  1. yes yes please any help in creating awareness would be wonderful ill post tomorrow if my friend has had any success in finding the owner via microchip... i doubt that the vet will keep him there so please cross post this dog is lovely doesnt appear to have any issues
  2. oh dont worry...noones intending to score a free aussie shepherd but i dont think my friend had an option but to keep him overnight she has two little kids and she didnt want to leave them nor bundle them up in the car to take to the vet which is about half an hour away at least and what with the expected delay there ...at least thats what the cliinic told her so yeah...the pound is the obvious solution i just hope the owners think of ringing round the pounds lots of people dont even realise that the pound should be their first port of call fingers crossed for a happy reunion tomorrow
  3. oh thank u so much saxonpup is it actually illegal to keep a dog even if youre looking for the owner? something is in the back of my memory...is it not something akin to stealing to keep it on your premises> i know that the pound is the obvious option but both my friend and i would be horrified if our actions led this dog to being pts doesnt bear thinking ill just hope the owner can be found tomorrow really goes to show that collars and tags are a must couldve been home safely by now if that were the case
  4. \ ferals are a problem no doubt and something has to be done about them...no doubt but anyone who is taking photos of dead feral cat trophies >>>?? i dont understand how u can love dogs but not other animals you may not like them you might find them pests but to actually be grinning triumphantly over a catch....whether it was meant for the public eye or not...this is disturbing no animal chooses to be feral no animal chooses to do anything but what nature intended it to do: hunt and survive if youre going to kill an animal because it is a pest or a danger...then do so quickly and without the flourish surely the police dont take photos of each other holding up the carcass of a dog theyve had to shoot? what would the public think? surely they too take a pride in their job...but do they take joy in actually taking an animals life no matter the circumstances? maybe there are individuals who do...but if there was any photographic evidence then how would we all feel? what a shame i have heard this man speak at a dog event once he wont have my support now
  5. my girlfriend will take the dog that wandered into her home late this evening to the baulkham hills vet on old northern rd in the morning she was going to do it now but upon ringin them they said thered be an hour wait since they were very busy so she has decided to keep the dog overnight should this dog not be microchippied ...what are the best options ? what is the best pound/shelter around the western suburbs? we are worried that should the dog not be claimed he will be put to sleep in seven to fourteen days
  6. My friend lives in Glenwood...she rang just now with the news that a golden/merle type marking aussie shepherd wandered into her house late this evening no collar friendly overweight somewhat didnt appear hungry nor thirsty will be taken to the old northern rd baulkham hills vet in the morning to check for microchip and hopefully reunited with owner it is very late i know and chances are that noone can help before morning anyway but please pm me if you hear of anyone missing this beautiful dog my friend may be forced to take the dog to blacktown holding facility if theres no microchip...and we are both worried what will become of this animal if he isnt microchipped maybe aussie shepherd people could help out?as in....should the dog be impounded...could someone bail him out after the seven days expire? neither my friend nor i can look after this dog and we know that the pound is the right way to go...just hoping this can be avoided and the owner is located tomorrow thanks in advance for any leads or advice
  7. i dont like rough coats so i doubt id ever own one simply cause i LOVE the feeling of soft and silky fur spaniels figured largely in our family for a while but now as im ageing id consider size...i wouldnt go for a heavy breed..just the training would be difficult for me i think soft or smooth coats that are still silky to the touch are still important and im big on having as little doggy odour as possible probably have only one or two dogs in retirement so hmmm maybe a nice sooky velcro viszla ..hope ive spelled it correctly maybe a greyhound ....but only the right one or a whippet or iggie nice to have a sight hound cos they dont bark too much
  8. older dogs can be trained get an eyelet into the skirting boards around ur house or tie a leash round heavy furniture and provide baskets then take out regularly u can take her around on a leash ...never ever let her roam free the fewer accidents she starts having..the sooner she will get into good habits crating is an option too for when ur around or out for short periods ...upto four hours good luck shell be fine
  9. yes good advice but still doesnt excuse the incident poor lady what a terrible shock and not have any assistance would be so hurtful and upsetting it wouldve been bad enough had she just fallen over in a street and gone unnoticed by passers-by but to have to endure the humiliation of not being cared for by the perps....well it's just sad
  10. what a sad read so sorry it had to come to this but thank goodness we can make that choice if we have to getting through this bit is the tough part hopefully the sweet memories will start the healing soon
  11. i only started using a crate for my youngest dog...hes going to be turning four initially i had it for him during the night so that he could sleep on the landing outside our bedroom but then we got him an armchair and he was perfect on it when we moved to our new smaller home we had no room for an armchair outside our bedroom so he sleeps on the lounges...theyre leather so i dont think they smell doggy and luckily none of our breeds have that doggy smell but the other dogs are crated and i trained them in one night one yelled til past midnight but we didnt relent and they have all been great after a week they actually made a beeline for the crates they dont mind who they share with either i decided to crate train these older individuals cos we have only doors to the bedrooms and bathrooms/laundry here in this new place so we cant contain the dogs so when we visitors come over we can place the dogs in crates christmas was easy this year they all stayed happily in their crates throughout lunch theyre such creatures of habit...as soon as it is bedtime they just go in of their own accord cant believe how easy a transition it was
  12. id suggest sheltie too so loyal and as for allergies my OH is most allergic to our shorthaired breeds than he is to the longhaired ones we keep
  13. years ago cattle dogs were named as the most dumped dog i cant remember where i read this whenever i used to look at pound pics then it seemed that all the fluffies were right up there with the staffy mixes and huskymalamute breeds fluffies i guess can be unreliable with house training and i know of people who have given up their little dogs cos of that problem i guess the terriers can be wanderers...maybe some people just get sick of getting them back or theyre barkers or nippers some dont want to pay the bailing out fee sad stories abound poor choices will always be the undoing of our pooches
  14. really depends on your income and the breeds you choose i dont get any help from OH and we have been very lucky overall with medical costs all our lives with our dogs but we dont have working breeds i can manage the dogs on my own...the kids help with feeding etc now but for years it was my job if anything went wrong ...a major medical setback id have the support of OH's income...but otherwise i think it is doable if youre lucky youll get a super pup that just fits in and has no health or behavioral problems good luck with the dream
  15. i had a gsd as a younger woman and he was fine with people but he did injure a dog that got into our yard i am always wary of any dogs that are loose... if im walking with my dogs on lead i am always looking out for dogs that might be on their front lawn we have a couple of labs that go psycho when we go past their house and sometimes theyre let loose in our street...dont know what theyd do to my dogs if they had an encounter though seen too many dog attacks and it is far too distressing to dwell on
  16. funny reading all the responses we have a few dogs and really i have to say the toy stage is well passed little dogs mature pretty quickly and ours are mostly lap/toy breeds that do very little except hang round us that's one thing less to worry about- the expense of toys
  17. i like the shelties but i know they can chase birds very trainable though shedding not too bad for a long coated breed very loyal and affectionate companion dogs
  18. shame that you had that encounter but thats some people for you dont worry...step over it lol dont personalise...she may have had a bad experience or has some other issues wow that cutie puppy is a heartstealer...my first dog was a dachsie and they are so smart and loyal good luck with alwyn!
  19. gsds are loyal and devoted so maybe you should go for something like a sighthound that is a bit more aloof to avoid that jealousy issue ok i know that people here will say that dogs arent jealous...but whatever that behaviour is...where they get very antsy if another dog comes in for a pat... ive seen salukis play basically just run ragged...with dogs after them that might work but whatever you do...avoid another female and remember it may be a big failure so you might have two dogs that dont really play at all we have several dogs here not one of them plays with the others they get along but none play one of them plays with us the rest dont play at all lol all that company and they get along and sleep together and eat together but the playfulness left when they stopped being puppies try a grey i have seen one that plays at the dog park sometimes but usually she just hangs with the owner...
  20. i think id try a tibetan spaniel...not had one but i have met quite a few very happy owners seem like really good allrounders
  21. one of our all time favs...i never thought to think of any of the dogs as actual champs...funny that
  22. we have had a pretty good run generally as owners but it is nice they grow out of chewing we have lots of dogs at the moment but none have ever been diggers which is amazing as one of the breeds is known for digging... none of ours escape either...which can be a nightmare so we are blessed there too barking...one of ours is...but amid so many thats ok
  23. id like a kitchen that can be cordoned off we have an island bench unfortunately and an odd shaped area...nice but odd so difficult to set up barrier gates etc cos there are hardly any walls
  24. some dogs are fantastic and learn quickly others arent i had a german shepherd who was dry in less than 48hrs;;;he learned to wake me up with paws on bed to go outside but he was the odd one since then i have had the usual dogs...and the last one took 18months desexed ones can still mark so you have to be really vigilant but thats more common if therere more than one dog in the fam i have had single dogs who never marked inside and were undesexed if i were you id have him on a leash all day know his every move that way he will get to know the routine so have him tethered to heavy furniture or an eyelet in the skirting board next to his bed or actually hold his leash when you can and let him out every half hour then increase to an hour my latest boy used to puddle every 15minutes when he was tiny none of this standard hour business for him but now hes approaching four and hes a gentleman when it comes to toileting...squats like a girl...does it all regular as clockwork and will gently push on my bedroom door if we are sleeping in on the weekends it just takes time good luck
