  2. i think they are cold. they are both still puppies and i would bring them in over winter.
  3. make a paste of baking soda and water and apply to the affected area ets maybe stingose would help as well and the really old cure is to get dock leaves and rub on the affeted area
  4. That rock you crawled out of is lonely. Th th th that's all ! wow, that it extreme given you have posted on a public forum and wanted people to comment
  5. wow, you know this how? it is good that your methods worked for you but your post comes across really badly almost arrogantly and definately "know it all". i have read many of Erny's replies and posts since i have been a member of DOL and i believe anyone would get something out of a session with her. to the OP, good luck with your one on one training, like you i prefer to talk to a human one on one to learn, especially if i can't manage to do something that i could with other dogs.
  6. I do that . But also to 'check in' in case there is a better 'way' (technique) or understanding that I might learn. I think you learn more 'arguing' your belief (provided you can argue it but remain open-minded enough to acknowledge and even concede some points, even if they don't agree with your own) rather than merely talking to or with the 'converted'. I've been accused and thought of as argumentative for this reason, but it is really my way of checking on my own beliefs, to see if they are solid. But I've also been accused of being argumentative when I've questioned things I don't understand fully and also as my way of checking that I do understand fully. And of course, any 'argument' doesn't have to be with another person. You can argue with yourself by tossing what you've heard around in your head as well. i do this as well. it is always not personal but sometimes i need to ask questions or make statements to see if it is really what i think or have learned. the point about an open mind is vital because if i don't have that then i am just being argumentative for the sake of it. i don't know how to attach more than one quote but i totally agree with AsQuickAsYouCan, a good non-personal debate is great and i have also learned a lot from this post. better than that, i have had to really think about what i do believe in and challenge myself in some of those ideas. sometimes it is very easy for me (and probably others) to just accept what i know as being correct because of habit and a good jolt to this helps me be a better dog owner, which is really what i want to be. i have had dogs for many (too many :D ) years and my methods have changed as i learn more and as community attitudes change. i like to keep up with the latest new thing, which is sometimes eerily like the old!!! the end result is to try to find the best way for me help my dogs reach their full potential. i would like more discussions that have been like this one, thank you all again!! eta AQAYC, i am also originally from the UK and i also remember how we used to train our dogs, we often just opened the front door and let them out so they could go to the toilet then we would whistle for them to come home :D no picking up of dog pooh and no thought that they would come to any harm
  7. i am glad you got the photo's. he is a good photographer.
  8. i do not think that every methodologies techniques should be used, ie i don't think that you need to follow everything in each methodology or try every technique. i choose which fits for the dog i am working with and my set of values. the above para of yours is indeed thought provoking and something i had not considered, thank you!!! i think you are onto something here. when i work with my dog, i make sure i am in the right frame of mind. i don't work with her if i am already feeling frustrated etc. so i always try to be in a calm and assertive frame of mind. i always think before i give any correction if the correction is really necessary and i always think of what is the right type of correction to use. because i have been doing this for a long time it doesn't take me long to think this through. i know i never "over correct", ie the correction fits the mistake. so i am very measured when i do this. however, i have also seen people loose it when they have over corrected their dog and in particular saw one guy beat his dog after training because the dog didn't pass the class. (i did something about it.). in this case he had no self control so i know what you mean. Maybe the milder methodologies are the right methodologies for people who are starting out with training as they can't do so much damage to the dog if they don't get it quite right. this does not mean that if more experienced trainers choose this methodology that they are poor trainers, it just means this works best for their dog. hmmmm....much to think of in this thread, thank you all once again.
  9. and now i get it, it's a no-win situation and here am i wanting a win-win!! . No matter Jaxx'sBuddy. Main thing is (IMO) that your mind is open . And also, by having a philosophy you're going to be seen as at least partly right by everybody . :D :D
  10. and now i get it, it's a no-win situation and here am i wanting a win-win!!
  11. ok you are right Erny. i do believe that if a person uses a method or technique and it is not working but they persist with the technique then i do think they should try something else and if they don't then they are wrong or not doing the best for their dog. damn!!! i hate being judgmental.
  12. But that's exactly what some "camps" disagree on. So you see, even when you embrace them all (as I and others do), you are also simultaneously saying that those that don't are in your opinion incorrect. IOW, you are in the "embrace 'em all" camp ETA: Wow! That was exciting! Have only just noticed the new "group hug" emoticon and I got to use it . Erny i will need to think about that. my first thoughts are i don't really care if others choose only one method or others choose many. what i care about is having a method that works for the dog in question. i tried several methods before i found one that worked with my dog. if i was closed minded then maybe i wouldn't have found the one that worked. but back to what you said about the "embrace em all" simultaneously saying other who don't are incorrrect, i will need more time to think about this. thank you for making me think tho'!!
  13. its amazing what we do for them isn't it? if i told anyone who didn't have dogs the things i have done they would think i was crazy :D
  14. well- get a mince with lots of bone in That way he is getting the calcium carbonate hardening the stool- and no risk of damaging his teeth . or maybe get chicken frames minced so she has the bone content
  15. i think he is highly instinctual which means he does not have an "accepted" methodology to fall back on. i think this causes some people who have trained in dog behaviour to be sceptical of his methods. with the many methodologies in dog training around i think that people will choose what method works best for their dog and not every methodology will work on every dog. i don't understand why there has to be "camps" of people grouped around each method each camp yelling that the other is wrong or not quite right. IMO the more methods the better because for sure one of the methods will work with any dog.
  16. are her poohs solid? if they aren't then maybe she needs her food changed. does she get bones that she can chew and swallow? they help with firm poohs.
  17. I put a similar disclaimer on my emails when giving out info to a client - this information is for the dog analysed please do not pass this on to other people. similar behaviors can be form different causes. One person goes 'oh my dog does that!' tries it and regresses the dog or doesnt fully understand what they are doing and make it worst. It's not training a trick it's dealing with a potentially dangerous situation with a stressed dog. Isn't that more responsible then 'hey go home and give it a go yourself!'. Sure, the disclaimer has a purpose on a show that is purportedly for entertainment. But the purpose is not dog training. So my question still stands, why do people leap to defend him against Cesar "bashing" but let snarking at just about any other well known trainer just slide on through? Especially as Cesar is by far the more popular and influential person. Why does he inspire people to defend him when experts are either lukewarm about him or actively critical of him? i am not sure why people defend cesar or not but what i do know is that his program has brought dog training to the forefront and this has to be good for the general public. he also advocates desexing dogs, looking after them well etc so again, this is good for the GP. even though we all think about training and managing dog behaviour the GP really don't so any program that shows a variety of dog behaviours that may seem very bad but can be resolved by training may just help reduce the number of dogs that are put into pounds as hopeless cases. i don't advocate or defend him i just think the fact that there is a dog training program on TV is good. the same goes for it's me or the dog, good for the GP to see dog training can solve some issues
  18. ok if the program says it can find and recover the files, you can unplug from the pc,but still DO NOT take any photos with the card. buy the product if you can and get the photos off the card. once you have done this you are home and hosed!!!!
  19. my observation is that we are all passionate people about our dogs and the training of them. sometimes because of this we can loose perspective and our words don't come out as we really mean or want them too. i would rather be passionate and have discussions with passionate people than have ho hum converstaions about something that is not important to me. in the end we are trying what we can and what we know to manage the best we can with the dogs we have in our lives with all their individual quirks.
  20. i have two children and i have successfully used punishment with them. they are now law abiding, hard working, contributing memebrs of the community. they love me, even visit me and we have an extremely close bond that punishment did not break. i dread to think what they would have turned out like if i had never punished them, grounded them or given them boundaries. i see raising a dog the same as raising children, they need to know what's right, what's wrong and how to behave when they go out.
  21. that is why i think DOL is such a good forum because there is often more than one view expressed and this makes me think!!!! i might not always initially agree with what someone has written but sometimes i change my mind based on the discussion. it does surprise me that it has been said that some people are too fearful to post but i agree with you in that it may be their individual issue and not an issue with this forum. ETA the best thing about discussions and this forum is that we are here to try to do the best thing by our dogs and in my case i want to ensure that i look after her in the best way possible. not having a perfect dog i look at all opinions in helping her become a well balanced dog.
  22. surely people choose forums that support their way of doing things? if this forum was only for positively based training methods, whilst that may hold some interest for me as it is another type of training methodology, it is not a forum that i would contribute to as my view is that dogs sometimes need corrections that are physical. there will always be differences in opinion around training but it should be around the methodology, not personal digs at others, and it should be educational so that we can all learn something of value. if there are people on here that are frightened to post then maybe this isn't the right forum for them and it may be helpful to them if they looked for another forum that supported their views. if they found a forum like that then they would not fear posting to it.
  23. the most important thing to do is to NOT take any more photos using the card as this makes it really difficult to recover files. you should be able to recover the files as they aren't fully deleted. if you can connect the card to a pc then any of the undelete programs should recover the files
  24. i feed raw fish. pilchards are really good. i have fed tommy ruffs but i take the spines off the backbone before i give them to the dog. she gets 2 small pilchards twice or three times a week.
