  1. Brandy is 18 weeks old and she has always been a good sleeper at night. But lately as it has been getting colder she has been waking up more and crying a few times during the night. I originally thought that she needed to go out for a wee but she never seems all that interested. And now that she is waking me up all the time, I have noticed that its not her normal "let me out I need to pee" cry. Its more of a slow whimper. And if I ignore her for 5 mins eventually she goes back to sleep. Its usually around 2 and 4am every night. She sleeps in her canvas crate next to the bed at night, she has a hot water bottle that I fill up before bed, she wears Jager's old fleece weatherbeeta jacket (Velcro close at front and Velcro belly strap), and the crate has a towel in the base with a fleece blanket on top. She also has a panda bear from her breeder that I think she snuggles with. I assume 2am is probably about the time that the hot water bottle starts to cool down, also the house, as the heater gets turned off when we go to bed. Any ideas of what I can do? She has always been a good sleeper, and she goes to bed fine at night its just those wake ups. I thought about a heated mat but I don't like the idea of wires around a puppy. I looked at those snuggles safe heated pads, but I didn't know if they would get warm enough? I know they are supposed to provide 10 hours of warmth but she is used to having a hot water bottle, would a heated pad be warm enough if she is getting so cold?
  2. We used a pet loo for Jager for about 2 years. We only had a balcony so it meant that he had a "grass" area to use when we weren't home (we took him out a few times a day to toilet so this was only used when we weren't home). I found he was fine with it for #1s but didn't use it for #2s. I think cause he circles a lot more. So maybe if your pup does a lot of circling, the area might not be big enough to find a good spot to go. Also make sure that it is 100% stable and that the grass fits in the lip. If the grass slips or its not stable you will just deter them from using it. We didn't have any issues training Jager to it but he was paper trained when we got him so we just put the paper all over it and slightly around it to encourage him to use and then slowly reduce the paper. Also I found that the grass that comes with the loo is horrible. Jager preferred other fake grass. We just bought some from bunnings and cut them to size. They sell 1m x 1m pre cut squares for $20.
  3. Yep, we got 2 and both have since died. One needed some adjustments just to get it to work the first time. Then worked for a few weeks and died. The second last a little longer and also died. Same as you, red light flashing, no bell, no food. I pulled them apart and cleaned them and played with the mechanism's to see if that would work and nothing did. So they both got turfed.

    Fatty Dacchie

I get asked all the time what Jager is crossed with as he isn't fat and doesn't have issues breathing. The amount of pugs that I come across that are heavily overweight and make the most horrendous noise when they breathe breaks my heart. How can people do that to their pets? I put a lot of effort into keeping Jager fit, and I think it is so sad that people just assume all pugs are fat.
  5. that's what I thought too, but then I read that the young guy is not the owner, he's a professional stunt man. Yeah, that makes sense, I was wondering why Jumpy was always looking off camera for the cue's. Still amazing what he can do. Loved the synchronised back flip.
  6. Hi all, Brandy is only 12 weeks old this weekend so obviously I am not super concerned about this right now but just through I would get some ideas of how to get her into a drop / down position. With Jager I would get him into a sit and then move the treat from his nose to between his paws and he would drop down into a lay position. Brandy doesn't. As soon as the treat gets to her paws, her bum pops up. I have tried moving the treat in front of her feet, between her feet etc. And it seems that no matter what I do, where I move the treat to, her bum comes up. Any suggestions? Last night I managed to get her into a semi drop position (about midway between sit and drop) and was treating her for that. But then decided to stop in case that ended up confusing her. Should I continue with that and just ask for a little lower until she gets the drop? Or is there a better way? I have tried putting a little bit of pressure on her bum while luring her into a drop to try and keep the sit but that just seems to confuse her more.
  7. I love seeing the photos and videos in this tread. Makes me smile every time!
  8. That he stops indicates its not bullying. Sometimes, when Japser and Chloe get a bit TOO excited, I will simply say "play nice you two" and they pay attention to me and settle down for a bit. I only do it because they like nibbling on each other's ears, and like a doting parent I worry that one day they may actually scratch each other. It's very important that you're not constantly saying "Jager NO," or "Jager STOP." He will think that he is being punished (and he already feels "put out" by the interloper.) SOME older dogs do get very annoyed by new pups, and even gentle placid dogs have been known to harm (and even kill) young puppies. So you are right to be careful and watchful. However its my opinion that any such severe annoyance would manifest quickly, and that provided the rough-housing remains good-natured, you should not do too much to interfere. Thanks for all of this. It is very helpful and I agree, I have been trying not to constantly keep saying "Jager NO," or "Jager STOP" etc. They have been pretty good this weekend. And if it gets to loud and annoying I have just been calling them both to me. Brandy seems to have just learnt her name and will spin around to me when call her. They both get a treat for coming and sitting. And that seems to calm them down, even if they then go back to play, it seems more sedate. I think we are sorting it all out!
  9. Snugglesafe. That's the one that I was thinking of. Thanks!!
  10. By stairs I didn't mean a whole flight. It is just the 2 steps that separate the lounge/kitchen from the rest of the house. But thank you. I will indeed read up on that.
  11. I remember reading ages ago about some head pads/disks that you can buy that a good for puppies. I am currently using a hot water bottle for Brandy in her crate and she loves it and snuggles in at night. But when we have a pee break at 2am. It tends to have gone cold and the kettle takes forever to boil. So trying to keep a puppy inactive so that she will go straight to sleep and waiting for the kettle to boil can be really difficult. Does anyone remember what these pads are called?
  12. This really helped me with 2 & 3 of my issues. Cause I do think it is bullying and will continue with stopping the play and time-outs. But does anyone have any advice with number 1? Is he offering to play with her? When she catches him, he doesn't growl or anything, just runs in other direction and trying to get her to chase him? I just need to know if it is something that is playful and I should allow it or should I stop it and take the toy away? Mine do this same thing- i have never thought of it as bad. Just as a chasey game- Deniki loves to chase and Kokoda loves to run haha He will sometimes catch and tug for a bit before the rounds start again. So i think it's ok, that is- if it is how my boys play- but from reading it sounds like it is harmless. Thanks so much. I assumed it was harmless. It is a game that Jager plays with my other half, generally steals a sock that he is trying to put on and runs away with it and then comes back, just out of snatching reach and then bolts off again with the other half grabs for it. They both love it and end up doing laps around the lounge.

  14. So we picked up Brandy on Sunday morning. She is an adorable black bundle of pug cuteness and very smart. At only 8 weeks old she already knows how to go up the stairs (took Jager until 10-12weeks), to sit for treats (although we haven't associated the word with the action, she just knows that her butt has to be on the ground), and she is already going to be the back door when she needs to go out (we are still taking her out every hour but if she needs to go in between she will go and stand and wait at the door). Jager was a little unsure of her to begin with but has since relaxed and will play with her. But I have some questions about Jager's play style. At the moment when I think they are getting to rough / Jager is bullying, I enforce a bit of a time out. Can you please let me know if the below is normal and if it isn't, how do I teach them not to do it? 1 Jager often brings a chew toy to Brandy and stands about 2 steps away from her, then she chases him and tries to grab it out of his mouth. When she gets bored and stops he will go back to her and start to chew it in front of her and she will chase him again. At the moment I haven't really been stopping it but the toys he tends to use are those nylabone type chew toys (we have stacks as Jager loves them) and I worry that it might cause some guarding issues. If Jager takes them to his crate then I make sure that she stays away so that he can chew in peace. 2 Play normally starts out pretty slow, a bit of paw waving at each other and play biting etc. However after a while Jager does get a little stirred up and will being head butting her, or push her into a corner or into our legs. So she ends up laying on the ground, generally cornered and Jager still bugging her/head butting her. We are stopping this by calling Jager off but generally as soon as he stops/looks away/walks away, she launches herself at him biting his neck and wanting to play again. 3 When she runs around like crazy puppies do, Jager was chasing her down and would bowl her over. He gets this prey look in his eye and for the first 2 days he would be fixated on her and even if we called him off he wouldn't be able to draw his attention off her even though he would stop playing with her, he would just stare at her. We have been breaking this by moving him out of sight of her and waiting for him to calm down again. He seems to reset until she starts running again. This has reduced the past couple of days and he will chase after her and then stop without bowling her over, and when we call him to back off, he will break his gaze on her and return to us. So I assume this is a good improvement. As a side note, Jager will stop playing with her when she stops playing with him. So if they are playing and she gets distracted or starts chewing on a toy, he will stop and leave her alone. He also stops when we tell him to. They are never alone unattended. She is in her pen when we aren't home or not supervising. All food related toys etc are removed before she is allowed out of her pen. Jager gets his food in a Bob-a-lot and also gets stuffed kongs. These are put away in case they start arguments. When Jager has had enough he will just jump onto the lounge to get away from her. Jager generally plays really well with other dogs, but most of the dogs we know are larger than he is. I just want to make sure that we start off the best we can. Photos below.
  15. Perfect sense. And exactly what I needed to know. Thank you!
  16. Do I just copy and paste the entire BBC code into the "insert image" I tried and it didn't give me the error code any more but it still didn't post the photo. Puggies by nushiek8, on Flickr
  17. So I started Crate Games about a month ago. I really just wanted to use it as we are getting a new pup in 2 weeks and I want our current dog (Jager) to be comfortable in his crate so I could send him to "bed" and train the new pup without him wandering around/causing distractions or playing alone for treats. So far he is doing really well but I find that he takes himself to bed (when we aren't training) quite a lot, which is fine, but he then expects treats. On the DVD you train so that if the dog doesn't have a job when released he should take himself back to the crate and you treat him for doing so. Well that is what he is doing but obviously I am not going to treat him all the time. What do I do? The crate is in the lounge room and I like that he will happily take himself to bed when he wants to. But is it counter training if I am not treating him for doing it when we aren't "playing the game"?
  18. Sorry to highjack the thread but I having issues posting photos onto DOL. I have a flickr account and when I link the image I get error "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this board". What am I doing wrong? I have posted photos in the past.
  19. TOO CUTE!!! No puppy photos would ever be considered as spam! So it has been 5 years since I last commented in this thread, but at last I can do it again! We are getting a little pug girl in 2 weeks time. We finally get to visit her this Saturday and then pick her up the following Sunday. Cannot wait to bring her home. So much to do! Edit to add photo. Only a few weeks only here. The breeder has been sending videos as they don't sit still enough to take photos :)
  20. What I don't understand is why would they have turned people away that wanted to go and collect their dogs?? Surely, if the situation is bad enough that people were concerned and offering to pick up their dogs, why tell them not too? Was he too busy offsite to worry about the extra work of people collecting dogs in a rush? Was he concerned about people driving into fire zone? Did he not want to loose money during peak periods if people wanted refunds for a shorter stay? Was it all too much work for the 16year old that was supposedly left there alone? I understand that there is a lot going on in an emergency, and if people were on holidays and sending others out to collect dogs on their behalf, that would cause its own drama, keeping records of who picked up who etc. Especially if they weren't the original emergency contact. But why advise people not to when other facilities were already preparing to leave??
  21. Nope, Jager learnt at an early age that waking me up equals being locked down the other end of house. I would feed him breakfast, close the baby gate and go back to bed. Now he stays in bed until after I shower and dress each morning. Then he follows me down the hall for breaky.
  22. Jager is a licker. I hate it. The occasional one I am fine with but once he gets started he can go forever. I stopped it by saying "Ugh" or "No" in a grumbly voice, and turning away or moving away. That generally stopped him. Now he will give me one or two and then stop himself. My OH is different, he loves the slobbery kisses and will lay there and take them. Jager will happily lick his ear or face for 15mins before deciding he has had enough and doze off to sleep.
  23. I use Ziwipeak and I really like it. It is rather expensive and we had to switch to a cheaper brand when the OH lost his job but I still use the dry food as treats and Jager just loves it. I have been ordering it online but I just did a search and the website says that there is a store near me that stocks it. So might go in a have a look. You do feed a lot less - they go off their own scoops which are rather small, I think each scoop is about 50g. Jager was getting 1 scoop in the morning and 1/2 scoop at night (he was also getting chicken necks at night though). I haven't tried their can food or the treats through so no idea what they are like. Just looked at the websites for feeding amounts. Ziwipeak - 10kg dog - ~97g per day What I am currently feeding - 10kg dog - ~140g per day
