  1. Poor little mate  I would imagine the best you thing you can do to encourage him is offer him kindness and patience. I dont believe in feeding any of my dogs anything "human", but with this little guy its different. He needs all the encouragement he can get and it wont cost anything. I would try and encourage him with cooked chicken, tuna, or anything else you can think of that would be considered an over the top delicacy for your average dog ! Also milk dogs love milk and I feel as though its a good supliment if they wont eat. Try cracking an egg in it aswell. My dog is currently on a hunger strike aswell which im trying to solve, but with her its just because she is one of those 1 in 10 pain in the butt dogs that only eat enough to stay alive
  2. Omg is he cute or what ! Look at the little guy Any wonder your attached to him. What a little champion.
  3. She is nearly 18 months. Yes its not the type of food that is the problem. She rejects all kinds of irresistable foods such as chicken drumsticks, mince meat, ect. ellz do you have any recomendations regarding Periactin dosage ? taters so encouraging to hear how well Nutrigel works for you dog lets hope it works the same for my girl.
  4. puggy puggy, she dosnt have any other symptons that I would associate with tonsillitis . Apart from not eating she acts as though she is in good health. She also dosnt have a problem barking, ect. Ill keep it in mind I sure hope she dosnt have tonsilitis or god forbid anything more serious I'll see how she goes over the next few days with this other stuff otherwise she can take a trip to the vets to look her over.
  5. Ok thanks ill check my local pet supply for Nutrigel tomorrow hopefully they will have it. ellz according to various sources on the internet Periactin is an antihistamine used to for treating allergies - but is commonly used as an appetite stimulate. Thats unusual isnt it. Well thanks you guys I will buy both products and see how I go. I sure hope something works.
  6. Oh no sorry hear it ! I hope the little mate is ok.
  7. Does anyone know about such a thing ? I know they exist for humans, I wonder if you can get something for the dog. Jordy is one of those dogs that has some kind of aversion to eating properly. She likes the theory behind eating, as she wont let another dog so much as look in her direction when she has food, but she just dosnt like actually eating it. She has always pretty much been this way. She goes through phases where she does eat all her dinner, then other times when she kind of eat a bit of it, and other times when she will eat next to nothing for days. She is not eating at the moment, its been about 3 days. She has eaten about a cup worth of kibble and about 500grams of dog roll in 3 days. As a result I would describe her condition as trim. She probably isnt strictly speaking underweight but I would suggest that her ideal weight would be an extra 3-4 kg. She is 16.4kg right now. I wonder if it would work this way - and im not quite to sure - But my theory goes get her on something that will get her to woof her food down, get her weight optimum and maintain it for a few months, then hopefully she would have learned the habit of how to eat properly and will feel the need to maintain her weight on her own.
  8. is she Maybe you see if you can identify a pattern to her behaviour to try and work out why she sometimes pees in the house. Is it always in the same spot ? Could it be something messing up her routine that triggers it ? Stuff like that see if you can run down the list and maybe isolate a reason.
  9. Haha. Thats the sort of logic that a child would understand. The dog has no clue why its sleeping on the floor I dont really know what to do. I have never really had the need to correct a dog from eliminating in the house. Iv always just - Well I dont really know ! Iv just got them in a habit of knowing where to eliminate, I dont really know how. Sorry no help here But seriously apart from what the husband is doing which obviously isnt going to work I dont think there is a need for any kind of correction just gentle persuasion. Outsmart it its only a puppy !
  10. Some great ideas there Tony, thanks ! Ill be sure to take a look at K9Forces website. This week im placing an order for a dvd from http://leerburg.com. I am going to start with just the one "How to raise a working puppy" or "your puppy 8 weeks - 8 months". No I am not using these games as a reward for anything. Should I be ? A reward for what kind of task as an example ?
  11. Thats right its a whole different story with pups.
  12. They just looks like they want to play. I think your dog is showing alot of curiosity in the pup. Your dog has no need to be fear aggressive. Its just a puppy. Aggression toward small dogs is usually prey driven and that is a seperate problem. The reasons she wants to nail large dogs could be dominance or fear motivated - but I dont think that translates to what you see here. So no just based on this you cannot rule out what you observed before hand re - that Kaos is fear aggressive.
  13. I have wondered this for some time. What is the best way to end the following games - One game I play with my dog is balloons. She likes juggling them in the air and trying to bust them. When she busts it, drive is satisfied, game is over - thats an easy one. But some other games we play include Fetch - How do I end this game ? When she brings it back and drops it, should I just put it in my pocket and that it ? Hose - I turn the hose on high and spray it around at things. I dont know how to satisfy her drive in this game. She like to chase it, (she is very intense when doing this) and she likes to try and catch it in her mouth. Any ideas ? Tug of war - How do I end this game. I want her to win to build her confidence. At the moment, I let her win, I let her chew the object for a half minute or so, then I take it away. Is this right ? Is drive satisfyied when she shakes the toy and wins (I let go) or chewing it after wards ?
  14. Thats sounds like a good start WalandLibby. Yes i'll have to see what I can come up with along those lines. No I didnt really teach her to retrieve .. I played a small part in it mostly it was instinct. She would only half return the ball I had to encourage her and now she brings it all the way back, also I had to teach her to drop but apart from that she did it on her own. She will be allowed to put the item down and do whatever she does such as have a sniff around, investigate something, or whatever, but then she has to pick the item back up again and keep going rather than leaving it behind, so she will be fine she wont be uncomfortable.
  15. It does sound like a puppy thing, but not a good puppy thing  Id talk to a behaviourist and see what solution they can offer you, they should be able to teach you how to "unteach" your doberman the biting. Dosnt sound like a big deal to me but your right your going to want to correct the problem because its no good. I saw the funniest staffy at the park once. It was straining the lead trying to get to my dog (I didnt let them play because she was a baby puppy at the time) and it was snapping its mouth open and shut in excitement. It was LOUD I mean this bloke was really snapping over and over what a character
  16. Here we go. This guy is carrying a bag of groceries ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVfuZV4PxFE
  17. Haha ! Thats funny. I like 28 seconds with the shoe, he figures he might use his paw to help him out  Yes well thats right thats an example of something I might be able to do later there are many. Yes she does know how to retrieve but she does that because she wants that item, and because she knows that if she carries it back to me something great will happen, I will throw it again ! Example of where this could have a practical use. We are out on a walk. I see a tennis ball. I dont want to pick it up and carry it myself because I have her in one hand and who knows I might have a bag full of you know what in the other. She isnt interested in the ball right now but she will appreciate having another ball to rip apart at a later stage. Now, Jordy, heres the ball, carry it home, all the way home. Not carry it for a few minutes and then get bored and leave it behind I can get her to do it until she gets bored of it. But while she still has enthusiasm for the item she retains it and im able to encourage her to pick it back up and keep going if she puts it down, but only for a little while. I dont want to keep doing this because im going to end up teaching her that when it gets boring, leaving it behind is part of the routine, so I want to stop this training until I know how to do it right.
  18. I wonder if anyone has taught the following, or might have some ideas. I want to teach my dog how to pick up a certain item on command, then carry it until told otherwise. Or, maybe I could give an item to the dog, and then she must carry it until told to let it go. Take a walk for instance, we could do this for practice as part of her training. She is given an item when we leave, and she carries it for the duration of the walk. Its ok if she puts it down for a second while shes sniffs around for whatever reason, but then she has to pick it up and take it with her again before she leaves. I think it would be a neat trick and im sure once she (and I) know how there will be many ways I will be able to adapt this skill in other training in the future.
  19. Nice what a beautiful girl ! And the black one too
  20. Beautiful dog how about a bigger pic pittylover ? Surprisingly I dont find vets to necessarily be breed id experts some can seem pretty vague. I think iv found some that really dont know, and others that know but dont say anything. I know what you mean. When I moved and had to find a new vet I wasnt looking forward to it. I walked into the one im at now and there was a cranky old bitch at the reception I thought yeh great. Anyway I got passed her and the vet is the NICEST lady ever. She knows what breed my dog is she dosnt care shes just a really really nice lady. Well that first day as I come out I saw a girl in the waiting area with another pitty ! I pulled her aside and talked to her she said yeh this vets great lots of pitties come here ! In Sydney no vet iv come across could care less but in these regional areas iv found people are alot more uptight about Pitties so yes I know what you mean it is nerve racking choosing a new vet.
  21. Desexing isnt going to change the aggression desexing may or may not have its merits for you for other reasons but aggression is not one of them. My suggestion to prevent fights over food is simply to feed them seperatly and dont leave any old bones laying around the yard ect. That will solve that problem. What were the reasons for thier other 2 tiffs ? The only problem you wont solve (or you might but only with the help of a behaviourist) is if and when they start fighting for dominance reasons. Ie Bullmastiff wants to be incharge, bitch dosnt let him. Although my belief is that this type of fighting is not common between dog and bitch dog dosnt usually challenge bitch for dominance unless he is particularly aggressive. Another precaution you could consider to prevent problems before they happen is to not leave toys lying around they can be as much of a trigger as food.
  22. Nice one sMs ! Yes good one. It will provide comfort but not sure how warm it will keep her compared to a doona or blanket, but then again she sleeps ontop of it not under it. deelee2 yep sounds very familiar. I have tried the suspended dog bed before they sure can be chewed. I dont think I ever saw her sleep on it she only played on it and destroyed it all except the metal frame.
  23. very odd charlie mum Yes persophone very annoying indeed it sure is getting that way. I actually think scrunch up newspaper is a pretty good idea. I may try that maybe I can do it for a few weeks im sure she will have a ball ripping it all apart maybe it will help divert her attention from the bedding and then maybe I can gradually remove the newspaper and she will be cured. Worth a try I like it. See the bedding differs from her bones and toys because she can actually rip it into little pieces so maybe thats why she does it.
  24. I dont know what advice I expect here maybe a few idea I guess. My dog is around 18 months and she chews her bedding. I havnt put a stop to it because for one thing I dont know how, and second I have had a stockpile of old blankets and that which I replace the eaten ones with but now im running out She is provided with many chewing alternatives all of which she uses very much. These include bones, tug toys, balls, and a kong, but still also chews her bedding aswell. When I catch her I stop her but its not working she still does it when im not looking. Apart from her bedding she is not really that much of a problem chewer. She does not chew her doghouse or furniture, but does seem to chew buckets ect pretty much anything plastic. Also not sure if this might be related but since she was a pup she has always had a drink out of her bowl and then tipped it over and carried the bowl away. Recently I have glued it to the ground I only did that some days ago. She has not attempted to rip it up yet so we will see maybe that problem is fixed but still the bedding problem remains.
  25. Give it a rest Nekhbet. People complain because your probably overpriced why wouldnt they complain. Yes ofcourse there are expenses involved everyones heard all that before but alot of vets are a rip off its as simple as that people have every right to scoff at the prices. How about if you dont like it ask them to leave and go somewere else I bet you dont do that.
