (fipronil) and behaves and works totally different. It has no repellency against ticks or fleas and the fleas still need to bite to get a dose. it has an efficacy of 67%. Frontline needs 48 hours before and after application before bathing. Also ticks cannot build immunity to Advantix. They can, however, build immunity to Fipronil (frontline). A recent Flea Susceptibility Study conducted by Independent vets from around the world has been completed and the results have been published. if you would like to see this please PM me for details I hope this helps.
  24. Can I ask why you can't use advantix? Tick collars Kiltix is at 92% efficacy (efficiency) and preventic at 62%. Frontline Plus at just 62% efficacy. Remember with Tick Collars they take 24-48 hours to disemminate the active ingredients all over the dog and that each time your dog swims or has a bath to remove the collar prior and then it takes a full 24-48 hours again to redistribute the active ingredients again. You can use Kitlix collars WITH advantix for additional coverage and protection Kiltix colalrs have 92% efficacy and 50% repellency effects. they are effective for 6 weeks for paralysis ticks and 5 months for all other ticks.
  25. Comfortis Has ABSOLUTELY NO ACTIVE INGREDIENT THAT KILLS OR REPELS TICKS in any way whatsoever. The active ingredient of Spinosad is totally NON effective for ticks. No studies are underway to ascertain any different claims. IT is widely known that spinsosads are totally useless in killing or repelling ticks. COMFORTIS IS NOT TO USED for protection of Paralysis ticks. Comfortis ONLY treat ADULT fleas which are only 5% of the flea population. It cannot assist with reducing flea populations and its efficacy (efficiency) is only 14 % at 16 days after dosing. Also has many side effects: 1 in 5 dose suffer seizures, 1 in 5 dogs vomit on administration and it is not to be used on breeding MALES or FEMALES, or pregnant and lactating bitches also not suited for puppies under 17 weeks of age. there are NO ORAL treatments registered for use against paralysis ticks in Australia and the reason Proban is now discontinued is because it contained Organophosphates which have been unregulated in Australia for some years now. The registration for proban has now lapsed and will not be renewed, This season is shaping to be the absolute WORST season for paralysis ticks ever known. In QLD alone in the past 3 months (winter) have had 600 Paralysis tick reports from Treating vets of which 14 Dogs and 18 Cats sadly passed away. Dogs are being treated for Paralysis tick bites in Areas PREVIOUSLY NEVER known for tick pressure. Protection is cheaper than a vet treatment. The most important thing to remember is Compliance ie. Apply FORTNIGHTLY and CHECK DAILY no treatment is 100% effective against Paralysis ticks. And Australia's version of ticks are THe most deadly in the world.
