  1. Hi all I have searched for the above topic, but the only thread I could find was quite old, so hope you don't mind me asking again. Can anyone recommend liability insurance for a groomer? I've had a quote from Premier Pets, but just wanted to compare premium prices. Thanks
  2. Can I cross-post the response you received on another bullbreed specific forum (or perhaps if you are a member there, you might want to?). Only reason I ask, is because this topic has been brought up before to the GB & NI Breed Council, (I was majorly concerned after I emailed the UK Kennel Club asking the same pertinent questions regarding blue coat, blue nose issue and got a rather ridiculous reply), I feel it is important to let other Stafford enthusiasts see what the Breed Council has to say. ETA Most may well have already had the information from the Breed Council anyway...
  3. Really? That's great news. Now.... do you have a link to the news report that tells us that? lol
  4. I think that was the dog, (the name is right) though it was reported as an American Staffordshire Bull Terrier in the news item. I don't know if this article might give you more info, if you think it's the same dog. http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/188558-assistance-dogs-news-articles/page__view__findpost__p__4309954 Nope, sadly I think that is a different dog. Definitely wasn't a Min Pin, and the dog was an assistance dog for a child rather than an adult. Thanks though.
  5. Cool - on that note I'm gonna start calling the Leek Bull Terriers (another town in Staffordshire) (my tongue is obviously firmly in cheek also) ;) lol, in that case, let's get it right and call them Cradley Heath Bull Terriers... where the pub The Old Crossguns is, where Mallen and Dunn met with other breeders to form the Original Staffordshire Terrier Club (before the Bull came in - pardon the pun!). ;)

  7. I'm sad that you feel like that. I'd like to add, that because the girl (who owned the 3 fluffies, and I also apologies for calling them fluffies, but I have no idea what breed they were!) was in such a state, I continued my walk, took my two dogs home and then (as she didn't live too far away), walked back to her house, knocked on her door and asked her if SHE was ok. I told her that though my two were under my control and wouldn't be too reactive, they weren't particularly keen on having their backsides chewed by little dogs. I also added that I was more concerned about her dogs being run over if she couldn't recall them! She appreciated the gesture, but was more worried that my dogs were 'big', not the fact that her 3 dogs were waaaaaaaaaay out of control. Go figure.
  8. not to be pedantic - but if one of your peeves is people naming them wrong - shouldn't you then also be calling them Staffordshire and not just Stafford? ;) (tongue in cheek a bit here) Not necessarily, as Stafford is a major town within Staffordshire in England, where the originators of the breed were from, rather than just an abbreviation such as 'staffy'.
  9. Yep - off leash ANYTHING. But off leash white fluffies do my nut in. Got harrassed by 3 of the buggers that came charging out of their owners home 100 metres down the road, teeth bared to get at my two Staffords. Thankfully my two are always under control, disinterested and carried on walking by my side. BUT the owner of the white fluffies was crapping herself and almost crying trying to run around trying to gather her voracious little 'loves' up. Can imagine her breed prejudice being different to mine
  10. You'll also find the PhPv and PPSC are two other eye problems that can sometimes occur within Staffords. Though mode of inheritance is unknown (and is thought to be congenital), the UK Breed Council does recommend yearly testing. Sick to the back teeth of the blue Stafford thing tbh. Sick to the back teeth of reading adverts by 'breeders' who can't even type the abbreviation for an inherited disorder properly (L2Hga). Q.Reason for not seeing so many blue Staffords in rescue? (Compared to x-breed Staffords and other colours). A.Because a heck of a lot of the people who bought blues in the first place know when they're onto a money spinner, imo.
  11. Thanks all for looking, I've tried the major network websites, but still can't find anything. I'll email them as suggested. Thanks again.
  12. Did anyone else see this on tonights Channel 9 news? I'm on the Gold Coast so guess the news is local, but wasn't 100% sure. Reason for asking, I didn't hear where the dog had been stolen from (area) and was hoping there might be a link online to be able to cross-post? Really feel for the little girl who the assitant dog ...well... assists. Cheers.
  13. Just a quick question. My female, almost 9 year old, Stafford has developed a hard-ish lump on her right hand side...around the waist area. It only seems to have developed overnight, after she had a particularly stressed evening due to thunderstorm. She's eating and drinking fine, had her walk this morning & doesn't seem to be in any discomfort (though being a Stafford can often hide it well!). (And I think has had bowel movement). Just wondering if anyone knows what it might be? Probably around the size of a 10c coin. Obviously I'm not going to wait around too long and keep an eye on her and take to vet within the next 24 hours, just in case it is a hernia... But just wasn't sure because of where it is on her abdomen. Any advice appreciated! Thanks.
  14. I too have travelled to Qld from the UK. I brought my two dogs with me. I wouldn't have come if I couldn't have brought them with me. However, my family and I were lucky enough to have the funds at that time to be able to do so. IF we ever had to go back (and there is certainly no intention to!!!), I wouldn't travel without the dogs. It might mean (circumstances permitting) waiting until we could afford to transport the dogs back, but by hook or by crook, they'd still be coming with us as they're part of the family. I had a pretty good experience with the quarantine shelter in Sydney, didn't have a problem with them. One of my dogs was over 7 years old, so she was a bit of a worry. Believe me the thought of the pair of them on a plane for 24 hours threw me into complete wracks of guilt and worry. But, thankfully, they came through ok and are now really settled. I've also worked at a rescue shelter here, and I have to say that the two biggest reasons for people surrendering their pets was either due to relocation (mostly NOT overseas) or a new baby. I found it very difficult to comprehend. Really, really difficult to comprehend actually BUT what I had to tell myself was 'they're not YOU Trace, just because their circumstances are different and they've made a decision you wouldn't, you can't really be judgemental'. Don't get me wrong, there were some unsavoury so-and-so's and after talking 'in depth' with them, you kinda knew that the 'excuse' was pretty much bulldust, but as sandgrubber has said, rehoming isn't always cruel, and often a lot of these pets were better off. We also had the genuine peeps who truly truly broke their hearts having to rehome their pets, and these guys are the one's I really felt for. Because as I've said, even though I've chosen and been lucky enough to have my dogs with me on both sides of the world, I wouldn't ever, ever want to have a decision such as rehoming a pet thrust upon me.
  15. They are banned/restricted because Australia Is a land of sheep, and they followed suit with the British I ask sensible question please, if the breed is not a problem and is good placid and reliable for nice pet, why is so many countries ban the breed becuase how can so many get it wrong in their opinion then saying the Pitbull is dangerous dog if it is really beautiful dog that could never hurting a fly? I dont seeing any action to banning the poodle or the Labrador why is this? Joe And the British are in the process of trying to get shot of laws such as the Dangerous Dogs Act.
  16. Good job on all of your pics - well done! One weeny piece of advice that I was given with regard to shading (it can be used for drawing from photo's, to still life, to getting the shadows just right in a landscape) is to look at the subject matter through squinted eyes. This intensifies any shadow and gives you a better idea of where light and shade should fall.
  17. I lurrrve my Andis clippers, have tried the Wahl brand and not quite as keen on them. One pair of my Andis clippers are single speed and haven't any probs getting through a poodle coat, nor did the suffer too many probs getting through the hugely matted and long coated Kerry Blue that I groomed a couple of days ago.
  18. [quote name=john.davey.1960' date='19th Mar 2011 - 12:39 PM' post=' The UK police use a series of measurements to decide the breed of a dog and whether to kill the dog or not. I have not been able to find out what exactly they are and whether they are scientifically based or not. Here you are John, not sure if this is still the most up to date version, but this is part of the breed id info. http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets...e-enforcers.pdf
  19. kirst have sent you a pm, cos i've got a few questions! hope you dont mind (dont want to hijack someone elses thread here). I'm getting nervous about this job now! lol
  20. TT - unless you are a junior, I think $18 an hour is way too low. Is it casual rates or permanent full time? Fancy a move to Victoria? We are interviewing right now. Sags Nope, not a junior, though I've been grooming for the amount of time I have, I have had breaks and so I do need to get my speed up a bit. But I will be their only groomer. I guess it would be classed as casual, as the owner has said to me they could either pay me a wage, OR I essentially sub contract to them and invoice them each week for my hours (however I guess that also means I'm liable to pay my own GST) Wish I could move to Victoria, I'd work damn hard for you! Rethinking the whole job offer now! lol
  21. Well... my experiences has shown me that the prices quoted throughout this thread seem about right. I've been grooming for just over two years. I desperately want to work for myself, but at the moment, funds aren't being cooperative! I've just been offered a job in a salon, $18 an hour. Ouch! In both respects - physically and financially! Might have to reconsider. Yes, it will be great for keeping my speed up, but I have a feeling as the primary groomer, I'm going to be inundated and feel rushed into doing more dogs than I'm comfortable doing. I, like you and many other groomers Kirstgoldens, want to make a darn good job of each dog I groom, not just rush through to make the owners of the salon bags of money Feeling unsure about the whole thing now.
  22. Through committee stage. http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/3622/23/5/3 To keep track of the process see here: http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2010-1...gcontrolhl.html
  23. Delayed.......... http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/peterwed...-filibustering/
  24. You can bring in a voice cue or tap to the left leg to signal to her that she has the green light to "heel". The behaviour is maintained by rewarding it. Once you have the cue you aim to have it under stimulus control, which means she does it when you cue it. And not when you don't cue it. You do this just by rewarding her when she does it on cue but not rewarding it any other time. Great, thanks Corvus I knew I'd get the advice I needed here! Today is only day one, so practice practice
