How To Get Puppy To Go For Walks
lovemesideways replied to mackenzie11's topic in General Dog Discussion
In this situation, I would be tempted to ignore the bad behaviour and reward the good. Find an area that is a little busy, a few cars every now and again. Maybe a person or two. Something like outside a local shopping centre at a odd hour. The point of finding this is that you start working at a level that is not horrific for the dog. (Just like when you start learning how to drive a car. We always start on the back streets, then when the confidence is up, you move onto the busier roads and highways.) I'm thinking it probably a lack of confidence, but also there could be the added factor that shes got a bit of a history of success with this "don't move" thing she pulls. Stop moving = Attention and success. Success with her goal of not going anywhere, and loads of attention for doing it. So find your area, could be corner of your road. Make sure she is on a collar that cannot slip over her head (Like a Training collar/Martingale). Lead on, get your treats ready, every step she takes, praise and reward her with some tasty treats Whilst still moving. Even if you are just standing and she is wandering around your feet sniffing. Reward every confident movement to sniff. Then say for example, a car goes nearby, she digs her little heels in. Well how much does she really weigh? I would stop paying her any attention at this point and keep walking. Keeping a gentle tension on the lead to get her moving. So you aren't yanking her by her neck, just tension and constant movement untill that second where she starts walking on her own. At that moment, WOohOoo praise and treat and ALL tension out of the leash again. Treats and lots of rewards, back to every single step she makes forward on the lead equaling fun awesome rewards. This is just an idea of mine that could either help or do nothing at all, the best option always is to get a trainer in. 1 small session with a decent trainer to work out anything you are having a problem with. -
Hopefully the circus goers learned a valuable lesson that these docile kitties they are applauding for can kill you with one bite.

Cesar Milan Discussion

In response to the issues people have with flooding, there are cases where it Can be acceptable, (I believe) and very effective. Here is a video showing flooding being used on a highly aggressive Rottie that had been in a shelter for something like 8 years. Never before had a man touched the dog. They quite literally saved this dogs life. (there is also a part 1 explaining different training used)And here is a video of counter conditioning being used on a dog (by a awesome PP clicker trainer) that has a fear of the floor in the kitchen. It all comes down to the trainer. A great trainer will decide which method is correct for the dog, and use it accordingly. Problem is Cesar is not a trainer but people still try to emulate him. They don't realise he works with dogs that most of the time are on their last legs. Dogs that have actually killed other dogs and animals, will try to rip a persons throat out if given the opportunity. Last chance or off the to the rainbow bridge. I know people say "Look how much he has been bitten!" Considering the size and strength of some of the dogs he works with though, I'm thinking if he had been full on bitten there would be surgery and a lot of recovery timed required. Either way, no way in hell could I do what he does. I just hope I'll be able to get to the point where I can have a Great Dane barking and lunging at me, and stand there completely calm with nothing but a teeny tiny fence between us. He has serious balls for sure. -

I love him, and at the same time want to punch him in the face  I love how incredibly calm he is and the mentality of a dog is a dog. I treat my dogs like furry people in the way I'll talk to them (and then reply back for them..:D), cuddle, obsess over, let sleep on my bed, take them to doggy birthday parties . At the same time though, I know they're dogs, they need rules same as kids do. I teach them manners and expect them to listen to me. But his over use of the "dominant" thing is just ridiculous. I remember a episode with your average out of control Dally puppy. Cesars whole "he is being dooommminant, that is why he does it, bla bla" I just couldn't help but roll my eyes at. Its a puppy, with no training, being a puppy. Also having seen a woman chasing her small white staffy mix around a park trying to "bite it" with her hand, and doing the TSST TSSSSST thing, I can imagine if this woman was doing it, I wonder what other people are doing in their homes. Though, as the seasons have gone on, he's certainly moved away from the typical Leash correction, alpha roll stuff. Though I wonder if its just edited out to make critics happier? Plus no matter how much someone hates him, he is certainly saving dogs that would have otherwise been rehomed or put down. -
Ever Snuck The Dog Into A Motel?
lovemesideways replied to Lady Flying Furball's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yep 1 black stafford x seems to be lot of hair too - must be the bit that isn't stafford eh :D I think you need to be respectful of the people who own the places you stay in, I used to have a friend cleaned hotel rooms apparently people used to leave used condoms in the bed, defecate in the shower, and other such nasties, I always try to leave somewhere how I have found it. I even pull the beds to so at least things look tidy (even though I know they will be changed). I guess it really depends on the way you have been brought up. Makes me think of public toilets when you find things like blood on the seats and used pads lying around. pee everywhere. What on earth must their homes look like. I would be absolutely mortified if I ever did something like that. -

Weird Behaviour From 5 M/o Puppy
lovemesideways replied to Seita's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
The other stuff is all good, but I wouldn't be sitting and patting my dog whilst he's eating. Simply because it would be really annoying and you might aggravate even a excellent dog into wanting to tell you to piss off. I don't think its really reinforcing anything except mum is super annoying when we have a bone, lets move away from her. I do everything you've mentioned, plus making them work for the bone with some quick heeling or stay exercises, but unless I need to take it off them. I figure, let them be. I certainly wouldn't want someone coming and constantly touching me while I'm eating. Am I wrong in thinking there isn't a point to sitting and patting your dog while he eats a bone? -
A big happy birthday to the evil beagle !!! (And I think this thread definitely need more photos!!)

"Attitude"? Aussielover isn't a Trainer. She is raising the puppy for guide dogs. A incredibly selfless act that a lot of people couldn't handle (I certainly couldn't). Putting a year of her time, love and energy into Raising an amazing dog. That she will then give up and who will hopefully go onto becoming someones eyes and best friend one day. Maybe you should think before you type next time. And Aussielover, if you reckon it would be ok, you could bring Mindy around to my place for a bit of a play with my boys. Keep them on lead and they'll just lie there chewing on each other for ages.

If you don't like it. Stop it. Feel free to step in whenever you want! It's your dog, you do not need someones permission. -

He is doing well! I have a feeling it was the water bucket at St Ives Oval... We where there the day before, and 2 of my friends dog who where with me also got ill. Not as bad as Rover though. Rover inhales water though, none of the other dogs drink nearly as much. -
Water gun all the way. Or hose. Mindy will think its fabulous, and the cat will be appalled. Also maybe look into screens for your windows? Safer all around

This is Zero all over - awesome breeder, ended up in a bad situation, extremely dog aggressive, wouldn't let people near him, used to growl and snap at you if you handled his paws or touched his collar, took him to see k9pro, had a massive turn around and now he's an awesome dog again. I put a lot of that down to good breeding and early (very early) socialisation. It wasn't naturally in his nature to be like that if that makes sense. That being said, i think nurture plays a huge part - the wrong dog in the wrong home can be a massive problem. Also don't forget the amazing job you did with him, dedication and love make a huge difference in any dog

That almost confused me as it's 1am! :p She doesn't even own a dog or know things about dogs so for her to base her opinion on meeting a few pet shop/puppy farm dogs that "seem fine" doesn't mean they all are *sigh* Oh I completely agree with you. I can't stand people like that! To make it worse, she's probably sitting at home going "She thinks she knows everything, I've met the dogs and they're fine rararara bitch bitch whinge!!" 100% sure shes correct. Its just no fun at all when people have their head so far up there, that they can't see or hear anything but their own shit. -

Don't argue, it won't work. Think of it this way, imagine this girl is wearing a pair of green sunglasses (that she has no idea she's wearing), and you're standing in front of her wearing a white shirt. She says "Nice green shirt" you say, "Thanks, but its white" She says "hah, no, its obviously green" Nobody can win because you're both 100% sure you're correct. All you see is your point of view. (hopefully that isn't at all confusing...:p) -
Award For Biggest Idiot Goes Toooooooo.........
lovemesideways replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sadly I have heard this a few times. My puppy is 9 months, still entire, and going to stay that way for a while. I've already heard "when he gets to 2, he will become aggressive if you do not get him desexed". More than once. Good on you for stopping and chatting to him! Hopefully he learned something new. -
Out with Riddick and he was in a drop stay next to the table (we where at a cafe). A little girl came running out of nowhere, straight up to him and threw her arms around him. He didn't budge, just looked at me and wagged his tail :p This from a puppy who if a stranger looked at him or tried to touch him, he would run terrified to the end of his lead, hackles up and tail tucked between his legs.

Really Worried About Rover :( Healing Vibes Needed
lovemesideways replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
He is feeling a lot better today! Still tired, but very hungry so a good sign! (He was not happy about the low level of food he has been receiving ) Any recommendations? There is no point in starting it until you've finished the antibiotics. The abs do not discrimate between "bad" bacteria and "good " bacteria generally speaking. I have some PAW probiotics (you are welcome to have- they didn't do anything for my dog) but persoanlly i think those human-grade ones that are kept refrigerated are probably better, there are a couple of brands but i have used inner-health plus before with success. I hope Rover is feeling better today! I have heard this. But I've also heard to the contrary - that there IS a point to starting with pro-biotics even whilst on antibiotics. Its always hard to make a decision when you have half the opinions saying do it, half of them saying don't.. -

Did they actually give you the results for these tests? PCV is packed cell volume, checking for thing like anaemia, it can also be used as a guide for dehydration. cerenia is an anti-nausea injection, betamox is an antibiotic injection (the same as the tabs you have, but injectable). The health profile is a range of general health parameters that check such things as kidney function, liver function, glucose levels, pancreatic enzymes etc. I'm guessing that lipase was slightly elevated- that was the small positive for pancreatitis??? If they were really worried about pancreatitis, I would have thought they would have done a CPLI, which is more specific and diagnositic for canine pancreatitis. It actually sounds alot like what Mindy had (some kind of gastro/food poisoning thing), interstingly, I was told she stopped having tremors at the vet, but at home she started having them again. They vet said not to worry and to let her sleep it off, which i did, but also kept a very close eye on her. She was fine by the next morning though. I hope Rover feels better soon! Thanks for that! Good to know what it all means. They Didn't give me the results, but then I didn't ask for them (was too busy cuddling my boy). He has had gastro before, and upset stomach. Never this intense though.
