  1. Anything you feed your dog no matter what brand or how expensive is capable of causing a reaction if your dog is sensitive to one or more of the ingredients. Compare the labels, see what they have in common, try something else that has unique ingredients, see what happens.
  2. If a slicker brush is used properly in the first place, there would be no matting.
  3. I wouldn't change, I feed what my dogs do best on, the price really isn't an issue.
  4. Don't give the coat a chance to matt, use a comb on his face, a slicker on his legs and tail.
  5. My experience has been that Whippets are simply one of the BEST childrens dogs, and to top that off they can and do live very happily with all other pets when raised to do so. The thing to remember is that each and every dog is an individual, and there are always exceptions to the rule, but in my experience Whippets raised with kids and cats are no problem at all. Choose a breeder who does not have flighty nervous animals, and there are some I am sad to say, bring your pup home and right from day one allow it to experience calm, dog friendly cats and children. Do not make the mistake of your baby being the first your Whippet meets, teach basic manners and I doubt you will have any problems.
  6. Our dogs do a great job on the foxes, If your dogs have access to the area where poultry are at night time they should do the same. Most dogs will alert that there is a fox, even if they do not chase it off, that's what good country dogs do.
  7. Good Vibes to the pups concerned. It is going to be a nasty summer for snakes. In 12 months time you could rename the list to Vets who went under. Vets like any other business have to pay for their supplies few can afford to carry too many clients for expensive procedures. It is up to individual owners to make arrangements, and personally if you all continue to switch vets and shop around no one will want to deal with you, as you will not be an established client with a history. I get sick of talking to the debt collection company every week to update our tardy payers. What a list of easy going Vets will do is send the serial defaulters in their direction.
  8. We get free freight if we order enough each time, sunshine and thats about it then have to lug the stuff around the clinic and out to cars, may be we just don't do it right. Oh I forgot we get a packet of Tim tams or Mint slices in winter and chips or pods in summer. The bonus points with the drug companies don't give us anything worth pushing dog food onto customers for.
  9. Please explain what these kickbacks are, maybe our clinic can arrange to get some of them.
  10. I agree raw is best, but I have to comment on this, what bonuses?? In all the years I have worked in and around Vet Surgerys we have never received any kickbacks for selling food. Maybe the odd bunus buy of bigger bag for same price, or a storage bin which are passed on to the customers. It is a fallacy that Vets sell the food because the receive kickbacks for doing so, it is stocked by the major Vet Wholesalers, and it is easy to sell food to the customer than to try and deal with constant questions on feeding, or dealing with malnourished pets and yes that still happens today, but kickbacks, sorry I know of none.
  11. I have never witnessed a castration done without a general, ever! I have however seen apparently healthy animals die suddenly, during a normal, smooth procedure.
  12. General Anaesthesia of any animal or human carries a risk. Deaths happen, unfortunate, sad, but a fact. It is not common, but it happens.
  13. Although we consider these procedures "routine" the fact is that any procedure that involves general anaesthesia carries a risk. The dog may have had a reaction to the anaesthesia agent, it may have had an underlying heart issue, it could have been one of several things. What a terrible shock for the owners it must have been.
  14. You really need to find out out which product is working best in your area. Fleas are becoming resistant to some of the products in use, so ask around your friends and find what is working for them. Don't forget to treat your home, their bedding and possibly your car.
  15. He looks like he still teething with those ears! What a pair of cuties.
  16. A correct LH Chi coat does not require clipping.
  17. That diet would be fine for your dog, but you will have everyone jumping up and down on here saying make it yourself...LOL. The thing is not everyone wants to fiddle around and do it themselves, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you go for BARF patties and bones and your dog is healthy and happy then you are doing the right thing. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty for the informed choices you make for your dog.
  18. Dogs with blindness adjust, more so if it is a gradual deterioration of the eyesight, you need to make some changes to the way you do things, but it is easy. Always leave their food and water in the same place, do not go moving furniture around or leave obstacles in doorways etc. As long as they know where everything is they cope just fine. I know of blind dogs that still play fetch, they retrieve toys with bells in them they hear where they land. Blindness is not a death sentence.
  19. If you buy the barf patties in the original box, like they are meant to be sold, the ingredients are listed on the box. Personally I think the man has done a good thing for australian dogs, he has raised awareness amongst owners, this is always a good thing. His books were out out long before he started manufacturing the patties, and considering how lazy we are as a species, I'd say saw the niche and went for it. Good on him. Yes, you can make it yourself cheaper, but many bemoan the time it takes. Has to be better than imported crap in a bag, Yes.
  20. I had an elderly boxer who had seizures, but I stress she was elderly, she was nearly 14yo. Your old boy is 13, the chances are it is nothing at all Breed related. I have seen many dogs suffer seizures in old age, different breeds.
  21. Put their feet in an old stocking and push the nails through, stops the hair getting caught up.
  22. I think Mum to Emma that you are assuming that Vets pay the same price for the drugs that the pharmacy does, in fact it is generally more expensive.
