  1. oooh! Good reminder! We have been so snowed under I had forgotten about it. Guess who now has a project in between juggling babies? :p
  2. If we kept every image we photographed we would need an entire room to fit a hard drive. It is a bit hard to keep every shot on hard drive when you shoot in the capacity that we do. (We do keep EVERY image - but not on hard drive. As soon as we have photographed a job ALL images are burnt to two discs in their original form. All poor quality images are culled from the file that is kept on the hard drives. ) ??? A 750GB hard drive holds the equivalent of 156 DVDs. I'd rather store 1 hard drive than 156 DVDs. And if something happens to the hard drive we lose an entire client file. Our system - burn two copies of ALL files in original form to DVD/CD - (stored in two different places in case of fire, theft, etc ) Images are also stored on hard drive, but as we edit, we cull the images that we don't need. When editing is complete, another file is burnt (again - incase of fire, theft, etc.) Back in 2004 my computer was stolen - with it went five weddings that were in various stages of editing. Try explaining that one to happy brides/commercial clients. (luckily I had only JUST gone digital and most of the work on film and having it scanned back then... it merely set me back hundreds of hours. - brides still weren't happy.) As much as people are saying "buy more external storage", the humble dvd/cd can be a great asset when it comes to storage.
  3. KJA - you have a spelling mistake on your website
  4. The APPA's are coming up in a couple of weeks Who is going to go along and have a look at some new toys? I can't wait to go and look at all the stuff that I can drool over and add to my wish list. Alex has entered some prints into the AIPP awards so I will also be going to watch the judging and shmooz. Unfortunately due to baby commitments I'm not entering any prints this year as I didn't get a chance to get anything prepared that I thought was worthy. Oh well... planning on having a great time anyway. So who is heading in there???

  6. ridiculous amount of storage here... but still CULL! Pick the correct exposure and get rid of the others
  7. It happens in three You don't have anything else that is a Canon do you? (hope they get fixed very soon)
  8. Also, have no idea if this has been suggested yet or not... Is this an external flash or the on camera flash? If it is an external flash, you could also try getting a pencil eraser and cleaning the hotshoe. The same thing as what you are getting above has happened to me while shooting a wedding on the 10D and it turned out that a dirty hotshoe was the problem. Other than that... what a pain! Hope you get it worked out soon.
  9. Ruthless - go to canon directly, don't use a repair agent. (that is, if you haven't gone direct already). Our lens was in for repair and only took 5 days. 3 weeks is a very long time just for a quote.
  10. There is actually a flash exposure metre on the camera... you may have accidentally hit it and boosted the flash exposure by accident. look at the top of your camera, there are four buttons just above the screen; one looks like a light bulb, the next says AF.WB, the next is DRIVE-ISO and the one on the end after that is the flash exposure control. Hit that last button and set your flash exposure into the centre (my guess is that it might be up around the +2 mark at the moment.) Try this
  11. Actually, CR Kennedy is the repairer as they are an agent for Pentax. Pentax doesn't have a direct office in Australia. The staff there are brilliant but it is amazing how many times they get abused because they 'don't do enough' Let CR Kennedy know that you are happy with their service, it really does mean a lot to them. (from someone who used to work for them many moons ago and copped a lot of abuse from customers regarding repairs .)
  12. Might have more to do with the quality of their work than their full time status. Perhaps they didn't choose the best photos for their folio evaluation and that may have let them down. (I have no idea of course, just random thoughts after not getting much sleep.)
  13. Yep. Full membership needs to have a portfolio approved by two full members. You don't need arty work for this, just work that is techincally correct (composition, exposure etc) Affiliate/associate membership doesn't need a folio approved - and you still get access to the useful stuff like contracts, etc. ETA: Also the 'according to them' bit - you have to be working in the industry for two years full time as one part of acceptance, the other part is having a folio of a certain standard. Wouldn't be a very good professional association if they just let in anyone with a camera.
  14. My vet loves home remedies. Polaramine is fine, the lower dosage one, a whole tablet. Have had a couple of dogs come up with lumps and bumps from time to time. Last week Ronin had a run in with some tree sap that he reacted to. polarimine, a wash in malaseb and a few hours and he was fine.
  15. Tess, why don't you look at joining the aipp as an associate member? Once you have the membership the website has heaps of info that will help you with building your business such as contracts, etc. Also the info nights they put on are brilliant (even if you do have to listen to a fair bit of mutual back slapping amongst all the useful stuff). Just a thought...
  16. That looks like a sensor fault to me. Do you have another memory card that you can put in and try though? Also, I would be taking it direct to Nikon rather than a repair agent. Having worked for a camera wholesaler, it is ALWAYS cheaper to go direct to the source. At the very least contact Nikon and ask them if they repair or who their recommended agent is. Hang on, I just did a quick check for you, follow the link to find your Nikon approved service agent http://www.nikon.com.au/servicecentres.php
  17. He lives in the middle of nowhere and has a nice set up on his property. I'll let him know he has an admirer
  18. Steve (the editorial photographer) is a friend of ours. He fills in for us when we are too busy. Great guy and very talented
  19. Just found this thead, I should come in here more often. First - We only shoot in large format jpeg - We went with RAW for a while but found it more time consuming. If you have your exposures right to begin with, then there is no reason to shoot on RAW. as for the purist debate - photos worked on in the dark room are no different to photos edited in photoshop. I have seen many weird and wonderful compositions created in a dark room that most people wouldn't be able to copy with Photoshop. If you look up the categories for APPA competition (Aust Pro photography awards), it will tell you just how much or how little work is acceptable - whether in the dark room or on the computer. They DO have a photographic art category also for those images that just don't fit into traditional criteria. You want to see some heavy handed editing? Follow this link to have a look at the work of last year's winners - there is some stunning stuff there: http://www.aipp.com.au/aipphome.php?ID=240...nsors&A=?A= There is more that I can add but I am too annoyed at the moment. I am a lover of film and much prefer it to digital but when shooting over 1000 images a week, the digital wins on ease of output and cost. I find it really offensive that there are people who consider PS cheating or 'unpure', when in reality, if you knew what you were doing in a dark room, you could reproduce many of the same effects. Maybe I will come back later and add more when I have had more sleep.
  20. I think I already answered this in an old thread you posted PJ. The answer is yes. If they are both AF lenses and have the same mount then YES they will work.
  21. Make it a treat and associate it with something good. My Ronin used to draw blood trying to scramble out of baths. He has climbed out of over the top of a hydrobath trailer in the past. I started bathing him in the bathtub inside the house, using warm water and one of the plastic hoses you buy from a hardware for about $5. I made sure I only bathed him before we were going somewhere (dog show, dog park) doesn't matter where you go, as long as it is something they love doing. I talked to him the whole time and made it more of a relaxing massage than a rapid wash. When the bath is finished, I let him shake (what's a little water on the walls, you can wipe them down.) and I made drying him fun also, he loves nothing more than rubbing his head into the towel. Now I have to be careful to keep the doors shut or he walks into the bathroom and sits and waits to hop in the bath. ;) A little bit of persistence and patience is good. No matter how frustrating they are, don't lose your cool because they will just end up hating the bath even more.
  22. Polarisers are great. Just remember that if you venture into using manual settings, a polariser will cause you to lose 1-2 stops and also causes a drop in the sharpness.
  23. The trees are VERY large and some of the fruit is still green. We do eat/juice the oranges so don't want to waste them. I think I might go with MrsD's idea and call my friend about borrowing her fence. If I am lucky I might zap a possum or two also. I wonder if they learn as quick as the dog will.
  24. I'm not a fan of the bats either... but I can't get rid of the tree as I live in a rental. Although, it wouldn't make a huge difference even if I did because my neighbours tree is right up against the fence very close to mine. grrr
