  1. when i mind the sighthounds i give them their meals twice a day separately from each other and no exercise for half an hour before and as close to two hours after that i canmake it...exercising in winter is hard when you have to fit in disappearing daylight and food/toileting overnight issues sometimes ill feed them by hand...ie by fork...when i give chicken necks...it is one by one so no scoffing
  2. im really happy for you your story really struck a chord i have never been in your position- looking desperately for a place to live with your pets but this would be my worst nightmare...with all of our animals i guess id live in the car truly glad it turned out for you...!
  3. hmm that is a shame to read not surprising i suppose but still a disappointment after all we know now
  4. ahh zealots are scary in whatever domain they care to play and rule theyre everywhere ...so if you encounter something like this....step outside of it...sometimes these people fill their lives with their hobby and yes it is good to have a hobby but not lose perspective we are not saving the world here...we are not genuises and should stay humble once on a high horse it is easy to lose the sight of the ground upon which our feet should be planted it is easy to become arrogant and full of oneself with knowledge often plucked secondhand along and puff oneself up with irrelevant for the most experiences sorry you had to live the mongrel moment...have pity for those who dont have a lot of other stuff to get excited about passion is admirable but it can be a poison
  5. wow what a situation good on you for trying to rehome the dogs...good luck with it
  6. agree but i also think you need to respect other people's rights it's not all about being a dog lover and being good to your hound there are so many people who dont like animals and i dont get them but they do have to be respected and their rights protected as well
  7. our older bitch can be like this...she is 10 and the head of the dog household she will growl when she is eating and the boys respect her thats the key difference here i think we have all our dogs desexed and the younger ones are boys who fall in line with this top bitch in your situation you have an entire younger bitch who may well start to take umbrage at your swf telling her off and sometimes staffies can get really rough and unforgiving then of course your littley is at serious risk these situations can escalate so please be very careful dogs dont usually fight without a reason but the reasons can seem so trite from our point of view and sometimes we cant see the signals either be careful not to leave food or toys and watch the lounge situation as your indy grows older..your staffy could start to take her on more and more there is a behaviourist in the southern subs of sydney...if you look in the yellow pages youll find him...the girls there will give you preliminary advice many charge exorbitant fees just to speak on the phone with you but this guy's establishment seems pretty fair ...you can then choose to have a consultation or not definitely is a job for a behaviourist swf has no chance against a staffy..theyre the ones that often start the mischief but the staffy wont say no to finishing it id not be leaving the two of them together alone i dont know that desexing at this stage will do much cos even desexed bitches fight and i think i read here that entire bitches might be a bit more stable...hard to believe but i dont have any experience in that so i wont really comment i wish you all the best it is so scary to have this happening in your household and very disheartening but youre doing the right thing getting help early in the piece
  8. we had a gentle english cocker bitch for our kids she wasnt a knockaround dog...but followed everyone around happily we also had an american cocker and he was boofy and loveable goldies are good ..if theyre not too bouncy i love the sheltie temperament and of course the collie rough but the fur is an issue for outdoor romps a good terrier is a good choice but the problem is that you could end up with an overly exciteable dog that nips especially when young staffies are too strong for little kids
  9. we didnt have problems til the much older bitch started to decline then the younger one would have a go at her and so would the young male nothing serious ...no blood but lots of airbiting it was sad to see the beautiful matriarch being usurped like that i know some people have success with two bitches ( all our animals are desexed) but i also know of big big fights,,,and big vet bills and heartache depends on the breed and personality mix of course
  10. our dogs do have a routine but it isnt based so much on time but patterns what i mean by this is they get used to certain cues on weekdays ...i dont think theyre aware of the time but then again im not home to observe they seem fine with being fed as soon as we get home and they hold their bladders til then too one of ours...the youngest but dominant male ( all desexed) is a real routine person lol...he will do anything in his routine he trots obediently to his part of the house when he knows we are leaving for work and school but try to do that on a random weekend and he protests we never trained him to go to his room so to speak...he just gets off the morning couch position and trots into his room and plops down on his cushions he is stubborn wilful and aloof and was the most difficult to train but is the most clever of the dogs...wiley in his wisdom..a real street smart dog who can work things out the others are doughy and soft...lol i love and respect him the most ...even though he is the worst dog in the household by our pet standards
  11. i think poets corner accommodates the masses could be wrong but i think it sleeps ten? maybe you could get it cheaply but if theres only two of you then it is a waste theres plutos it is on the main road but secure fence wise
  12. it might work if the people had a dog that loved company but generally i think people would say no i guess theres enough to worry handing your pets and house to a relative stranger...mix in a dog...and theres a new pack of woes to take with you when you leave it is a bummer and i can imagine how you feel
  13. we have had both the gsd was great and he ignored our kids as he got older but the goldie was absolutely fool-proof...nothing phased him id go goldie...but they can be boisterous my choice for kids is a cav
  14. sounds normal but ask a vet i guess my non-cocker became a cocker in one afternoon walk started with a lightpole and away we went merrilyleaving calling cards everywhere lol
  15. sure they can learn and everyone here now cocks his leg though they have nothing to show off lol( oh except for one who is now three) our littlest started cocking at nine weeks all the others were squatting and desexed then one by one..they started to cock the youngest started to cock his leg only this year..did it so proudly lol...and now squirts on his fav bits of the walks every day he is the dominant one and his deputy, the three year old still squats...he will squat over the bitch's puddle and over any other dogs' spots too so he still marks in a way just not as high
  16. ok...it is not always the solution to get another dog as a companion sometimes you have a breed or a particular dogs that just craves human company and nothing else will do we have a fellow just like that here... we have lots of dogs but this boy fretted for us for quite a few months...he finally stopped but i dont think he did cos of the canine company cos there were already dogs here i think he just learned that we were coming back some time and that was it...he learned to wait and i know he doesnt howl now cos it is all quiet when we leave and quiet when we arrive...until we let himout the back when he really likes to tell us how much he missed us he would like to be an only dog...he has whispered this me on a number of occasions lol but his plight is such that he is a member of a big doggy tribe and thats the way it is going to be we once bought a cocker to keep our goldie amused ///he was digging holes right through china///( i think cos we bought him on anzac day and he thought he mustve been a digger lol) so we thought in our naiivety that the problem was solved when we introduced the lil cocker girl..but no...wed find them digging happily side by side...all the way to china...every afternoon...for many months so i guess the message is...if your dog appears to enjoy the company of others then go for it..get the right dog though, hey
  17. small dogs tend to be noisy so i guess if i lived in a townhouse id get an iggy sighthounds dont make good watchdogs in general...i guess theyre independent nature kinda speaks to the world : take the jewels take the cash Mr Burglar but just dont take the sofa! i have seen de-barked iggies so there must be the odd one who is a barker and their barking can be shrill but usually it is because theyre being picked on or theyre cold and want to come in so go a sighthound...a small whippet or an italian
  18. i dont have any experience with any of these breeds ...but i do love samoyeds..always have..and the more i talk with people and read the more i think theyre great all rounders...if you can deal with the fur...which i wouldnt lol as far as bugging breeeders..id ring round...not take up too much time..some breeders are happy to chat others arent so id not be incessant lol id go to a show and just mix and talk///ask if theyre not busy cos sometimes theyre about to go show the dog and youre in their way and of course there can be tension i d also not get too chummy with any breeder..some might feel that they have invested all this time tellingyou stuff about their breed and you go elsewhere to get a pup...and do be aware that there are cliques too hang loose...read lots ...observe...talk to dog owners at the park and of course get that DOL meet going...if youre aware that people can be biased about their breed then youll be right lol
  19. good on you hard to fathom that you need to teach grey all these things, hey not when most of us have dogs that have lived the life that most greys never get a glimpse of maybe we are imposing too much of ourselves on the greys needs...maybe theyre just fine living in the kennels not knowing the human bond we all expect to grow between dog and Man.. i dont know how i really feel about all of that bit what i do hate is the needless killing of thousands of these beautiful hounds and the greed of the industry... i so hope this stripey girl finds the perfect home... thanks for giving her that chance
  20. ok..just got back to this thread so sorry for the delay Moselle this girl i met at the beach one day last summer got talking and as i said let slip not knowing how i felt about the whole racing industry ... and she said that her dad always let their dogs get live bait...rabbits...i assume she said that it made them better racers if the reward was live bait..she expressed some regret...at least in her facial expression...but i guess when you grow up in the industry, you get hardened understandably and she was only in her twenties so plenty of time to ruminate as she grows older hopefully and distanced from those experiences of her family
  21. gosh what a time youre having with this so amazingly stupid that there are not more rentals for dog owners..it is crazy we are a nation of dog owners...it is not so in europe or the states we are so backward and unaccommodating and our pets suffer so...how many must be put to sleep out of the frustrations of the owner of not being able to sort out a temporary situation i dont know how id fare if i had to find temp accommodation for any of ours oh i do so hope that something comes of it...really do...and soon! good luck...ive been thinking of you
  22. it is so hurtful to us parents when things we teach our kids seems unheard or disregarded and its very hurtful if there is another person controlling them but you have to let it go concentrate on the relationship with your daughter and ignore the b/f it may all fizzle out anyway and you want that connection with your daughter to stay intact he may be controlling and he may be sticking it up you but just act like youre pleased that he got the pups as a surprise they may well turn out to be a joy for them anyway and theres no use you getting sour over it...hard i know...and id feel the same...but id try to mask it for the sake of my kids good luck..it's not easy being good
  23. it has probably been posted lots of times but after hearing what happens to a dog eating bbqued onions i thought id just let others know be careful onions can be lethal i rarely use onions anyway cos we arent so into them but i was very conscious of the fact that tonights chicken casserole had them...was extra watchful that all family members hadnt left any onion scraps that might drop to the floor onions can kill and if the dog survives theres usually a huge expense at the vets so please be careful oh...grapes chocolate and raisins too....ham at christmas time has been known to take a few victims all this is well-known to experienced dog owners but to all the newbies ...please pass on the warning
  24. cute stuff indeed just watch it though cats are great with dogs and if you have a cat that can stand its ground and be confident then youll be ok with a dog that is relaxed but things can change..if your cat skits across the yard your dog can still get excited and give chase and if the dog is scratched by an alarmed cat then it is tit for tat and the cat loses we have two ragdolls..chilled boys and they know not to run..they wait til the dogs are occupied then slink around theyre mostly indoors but do venture into the garden but if theyre eager to get food.,...two of our dogs will give chase for the fun of it could be nasty but the cats just lie down and give up...get their heads swallowed but no blood is drawn if the cats are just lying around then the dogs dont bother them at all
  25. hmm that is awful but i guess it is the way of that game i was talking to a greyhound owner...actually the daughter of one so she probably wasnt supposed to say anything about it she just said that the hounds they kept were blooded...using live lures when possible because she reckoned nothing worked in training better than the real thing it is funny what people say when they dont know what your real take on it is...it is awful too not saying anything...but thats the way some situations pan out...it is safer sometimes not to let on
