  1. thanks guys for your help. its just for evry day wear, not agitation work. the blockydogs collars look good, thanks kavik. i might look into getting one custom maid. with the martingale collars, they cant be left on during the day can they?? i never even thought of using one of thoughs. these arewhat i meant by agitation collars http://leerburg.com/leatheragitcollar.htm http://leerburg.com/1098.htm thanks again everyone for all your help. Cheers, Jess
  2. Hi everyone where sick of Chevy (mastiff) slipping out of her collar. :D i would like to know if anyone has, or knows where i can get a thick, maybe 2 inches, collar, as far as i know these types of collars are called agitation collars. i've looked around and only found american sights that have them, and i dont have a CC. thanks everyone in advance for any help. cheers, jess
  3. keep me posted on that too please. that would be really good to see. :p i've only been able to watch small bits of the videos (damn slow internet connection!!) but i love watching them. the mal looks sop happy, i love how much the dogs enjoy doing it. ETA - in the second video was that a GSD with a semi - docked tail???
  4. thanks everyone for your help. i will be consulting a profesional, theres one at my local club, we just have to be carefull that we dont get caught by the head people talking about them. some people have offered, privatly, to help me out and i'll try and take them up on that offer. i also have alot of faith in what Erny is doing, (btw the petition went around the centre on saturday, unfortunalty not the one i organised because they kept avoiding my phone calls, but anyway they got a fair few signitures) i only want to try a prong on kaiser, really just whilst hes going through this teenage stage after that i think he'll be fine. ETA- If you realised why i edited it, you might try to do it too, the trees have ears you know.....
  5. Hi guys i want to 'try' a prong on kaiser, he is currently going through his "im a teenage boy" stage, and is strangling himself on his chocker and not even noticing it. im having to correct him way harder than i'd like to and am probably starting to damage his neck. i am also worried because he's at that stage where is a dog has a go at him and he retaliates, and he's getting to be a big dog, and im not a very big girl. im worried that i may not beable to hold him back and something mght happen. anyway long story short does anyone have an old/cheaper prong that i could try or borrow, i dont see the point in going out and paying for a new one if i may never use it again. kaiser is a male dobe so would probably need a medium, not quite sure. the only problem with all this is i live in vic and have a dobe(the short hair can be a problem comapered to sheps with a mane) thanks everyone. Cheers Jess. BTW-no poilitcs or anything please, unless you have another suggestion on something other pp collars.
  6. im so sorry from your loss. it very hard to loose a Dobie. RIP Image.
  7. Hi erny, im still waiting for a response from my dog club as to whether they can send the petition around. there apparently having some trouble as they are not allowed to 'support' the use of pp collars, and a few people have complained about the use of them. i'll let you know as soon as i know anything. sorry it has taken sooooo long, phone call after phone call is getting me know where, if they still havn't called back by tuesday i'll give them another call. sorry again, jess.
  8. dont leave food permanently down for them (i am guilty of doing this) i recently found out it can lead to dominance as the dog just expects the food to always be there, and if he sees you give him the food, (and make sure he does) then he will look up to you as the more of a pack leader and rely on you as you are the almighty food bringer. hmmm, if they dig fill it with there poo, it can help them stop digging, or something hot ie pepper. if its important put it away. be prepared to have to buy ALOT of new things, clothes, couches, hoses, sprinkler systems just to name a few.
  9. anyone else doing the Cert 111 Canine Behaivour and Training starting August 1st. check your mail... i got my stuff today!! :D we need to get a thread going for any help, info ect. and is anyone attending the Vic block?? Cheers, Jess
  10. My lab turns one in a few weeks time and he still pees like a girl, must admit i am not really complaining, it looks pretty cute... he doesn't do anything in public either when we go for walks or dog school which is a relief hahaha this is what kiaser is like, he wont go anywhere in public, or anywhere but at home for that matter. i've spoken to a few behavourists but they dont know whats going on. i wouldn't mind (infact its a pretty good thing, no popper scooping) but it cant be good for him to hold on for so long. what if we go away for the W/E?? then what will happen?? anyone got any suggestions on how make a dog, whos toilet shy, go in public?? he does go on command bu7t only at home, so he does no a command for it.
  11. try asking in the breeders section. as they deal with that sort of thing alot i need to know as well, our mastiff is due to come in soon, and i'd like to know when i have to keep the boys away.
  12. Kaiser is the same, he's starting to settle a bit faster now. it takes him about half an hour to and hour to get the point - "go to sleep or go out side" you just have to be firm, maybe give them a bit of a cuddle when there staying.
  13. is anyone coming form the south east suburbs and going to the one at deakin tonight?? i have no way to get there.
  14. sorry i didn't go down to dog training on the W/E so i couldn't get it signed. i will hopefully be able to make it down this week end.
  15. the agility is for confidence not compition so it doesn't matter how they do it. that sound like a really good way of doing it, especially for a shy/scared dog.
  16. i never have before now but the instructers said the dogs are 'advanced' enough to if they need it. i dont like using one as the fear of it getting caught. kaiser runs up to the equpment then runs over them, what i've been trying to do is hold him round the chest when he goes up the ramp then hold him as he walks along the plank so that he slows down, then he has to stop and either stand or sit on the plank, then swalk down the other side. Are you a member of an obedience club? If so, ask one of the instructors there for a few pointers on how best to proceed with corrections at the moment. my obedience club told me to speak to K9 Force. i've been doing everything my club said, but i thought i'd ask around here and get some more opinions. i 100% agree with that one of the instructers 'suggested' to put it on. i like that, i'll read this over a few times then try it on Kaiser next time the agility is at our centre. our club starts agility from around 4-5 months, kaisers now 10 months, although hes only been on it a couple of times. i dont think he's excited by the other dogs because he doesnt care about the equipment till where about to use it, unlike some other dogs there that see the other dogs on it and cry. kaiser doesnt; seem to notice it till where right there. the moment i bring out food or a toy he forgets about the equipment, is this what you mean?? This commonly occurs if prior corrections have been ineffective, thereby desensitising to them. I don't view changing collars (eg. to something like the PPCollar) as an "up" in correction. Rather, it's a "different" correction and often achieves the desired responses so that rewards can be delivered more frequently. But in the case of corrections (and this applies to verbal corrections as well) I agree, whichever collar is used, the correction should be so that it is effective, using minimum impact for maximum behaviour change. If frequent corrections are required for the same behaviour, something is wrong and the first thing I check on is the handler's lead handling skill. Sometimes though, some dogs don't perceive certain corrections from certain other collars sufficiently enough - even when well and appropriately delivered, and a change of collar to something effective may serve in the dog's bests interests. this is waht i meant, but the going up in corecctions did not really have much to do with me, a couple of poeple had asked me this and i thought about it, and thought that i'd like to know. i also think i worded it wroong, maybe when do you need to change your dogs corrections, may have been a better way of putting it. thanks guys for all your suggestions and help. Jess
  17. thanks for your help. hes pretty good with distractions during training, and i dont correct him for being distracted, i either jingle his lead or withhold a treat reward. the problem is mainly when he gets too excited, ie other dogs (playtime) and agility. although i do love that he is excited to do the agility, he just needs to learn to wait his turn. i was reading that with a PP collar a level 9 correction on a choker only needs a level 3 correction on a PP, is this correct??
  18. Hi Dolers, i was just thinking, as a few people have also asked me. how do you know when your dog needs to go up a level in correction. for example - flat collar to martingale martingale to check chain/ choker check chain / choker to PP collar. ect thanks guys my main reason for adding this is, kaiser is ten months old and is starting to go through that teenage stage, he is not really responding to check chain corrections anymore, unless i really correct him, which i dont like doing. i am worried i am going to hurt his neck but he is not really responding to anything when he gets excited. for example today they had the agility equipment at training and at first he had his flat collar on and nearly pulled my shoulder blade out of its socket trying to get on the ramp (i have weak shoulders) so i put his choker back on and it made no difference. i am kinda considering trying a PP collar, but because i live in vic,its kinda hard just to "try" one for a lesson. i dont really think kaiser will need a PP for long just whilst he's in this stage. does anyone have any suggestions of something else that may work other than a PP, as i have weak shoulders i can correct but if he pulls when im not expecting it, it can be quite painful. Thanks again DOLers. Jessca
  19. i'll take the petition to my local dog training club and get the owners that use pp collars to sign it. i wont get many but i should be able to get ten, hopefully. good luck with everything Erny. Jess.
  20. thanks guys for all your help,i got a laugh out of reading some of your respnoses, and i dont feel so bad now seeing Kaiser pee like a girl, but its probably the only time he stacks perfectly. thanks again. hopefully one day he may lift his leg......
  21. i was just wondering the average age a male starts to lift his led to pee. Kaisers 10 months old and im just thinking when will he start to lift? i know every dog is different but im just curious to know the average. as he doesn't go to the toilet in public i has hoping if he started lifting his leg he wouldn;t hold it all day till we get home. thanks for any help.
  22. thanks for that, after reading more into them on Leerburg i found that they quite often break and come apart, which even with a back up collar you still dont want that to happen. thanks again.
  23. dont know they just looked like a good idea, easier to remove i suppose. but as i have never used a prong before i wouldn't know how difficult they are to remove.
  24. hmm ok thanks for that. cause sleeves are $550 in Oz and $120 in america. seems stupid not to import.
