  1. When I came home from holidays last week I noticed a sore under Tilba's eye. I scratched at it not knowing at 1st what it was & the hair came off with the lump, scab. For the 1st 2 days I put maluka honey on it. When I went to re-do it each time there was another scab on it which came off with the next application. I didn't like this happening & remembered I had an iodine solution that was given to April many, many years ago for hot spots developed from a flea allergy. It used to be wonderful for the flea hot spots, they would clear up after a couple of applications. After a few years I asked if it would be still ok to use. The vet said it would last forever. As it is diluted at 10:1 I still have about 1/2 a bottle left. I bathed the wound area last night & this morning a new scab hadn't formed, hence nothing to come off & cause the hole to get bigger, which it was doing each time I applied the honey. Here's hoping it will clear up & the hair grows back. Don't want to spoil her good looks. I don't know what happened to cause the wound, maybe a bite from our other dog while playing. It used to be wonderful for the flea hot spots they would clear up after a couple of applications. Tilba also suffers from itching skin, with dandruff seeming to be the only culprit. I'll also try the calendula tea
  2. I guess we have no real control over club rules, however vacination requirements have changed according to our vets. After 12mnths no more until 3yrs. after five not necessary at all, there are two exceptions to this BC's and Rotties have to be done yearly, I have no idea why, I assume the C5 has kennel cough I have never had kennel cough vaccinations given to my dogs, and they have never had it. Beagie My border collie was given a 3 yr vaccine C7 at 14 m/o. The vet didn't say anything different about borders & I haven't read anything about a difference between bc's & rotties.
  3. That is so sad for such a young dog. RIP Duke. Run free over the bridge.
  4. I would also ignore anything you don't want to continue in the future. He'll soon realise that he won't always get his own way. Is Henry a lab? If so I would go easy on the exercise until he's fully grown. Exercising his brain is just as tiring as the exercising the body.
  5. I've done a little targeting with Tilba & she uses her nose & paw. All new exercises are mostly lured. Who has videos of their dogs doing their luring training? I'd like to go further but not sure how to go.
  6. Thanks for that! I'd forgotten about the umbrella I had never really thought about umbrellas either & we never had any rain for the 1st few months we'd had Tilba. Then I remember doing some exercises with umbrellas, party poppers etc at a dog club I used to go to. So, I thought, I'd do some of the same with Tilba only to find when I brought out the umbrella. She shyed away from it & still does. I have no idea what spooked her with them, I guess she's just a little nervy around things that doesn't often experience. Another point to remember is that if you don't do these things with your dog on a regular basis, even if you've done all this socialisation with him now, he can forget them.
  7. You have done a lot more socialisation than I did to new & different things & ppl. You don't mention him having met any dogs/puppies. If you want him to socialise with dogs I think finding some safe, unflapable dogs would be good. But don't forget that things can be extinguished if they are not seen/heard on a regular basis. You may even have until he's 16 weeks, I used to use that as my bench mark when I got Tilba because I didn't get her til 12 w/o so wasn't a lot of time. Even though she was used to seeing a range of dogs in the last 6 mths or so she taken a dislike to certain dogs that she knew from puppyhood. I have taken her to dog shows & she has been scared of dogs in crates barking at her & tent flaps, flapping suddenly next to her.
  8. I think it depends on the tool you are using and how you are using it. And regardless, there are still wrong ways to use a tool, and correcting a dog so hard that you (for example) lift their feet off the ground and cause them to cry out or yelp is wrong IMO. It certainly didn't work on April, she was trained on a check chain for the 1st 7 yrs of her life. Even b4 getting her I had read in a few dog trainig books of the time to give a good correction, hard enough to make the dog yelp & you'd only have to do it 2-3 times to stop the dog from pulling on lead or such. Not knowing at the time that a border collie was a soft dog & didn't require harsh corrections, it only made her lag, shut down, with those methods. Once I changed to positive training in 2000 she became a much more relaxed & willing partner. And yes I was shown & did use the corrections the right way.
  9. It should be well worth it, I saw Terry Ryan quite a few years ago when she did a seminar for APDT in Sydney.
  10. Thanks for that info. I used to belong to Werriwa dog club many years ago with April. At that time they didn't have a playgroup. Is it attached to Werriwa? I don't know if you know, but don't let your dog swim in or drink the water at C N lake. A dog died a few years ago after swimming there. I don't know if it's been cleaned up?
  11. I'm glad you got it sorted, but didn't you say the 1st pic she sent was a pup of a different colour?
  12. Yes they sleep a lot. I remember my boys asking when we've got new puppies, how come they sleep all the time?
  13. That's what I was thinking. Labs play pretty rough that I've seen. I would also like to know where the playgroup is & what obedience club you go to. Tilba doesn't get much socialisation with other dogs, only our other 9 y/o & that doesn't count.
  14. Congratulations, seems like you've succeeded. Don't give in when you've come so far.
  15. April my 1st bc & Tilba my present bc was/is vey pretty girls. April was a bit like I'll snap at you b4 you snap at me while Tilba wants to be everyones friend.
  16. I was tempted to email & say to them that a labradoodle is not a pure bred dog. But lets face it, if we go back centuries & even decades, all pure bred dogs were once mixed with something else to get to where they are today.
  17. I have fed NG for years. When April was about 10 she developed an alergy to wheat, I discovered. She would become incontinent. Even if someone gave her a biscuit or toast crusts etc. So for the last years of her life she lived on a 1/3 tin of NG, I didn't get the pasta one att, & mostly raw chicken pieces with the occasional lamb bone. She did well on this diet & it also helped her teeth. The last year I discovered Pro Plan salmon with oats & then Purina One salmon & oats & she was able to have that on occasion as well.
  18. Heard last night on the weather, Dr Chris Brown Bondi vet, that parvo is going around. Hope all your dogs get better soon.
  19. My dogs both previous & present have had the cartrophin injections & I didn't find they made much difference. April had 3 courses & so far Sooty has only had the one. I have also used Sashas Blend, unfortunately I bought it at the vets & it cost me about $20 more than at a pet warehouse. Minimal effect & I had to hold my breath to use it. I have also gotten glucosamine & condroiton tablets. For the 1st 4 weeks you give twice the dosage & then 1/2 for maintainance. Minimal effect. I have also given them fish oil capsules from the health store. With all of these things they need to be given continuously, except cartrophin, & you won't see a difference until about a month. Something else is to make sure he has a soft bed off the ground, like a trampoline bed. I've also heard that acupuncture & physio can help.
  20. I would pulverise the veggies (as per Dr Ian Billinghurst) as stated & add about a cup of the mince to each serve of veggie mix. Feed him this for one of his meals per day & the other meal his RMB.
  21. Nice site jazzy - and very cute harnesses. But I really like the martingale effect at the front of the Easy Walker which it sounds like the Jellybean ones have at the back instead. Very cute tho. Thanks for your comments! Yes they do have the martingale at the back and smaller loop at front. No problem, thanks for looking! Hope you find one soon.. Definitely get a front attatching harness. If they hook up on the back it encourages pulling.
  22. When my 1st border had a flea allergy, which caused hot spots the vet gave me a bottle of iodine, I think it was like betadine because it was dark brown. I had to mix it 1 part iodine to 10 parts water. It would clear them up overnight. That is until she had another outbreak. When I finally realized what it was, thank God for Advantage. I asked a few years later if I could still use the iodine & was told it would last forever.
  23. I would say 12 mths from the last puppy vac. My vet routinely gives C7. At a conference I went to a couple of years ago, one of the topics was puppy vaccinations. The American vet giving the talk said that she still recommends 3 puppy vacs. because the vets that only give 2 are doubling the dose. That's a lot for a little puppy to take on board.
  24. I went to the Homebush one, Animal Tracks. Sine is the president of my obedience club. The only thing they don't take them after 16 weeks. 25. Much better to give chunks of raw meat than mince which is stodgy. Make them big enough so he has to chew & rip into it rather than just swallow whole. Much better to give raw meaty bones but cut off excess fat.
