Vet Just Told Me What I Am Feeding Is All Wrong
KitKat replied to Veanna's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
KitKat, do you mind me asking what seminars you are talking about? Are they for vets or general public? The normal ones the vets go to are usually run by the dry food companies. As to the talks you coloured in that was actually from listening to a half hour talk in a public arena by one of the leading raw/barf recommending types...and yeah...the cancer bit was just one example of what he was going on about. I doubt it would be worth the while of such as him going to other vets and saying such...the vets and other professionals would just up and leave. He was not giving a balanced view at all and so lost alot of interest. -
Vet Just Told Me What I Am Feeding Is All Wrong
KitKat replied to Veanna's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Don't worry about it...there are more vets against raw feeding then there are ones for it. Mostly due to lack of education on nutritional requirements. I guess part of it is also that you do have to be careful with raw feeding and getting it right. Where as good/high quality dry food is all you need in a bag etc and so easy for them and easy for the pet owner. Also most nutritional info classes/seminars etc they have access to are from Hills/Euk etc so...biased towards dry food. And some of the talks/seminars for raw feeding are so anti dry food you kinda get left going 'wt?' and treating it like pushy crap info. Eg dry food causes cancer, because sugar is in dry food and sugar is what they grow cancer in in petri dishes etc. -
Doggie Dancing With Larger Dogs?
KitKat replied to KitKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Well...Bronx can do the weaves as i walk etc...as long as i take a somewhat exagurated (sp) step...lol. I might have to look into it, even if just as added 'play' time. -
The whole doggy dancing has me kinda interested...but...just wondering how easy it is with larger dogs? eg GSD size? I'm thinking Bronx would love to ham it up in such a way

Gsd & Using Treats In Training
KitKat replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It can depend on the GSD I have one (Bronx the easy one) that would turn himself inside out for treats...yet the other (my Brat) likes treats but would be more inclined to turn himself inside out for high praise from me It can just be a matter of finding out what turns them on :D -
You've probably already googled...but...it seems as if the problem exists...if this is actually the dogs problem well... http://www.bobmckee.com/Client%20Info/Neur...loneuritis.html http://coonhoundparalysis.blogspot.com/ http://www.terrier.com/breed/coon.php4 http://www.animalhospitals-usa.com/dogs/co...d_syndrome.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyneuropathy_in_dogs_and_cats Seems it can be caused by vaccinations and toxoplasmosis...

Southside Dog Obedience, Brisbane
KitKat replied to KitKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Woot - I'll be back there this Monday with my two mad boofers ML - is this the lil chatty BC we'll be meeting? I might be able to arrange for Sabe to be in "full baying of the hounds tanty" for the night - remote collar needs a battery so he'll be without it...will be interesting to see how he goes - mind you he didn't 'need' it last time... -
I haven't seen their treats for ages either I've not actually gotten to try them. Have used the VIP Chunkers as training treats before tho. I only really buy the fourlegs food when it's on a clearance special...usually pick it up for $2.50-$3.00, so i'll grab as many as i can afford and stick them in the deep freezer Dogs go nuts for them. Actually even my Birman likes them and will usually steal a couple before i get the packet to the dogs
-
Well...my dogs get fourlegs food as treats and as special dinners...the otehr day i got some of the new version that also has gravy - well...the dogs went absolutely nuts for it!!! Not great for treats as they are well covered in gravy and it pools at the bottom of the container...so both dogs ended up with snouts in it licking it clean at the end. And my OH nearly laughed himself silly watching me feed two 45kg GSD's individual foodie nuggets off of a plastic spoon - both sitting waiting eagerly for their turn to get a piece The food was so good that when the resident possum took off from the roof, into the palm tree and down the fence line she only worrented a look before the dogs looked back at me to make sure they didn't miss their turn to nab the food

Plain raw meat can be a dangerous diet for dogs...it was one of the problems that came up recently (within the last couple of hears) that was the cause of some dogs death and severe nutritional issues. One person who had a dog with the problem ONLY fed his dog the raw meat...no other kible, bones or vegies - he stated that was all he fed his dog...not a surprise that the dog was in ill health. However...raw meaty bones etc is a perfectly balanced diet if done right - same as with kibble. Some things will suit some dogs better then others tho...eg red meat over white meat, raw over dry etc
-
Roo meat is very lean - however if it's used as a part of a varied diet it's fine for pups/dogs. However it is a rich meat so introduce it gradually as it may go straight thru them if you aren't careful. Roo on the bone (roo tails) are a great way to go.

Not being able to feed her chicken makes it a lil harder...but are you sure that chicken is a problem for your dog? As to easing her onto raw...you can just do the switch over night...or you can switch over a few days and slowly ease out what dry you feed her. Suitable meat can include - minus chook of course - lamb necks, lamb flaps, lamb offcuts, turkey necks, turkey bums, turkey wings, turkey legs, beef off cuts, beef ribs, pig feet, pork hocks, pork ribs, rabbit, goat pieces, roo tail etc Vegies can be your usual run of the mill vegies...just steer clear of onions, green potato, grapes apparently, and tomato i think are the usual ones not to use.
-
How often do you feed her? and how do you feed her...as in access to food all day or set meal times?

I've been told that it's in the way of 'purely positive' training.. -
The dog is a senior GSD if that's of any help Cavandra. So kidneys have been checked? Teeth checked? other then that...i have no idea either - hopefully the specialist can come up with something for you!
-
Hills do a retail senstive skin product...so much cheaper then the Z/D I've had good results from people on the RC GSD - GSD's sometimes being the sensitive souls that they are
-
Did you find a difference with the Proplan against the EP? Just wondering if the Euk Lamb and Rice, Hills sensitive skin or RC GSD would make a difference even?
-
Were you using the proplan sensitive type?
-
Yeah...my cats wouldn't touch the big bag that i bought them...rotten sods...and i had already emptied the bag into a big container and gotten rid of the bag

Help With A Diet For A Mini Poodle
KitKat replied to Loraine's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hehehe...always happy with knowledgeable corrections Jed Always happy to keep learning for starters! Must admit i was also thinking later that minced chook (eg like leonards etc?) would be a better way to go - not to mention perhaps a pair of jammies making sure she doesn't get too hot or cold - eg cold makes her use energy for other then getting back into condition, not getting too hot and sending her down hill. Hadn't thought of the sardines being too rich...but i guess the ones in oil for starters would be too much and would just slip straight thru her system. Would raw fresh fish perhaps be an option? Just thinking that oils would be good for her skin, coat and putting on weight - eg like sprint oil is often used? I know that cat foods are made ultra stinky due to their sense of smell not being as good as say with dogs so the stinky food is more 'tempting' to the cat - could the same be said of older dogs? not feeding them cat food...but feeding stronger smelling food to tempt more? (Mind you the first time my dogs got fresh whole raw fish they weren't sure what to do with it!) -
Basically it's easy to barricade off any size crate...just stick cardboard box in one end of it...lol. Tho i got the 48" crates for my GSD pups and they never needed it smaller...they were very clean pups and wouldn't toilet in the crates at all. Basically for hte airline crates it's best to check the airline websites and see what their current requirements are and buy to those specifications. However the requirements can change over time - but you can rent crates from their airlines/transport companies if required. ETA - an no...it's never too late to crate train a pooch And if it has their bedding in it the dog will generally use it to sleep in of it's own accord (think it's their den) depending on the crates location.

Help With A Diet For A Mini Poodle
KitKat replied to Loraine's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If it's of any interest Royal Canin is doing a breed specific poodle food these days...puppy foods or energy foods are also good. Chicken and turkey are great...not to rich to upset her tummy. And you can easily get wings, necks, mince, frames etc for her to start on....sardines as well as eggs are probably a good bet as well.
