  1. I've always been concerned for puppy safety when they're little with the older dog. But once the pup starts growing & they become used to each other I can relax a little. I think if you supervise for the 1st couple of days & see how they get on.
  2. Would love to see you in the bc subbreed forum. I love my dogs but I don't like dogs licking me. The best way to try & stop it is to not let them do it by moving away & ignoring them. Each time you approach & pat them & they go to lick, take your hand away. Remove yourself from them. Try again & keep moving away if they go to lick. When they get the message & don't lick, go over board with praise & a food treat.
  3. I wouldn't worry about him too much. If he's quiet & likes his own company you are lucky. There are plenty of pups/dogs that winge & whine being left alone. Apart from the usual visits to the back yard I would only go out if you think he's into something that he shouldn't. And use the times for a little training to take his mind off what he was doing. You said your pup has lots of toys out with him. I would only have a couple out at a time & rotate them every couple of days. If he doesn't know what they're have a little game with them to show him what they are about.
  4. You've probably got your puppy by now, how was the trip? When we brought Tilba home she was 11w 5d's old. We had a 6 hr trip & let her out 3 times to toilet but she wouldn't. At the time she had had her 2nd vac. We were lucky in that the litter had travelled to & from Canberra when they were about 6 & 9 weeks old so she was well travelled.
  5. As far as I know for obedience & agility you need to belong to the appropriate club & have the dog registered with the local council. To trial you also need to join Dogs NSW.
  6. If that happens & he won't come back the best thing to do is run in the opposite direction or fall on the ground in a heap. He's sure to come back to you to see what's wrong. I am always wary of that advice, after a friend was told to do just that with her BC. Said BC looked around, couldn't find owner, paniced and took off. Went missing for an hour or so in the suburbs and the grounds only streets from a very busy major road. It was a very very anxious time for everyone there and involved in her search. I think you need to make sure the dog sees you fall down.
  7. Well done. That's fantastic news. You'll be entering trials in no time.
  8. I've been using the red light, green light method with my bc since I've had her at 3 m/o. She's now 17 m/o. She will try to pull occasionally but on the whole she's not too bad. Although I still have to remind her several times on a walk to not pull. I don't feel I need to use a halti or harness on her. The main thing to remember that you must not let her get away with a tight lead, ever. As the old saying goes 'give em an inch & they'll take a mile'. You said you don't turn around when the lead goes tight. You need to turn b4 she hits the end.
  9. Sent you a pm with a link to a good article on intro dog to cats.
  10. I used to take Tilba out b4 she had her 3rd vac but carried her. Towards the end she was getting rather heavy so I guess with a shephard pup that would be difficult. I was told she would have been ok after her 2nd vac but I didn't want to take chances. You could visit ppl with vac, friendly dogs in the mean time. I would ask your vet to make sure. We have puppies start at my obedience club with 2 vac & their vets have said its alright. Other vets advise to wait until vac course is finished. It all depends on what they see with pups with bad temperaments due to undersocialisation.
  11. Hello & welcome to Dol. It takes time for a puppy to get used to being away from all she knows & to get used to the rules of a new home. A good website to find out lots of info on dogs & puppies is www.dogstardaily.com Puppy preschool is a good idea for socialisation as all puppies are in the same boat as to vaccinations & it keeps them in touch with other puppies where in the past they were kept home until 3-4 mths old & miss the criticle period of socialisation. My young dog who I've had for just over a year is the 1st dog I've used a crate for. She travels in the car in it & when we are visiting shows etc. I used to put her in it at night & after a couple of weeks started making a big fuss to get out. I was willing to let her go but the workers in my family weren't happy with the noise. I eventually gave up & she now sleeps happily in her bed in her 'room' with our other dog. When I have the crate in the house with the door open she will go in there by herself for a nap.
  12. My dogs don't have access to water inside at night in the room they sleep in, but Tilba heads to the water bowl outside when she goes out for a toilet break.
  13. I read a disturbing article about dog treats, including pigs ears & raw hides, in issue 19, May 15 - August 14, 2009 of "urban animal". I advise everyone to find a copy & read the article on pages 8 - 13. You would certainly think twice about feeding them to your dogs.
  14. For NSW all I can think of is to check out the Dogs NSW website for training clubs. I had a quick look & I'm afraid the page for your area is unavailable atm.
  15. I should be going, I've gone every year since 2000. The zoo trip sounds fantastic.

  17. Tilba did it with a chicken wing the 1st time I gave her one. She took it & raced into her crate to eat it. Warning bells went off saying 'resourse guarding'. I would put a stop to it as it could lead to growling & even a bite. I looked on the net for a solution & the thing I found & did was to hold a raw bone while she started to eat it. The advice was that if you still have a hold of it, it still belongs to you, & nothing to guard for the dog. I only had to do it a couple of times & now she's fine with me being near her eating a bone. I was even able to move one when she was eating it on the mat & take it outside to the grass. Everyone should practice food bowl manners. Stand with your puppy while he eats every day or so. Don't take the food away but keep some of his meal or something really tasty & while he's eating drop it into his bowl. He'll soon realise that you are not a threat to his food. I can even pat Tilba while she eats & it doesn't bother her.
  18. Oh no, poor Chopper. I can feel your pain, & mine, I think I may have created the same with Tilba.
  19. You will need a friend with a non reactive dog to help you. You start off walking him at a distance that he will show no interest in another dog. You get a little closer & distract him with food treats when he looks at the dog. Over a period of time you get closer & closer rewarding him for paying attention to you & not the other dog. If he starts to react you've moved too close too soon. It takes time & consistency to work.
  20. Dreamy is definitely a broken beagle, Gills IMO you need to be more careful and precise when you are raising a pup on a raw diet than simlpy feeding table scraps and RMBs. Dogs need the right balance of bone, meat, offal, vegies etc. That's why I gave the link to the website. This link is on the site. :http://www.rawmeatybones.com/diet/exp-diet-guide.pdf
  21. Raw meaty bones & a few tabble scraps are all a dog needs. I used to do the Billinghurst diet b4 the pre-made patties when we 1st got Sooty. She's a lean dog & the vet almost had me for feeding her this way. So I caved & put her on kibble. But after reading Tom Lonsdale's books & reading & watching vids on his website, that's all a dog needs. After all they survived for thousands of years before kibble was invented. www.rawmeatybones.com To see the videos go to media archives.
  22. My dog is a bit the same way. She will grovvell to other dogs, wagging her tail & sometimes rolls on her back. i don't think its a real problem unless you pander to her & pat & cuddle her & say it's all right. The weeing thing is submissive urination & she has no control over it. My previous border April used to do it when I got home or she went to the vets. She grew out of it by about 1 y/o. Quite a lot of puppies do it. She may be in a fear period. As I said it's not the time to give in to her. Ignore it & she will soon outgrow it. Read the sticky at the top of this forum by K9force on puppy developement calendar. A tail wag isn't always a sign that a dog is friendly, you have to look at the rest of the dog. Such as ears, eyes, stance etc.
  23. I've used an older style halti on April. The nose strap was too close to her eyes & I rarely used it. My obedience club introduced Black Dog head collars & I like them better. If the dog gets the nose band off you still have the dog by its (BD) collar. When we 1st started using head collars we were told that you should use 2 leads or a double ended lead. You have one end on the dogs collar & this is the lead that's held shorter. The other end is on the halter & held loosely. I always found this to be awkward. I was always adjusting the leads. And April never liked wearing it. If I ever walk my son's dog I will use it. When we fit dogs with a halter we recommend they use it with a connector. Mostly now we sell easy walking harnesses which attach to the lead in the front of the dog. I need to use any of these things on my current dog as I've taught her not to pull, well, most of the time. The thing to remember is to not use the halter as you do a check collar. You can damage the dogs neck. Hence the use of 2 leads.
  24. Never really had that problem with Tilba. She is super friendly with women though & jumps on them. She will run around mad when she plays with poor arthritic Sooty, nine in Oct. But when my cat was a kitten, she had the crazies until at least 1 y/o b4 she started to settle down.
  25. Tilba had the 1st 2 vaccinations when with the breeder & my vet gave her C7. She recently had another C7 12 mths later which will be repeated in 3 yrs except for the kennel cough vac which should be done yearly. I went to a conference last year & one of the speakers was a vet & she told us that when puppies are only given 2 vac's the dose is stronger than the old 3 vac method.
