Is cartrophen actually an anti-inflam? I know carprofen is, but I thought cartrophen worked differently by helping to lubricate the joints. Just wondering if it has benefits I didn't know about! Also agree re second opinion with someone knowledgeable in the area.

I don't use spot ons now but when I used to get frontline there was always a small amount that you couldn't squeeze out of the tube. So if the ingredients didn't mix, there could have been the active ingredient left in the bottom of the tube thereby affecting the dosage given. Unless frontline is made differently, I don't know, but surely there would be some mixing of ingredients.

If all four dogs are on the bed, then about 50kg all up. Which is roughly equivalent to one dog for some of the previous posters.

This study sounds very interesting. Have you posted some threads on it that I have missed? Not since I started it a couple of years ago, I think. I'm not entirely comfortable talking about it here. It's like dog parks. Too many crazies. ;) Kidding. Mostly. Look at the language in this thread. Suddenly people are defending themselves against charges of cruelty that were never made. Sometimes I think people are so scared to look the truth right in the eyes and accept it that they build these outrageous straw man arguments to rail against instead. Good work! Must feel good to have established that you're not being cruel to your animals. Even though no one said you in particular were... And even though all anyone on the web can do is take your word for it or not anyway... Why can't we have the courage to think about this really critically and honestly? Welfare is a continuum, not black and white states. Providing imperfect welfare is not a disaster... unless you refuse to admit it and therefore never have any motivation to attempt to improve it. Sometimes we have to make compromises, and that's not the same as being cruel or irresponsible. It's just being realistic. Interesting, I wasn't aware of the differing attitude in some Scandinavian countries. I don't remember seeing the results of your research posted previously, but if you do decide to discuss your findings here, I'd be very interested to read about it. :)

What a tragedy. In my area a lot of people walk their dogs off lead near roads. When I've queried people about this the common responses have been 'my dog never goes on the road' and 'my dog is too well trained'. I think some of them honestly believe (or want to believe) what they are saying and so ignore the risks, and some others just don't care enough to do anything about it.

My SV is the same, I am hoping to try her on Clomicalm (sp?) this storm season to see if it helps her with her storm phobia and general anxiety. She doesn't have a run yet (I am looking into getting one) so she has to be crated during the day when I'm at work especially if there is a chance of a storm otherwise she takes off and she has done a lot of damage to fences and herself getting out. I'm currently working only 4 days a week and she has the run of the yard when I'm at home at night (unless it storms in which case it's back in the crate for the duration of the storm as she will still try to escape even with me there) so yeah not ideal but you do the best you can to keep your dog safe and comfortable. She seems to cope well enough with it she has a good run when she's let out and the rest of the time she mostly just chills out on the couch and takes herself outside when she feels like it. I also have a dog with a storm phobia and if there is any sign of storm etc then the dogs are locked inside when I go out. Just too risky to let Kayla outside if a storm hits.

What Dna Testing Can Avoid In Our Dogs.
kayla1 replied to dancinbcs's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's great that a DNA test has been developed to test dogs for this condition. What an awful, awful disease. -
Two of my dogs will do this too for cuddles, they'll lean against me then slowly slide down and end up on their backs on the floor.

Warning - Crackle Heads Cuz Toys Can Be A Choke Hazard
kayla1 replied to Tilly's topic in General Dog Discussion
I bought a couple of the crackle head balls but they lasted all of 5 minutes before the plastic insert was squashed, and I haven't given them to the dogs since. -
My older boy with spinal problems responded to treatment initially then relapsed, a lot of ups and downs. Hope you can find out what it is.
-
Does the specialist that examined him specialise in spinal issues? Some vets are better than others in diagnosing spinal problems.
-
Poor boy. I agree with others re spinal xrays as it could be back pain.
-
Not sure about internal medicine specialists, but I have found Richard Woolley (vet cardiologist) and Ray Ferguson (vet chiro) to be very good.
-
Not sure if these are similar? link

That's a long time. The vets I spoke to did say the cause is often not identified. Good that you found out what it was though.

When They Love You So Much It Hurts....
kayla1 replied to MadWoofter's topic in General Dog Discussion
Wow, my injuries are quite mild compared to that! I've been headbutted several times when bending down, my nose was the worst hit and it's never been the same since. I had a decent scratch right near my eye, which was a close call, and a few instances of being tripped up (but no major damage done!). -
It's Official, My Whippets Are The Best In The World!
kayla1 replied to Kirislin's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yeah I'm pretty proud of how creative I was. I never thought I'd be able to trust mine, but I've just been watching and discouraging any excitement. I still have to watch them, I think Puck is a bit jealous of the chooks, he thinks they're getting food he should be eating but as long as they're supervised I think the chooks can enjoy a happy few hours foraging in the garden. They're out there right now and the whippets are all asleep in the house. That's great. I'd love some chooks too, but I wouldn't trust one of my dogs with them. The chooks I had many years ago were named after Doctor Who companions. So there was Romana, Nyssa, Tegan..... -
Feeding Raw And Grain-free Dry Food
kayla1 replied to Sail_Away's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I know some companies recalled their products earlier this year though... Ideally Australian made would be best... Black Hawk is the only one I'm aware of made here but I'm not sold on it. Earthborn Holistic wasn't involved in those recalls, if that's something you are considering. I haven't tried the grain free variety but my guys are doing really well on the Ocean Fusion. -

Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread
kayla1 replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Sorry yes that's what I meant, I just read the article and saw that Steve uses it, but I was wondering if it would be loud enough? I might start with something that's a bit louder. -

What sound do you use as the behavioural interrupter? Just wondering if the kiss sound is loud enough in noisy environments? -
Melbourne - Vets Who Prescribe Chinese Herbs?
kayla1 replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
There is also one on the Mornington Peninsula, depending on where the adopter is located. -
Bumping this old topic. Did you ever find out what caused this with Charlie? One of my dogs has just been diagnosed with uveitis. Because it's only in one eye, and it came on quite suddenly, the vet thinks the most likely cause is trauma. All I can think of is that she may have run into something in the yard. She has cortisone drops and cortisone tablets, and is responding well thank goodness.

There is no excuse for intracardial injection to euth... That dog screaming was just awful... Absolutely disgusting treatment of those poor animals.

I would suspect hormone problems, so get a vet check first. The most common reason dogs hump (other dogs/bitches/people/toys) is that they simply discovered that it is an enjoyable sensation. I agree that in this human society it is not really a desirable behaviour and should be interupted and substituted that another, more desirable behaviour (eg getting ear scratched, or sitting etc, etc.) The 11 year old may have some sort of hormone problem (eg a hormone producing tumour - so yes a vet check is warranted) but it may simply be that she discovered late in life that humpinb feels good. Cheers, Delta is a "bottom of the pack dog" with no desire to try and rise. Out of our 9 dogs, the only dog she is above is Charlie (who is pond scum LOL he doesn't even rank as a dog in our pack  ). She doesn't have a dominant bone in her body and was desexed at 6 months. Then one day she discovered bean bags  Now there are times when she cannot be left alone with a bean bag as she is so intense I am scared she will put a hole in it and I will be picking up little white balls for the next year!!! My youngest girl Annie does this too, not bean bags though, just one particular dog bed! She does it when she's excited.
