Pigs Ears - Are They Ok For Puppies?
Nushie replied to kenneh's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It took Jager awhile to get the hang of his Kong, he would lick at it, and then get bored. So we used to give him one when we were watching tv or having dinner, so that he could suss it out in his own time. If we gave it to him when we left he would ignore it as he wasnt sure what to do with it. So after a couple of nights giving him a Kong while we were around and he could take his time and not stress that we were going to leave he slowly got the hang of it and we went from coming home in the afternoon to an untouched Kong to an empty one. Now he doesnt care what we do, whether we are there with him, downstairs, or at work. He loves his Kong. Takes him about an hour to get it all out. Its cute really cause once he has gotten to the stage where there is a frozen bit left down the end. He picks the Kong up at the little end and drops it on the fat end to try and loosen the meat. He does it over and over again until it falls free. -
Pigs Ears - Are They Ok For Puppies?

Agree, I bought some pigs ears for Jager when i first got him and he would be fine for about the first half of one and then he would try and swallow it, then cough it up, swallow again, cough it up. So he hasnt had another one since. Just too risky in my opionion. Jager cried every time we left him for about the first 6 weeks. I am sure he didnt cry the entire time we left but he did spend ALOT of time crying. Spend some time with him in his pen and praise him for being calm. Then take a step away, go back and praise him for being calm. Continue until you can easily walk away a few step without him getting upset. Then proceed to take a step around a corner or something so that you are out of site for a second or two. Then praise him. Slowly build up the time that you are out of sight for. Jager gets a frozen kong whenever we go out or on a Saturday morning when i want to sleep in (he is up at 6.30 EVERY day). He knows that if we are putting shoes on and he doesnt have his walking harness on then we are leaving him. He goes and sits outside the kitchen and waits for his kong. He then trots off to eat it and ignores us as we leave. -
My mum has a dally that weights a ton (well compared to her) and she has used this method of awhile now. He sits and waits until she says 'okay' and then he puts his front paws up and she lifts his back end in. He just sorta walks forward on his front paws (like you used to do as a kid in those wheelbarrow races). I think eventually she will have to get a ramp for him, cause they are both getting some arthritis, so it wont be easy for either of them.

I am a really light sleeper so i dont really have any advice for you in regards to waking up. But i would suggest that you have a dressing gown, and slip on shoes next to the bed ready to go. When you wake up or hear her stir etc. Ditch the pee pads and take her outside, if she gets distracted easily, put her on a lead so that she cant wonder off. Keep it all busines. Take her out, stand there and dont talk to her or make a fuss of her until she goes, when she does give her plenty of praise and then straight back to bed. I would suggest not playing or anything as otherwise she will wake you up so that you will play with her. If you take her out and she doesnt go, stand for 5 minutes or so and then take her back inside and put her back to bed. Wait until she gets restless again, then take her back out again. Eventually she will get the point that she should go while she has the chance. Yes it is a pain in the bum, yes you have to get up in the middle of the night - i did it in the middle of winter and it was bloody freezing. But if you are persitent they will get it. Some take longer, some need a little more encouragement. Stick with it and it will get better. Good luck

Thanks for the replies. By our Saturday afternoon appointment he has done 2 prior and both were pretty much back to normal. Vet seemed to think it was just something that he had eaten that he shouldn't have but said to come back as soon as possible if it starts again. Other than that he said that i could start changing over to adult food and to start cutting back on the amount - his reasoning being that cause he has stopped growing he will start putting on weight. Guess i will just monitor his weight and adjust the amounts accordingly.

Mine arent really christmas photos, just that Jager seems to LOVE the pompoms on the christmas hats

I thought pooping 3 times a day was pretty normal for growing dog? How many times would be normal for a dog his size? Last time we weight him was about 3 weeks ago and he was 6.5kg. His not fat and i keep an eye on his weight as i don't want him to turn into a typical fat pug. Actually just checked the pack of Eukanuka they recommend 1 to 1 1/4 cups a day and Jager is getting a little under a cup PLUS his 2 small kongs. So I think I might reduce the amount down as well as introducing some adult food.
-
Heat and humidity can do that? Never knew It has been a lot hotter than normal here. Lucky i bought him a cooling mat. Will have to try it out this weekend and see how that goes. Might also start introducing some adult food. Thanks

Sorry for the not-so-nice topic. So being that i pick up his poo 3 times a day i get a good idea of what it is like. And over the past few months it has been what i would think is good for poo Formed, not hard or soft, easy to pick up and doesnt leave a mess. Over the past week it has been alot softer, still formed, not runny but significantly softer and easily turns to moosh when you pick it up. So this morning, it was the same but it had like a mucus on it as well. His diet hasnt changed at all and he is still as bright and bouncy as always. I have a vet appointment for him tomorrow afternoon. So i was just wondering if anyone knows what could be causing it? I was thinking that maybe its the puppy food? He is 9 months old and he seems to have stopped growing and i thought that maybe its got too much of the extra good stuff in it for him now? Should i start introducing some adult food? Is puppy food likely to cause that if the excess nutrients arent being processed? He gets just under 1/2 cup of Eukanuka twice a day and 2 small kongs stuffed with meat and some veg. He has been eating this every day for the past 3-4 months without problems (obviously the amount of Eukanuka has changed over that time) but otherwise its all the same. Thanks people Attached a photo of him aswell. Its a couple of weeks old but i dont have any newer photos on this computer.

Jager used to whine and cry whenever i came home (be it from work, or from 5 minutes down the shops). Our house set up is a little weird with the lounge room upstairs. So i would come home and get changed (out of work clothes) and would not go upstairs until he stopped all sounds and was quiet. At one stage i sat in my bedroom for 20 minutes after coming home. This only happened once, and from then on the time got shorter and shorter. When he was quiet, i would start going upstairs, if he made a sound i would turn around and go back a step or two until he was quiet again. Eventually he learnt that making noise makes me go away. It broke my heart doing it every afternoon, listening to him whine, cry and howl when i came home. So now i come home, I get changed and head up and he sits patiently at the top of the stairs for me.

My last dog (not Jager) hated the leash when we got him. He was about 10 weeks when we bought him home and we would do training around the house as we couldnt take him out until he was fully vacc'd. As soon as we put a leash on him he wouldn't move. Plant his bum on the ground and no amount of coaxing with treats or toys would him to move. So what we did was get a knee high stocking and tied it to the ring on his collar and then played with him as usual or sat and watched tv with him. Didnt try and train him at all. We would leave it on for however long we were with him for (never left it on unsupervised). Next time did the same thing. Eventually he got used to it. Then we would pick the end up and let it fall on his back or feet etc so he would get used to a little bit of pressure. Once use to that we put a longer bit of stocking on so that it would actually drag on the ground. Again once he was used to it, we would move the stocking around so that he got used to moving pressure. From there we would hold onto it while he moved around. Eventually worked up to the actual lead dragging on the ground and then picking the lead up for a few seconds and then holding it while he moved around. Once we allowed him to get used to the pressure gradually he didnt have any problems.

My aunt loves walking and goes for about 2 hours each day, but she only has small dogs. So she bought a pram from a second hand shop and pushes that around on her walk. When the pooches get tired after about 30 minutes they get popped into the pram and she continues on and they just sit and watch the world go by.
-
Depends on what you call a long walk. Do you mean would i prefer to do 4 x 30minute walks or 1 x 2 hour walk? At the moment, Jager gets 2 x 30 minute walks a day. He is still pretty young and he seems to get bored and tired pretty quickly. But on the weekends, we go out to the park or visit with some friends and he usually gets a good 2-3 hours of running around like a maniac. The 2 walks on week days fit in better with our day and it means that he gets a walk in the morning prior to being left along all day and then one at night to get out and stretch his legs.

Jager used to do this when that singing flower from the Bankwest ads was on. He loved it. He would come running into the room, sit infront of the tv and do his little head tilt. He did it a couple of times when i sang. I think that means that i am a bad singer??
-
We didnt use a cone when Jager was desexed. I would take it off and only put it on if he shows signs of wanting to get to them.
-
Treats never worked with Jager. He loves his food and once he knows you have some, he doesnt leave your side. Doesn't even notice that a ball has gone flying past his head
-
Agreed. I would not be leaving them together unsupervised (even without food). Too many things can go wrong. I would find a way to seperate them, either by putting the pup in a play pen or seperating two rooms using a baby gate. Keep them seperate at all times when you cant be there to keep an eye on them both. Good luck

How Do You Get Past The Heartache Of Not Having A Dog?
Nushie replied to Bluefairy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh BF - i do miss hearing about Zoey's adventures but you did the right thing and you know that she is happy and healthy at her new home. Is another indoor cat an option? Before we were able to get Jager i had to make do with Kira (devon rex - with fur) she is the closest i could get to a dog without actually getting a dog. She is our little shadow and has to be with us all the time, if she cant be on you or under your shirt, she has to sit as close to you as possible, either on the arm of the chair or on the desk watching you type at the computer. She is very affectionate and follows me to bed every night just until i go to sleep and then she heads back up to sit with my boyfriend. She even plays fetch. Devon Rex's are very dog-like in their behaviour. Just an idea.... -
Hi Giraffez Have you tried a Snuggle Puppy? I picked up my little one on Monday, and his settling in has been great with this little item :D The heartbeat on them is so realistic! If you do look at purchasing one, you can pick them up cheaper on ebay and or amazon at the moment because our exchange rate is very good :D If you do decide to get one do not order from Snuggle Me - I did and received nothing in over 6 weeks, tried ringing - number disconnected. Emailed three times - no response. Only a couple of days ago after sending out another email I finally got my money refunded - but again no correspondence. Best of luck Agreed. I got one for Jager as he used to cry when we left him alone during the day. Now he is 8 months old, he still snuggles up to it at night, although we dont put the heat pack in or turn the heartbeat on anymore. Also an unwashed shirt is a good option also. But in the end it is just getting them used to spending time alone.

Jager does this occasionally. Not entirely sure why. He used to do it alot when we played with him. He would start off fine and then eventually he would 'hump' the air when we went to throw the toy for him. I would growl or give him a firm No and now he does not do it with him but he still does it when my OH plays fetch with him. Mind you my OH thinks it hilarious which makes me made cause he is encouraging / not discouraging him. He also tried it on with my brothers dog last time we went and visited. He hasn't done it to any other dog but for some reason he has a thing for Hugo. Its a habit that i havent had to deal with with any of my other dogs over the years. Do you just give him a good NO and distract them? Is it a habit that can be broken? Will he grow out of it (he is 8months)? Is it something that is just in them and it never stops? Thanks

Over the years we have had 5 dogs. 3 with issues with storms. Surprisingly the 3 with issues are the ones that we got as older dogs and the 2 without we had since 8 weeks. Even with Robbie and Annie flipping out and going mad, racing around the backyard and doing anything to find a way out. Whisky would be curled up happy and dry in his kennel. If we were home we would bring them inside. Surprised that growing up with the other 2 dogs he didnt pick up on that behaviour. Steed is a little more sedate. He wont try and escape from the yard if there isnt someone home. But he would do his best to get under the house. If he is inside he has to be ON you. For a dally that is a pain in the butt. He has to literally sit on you and he will start panting really heavily hours before the storm even hits. Jager doesnt care either way. Doesnt seem to even notice them, a loud smack of thunder and he will jump (but usually those are the times that i do to) but then back to sleep. Havent ever tried the storm cd's, but i would have thought that it was more the vibrations in the air than the actual noise of storms that upset them. I only think this because all 3 dogs would start getting stressed hours before the storm actually hit. I know that they have better hearing than us, but would think that if they were getting upset from a storm so far away due to the noise then why do they not get upset by pots and pans or doors slamming etc? Just an idea... Also to add that I always found it interesting that Steed (afraid of storms) has no problems with fireworks and yet, Whisky (not afriad of storms) would get upset by fireworks.

Haha my boyfriend was worried that the empty sack would just hang there forever, he wouldn't listen to me when i said it would eventually disappear. He has only ever had female dogs. Jager's stitches came out on Saturday. Vet was happy with the way it has healed. He hasn't been interested in them at all, so no licking or biting which was great. We spent yesterday at a BBQ at a friends house and Jager loved all the attention, just went from one person to the next for cuddles and pats until he passed out on my lap. It was a big day for him, and he hasn't done anything today, just wants to cuddle up and snooze. Back to the normal routine now. Looking forward to it.

Totally normal to be waking up during the night for a toilet break. Being only 8 weeks old she wont be able to hold all night. Just make sure you keep it business like. She cries to go out, take her out, stand with her, when she goes praise her and then straight back to bed. No messing around. For the first 2 weeks when i got Jager, I was up twice a night and then it went down to once a night for the following couple of weeks. Dont forget to post piccies Good luck

I agree, we had a play pen set up in the lounge room so that when we couldnt supervise him he could still be with us and watch what we were doing so that he is still apart of the household. Go to Bunnings and buy two of their wire composte bins. They are essentially mesh panels and you get 4 panels for $25. Zip tie them all together and you have a make shift puppy pen. Much cheaper (and i think sturdier) than the puppy pens you buy in some pet stores. We took the pen apart since Jager is toilet trained and we still use the panels for different things around the house.

Another vote for the dyson here. I used to spend an hour vacuuming our living area after we got Jager. With the dyson it takes 10 minutes. Super easy to empty. I even managed to get my boyfriend to use it cause it was so great! And he hates vacuuming.
