  1. Get her lungs checked out. A friend of mine had a dog which was diagnosed & treated for pneumonia. Unfortunately the pneumonia turned out to be a grass seed abscess on the lungs
  2. Really have no words of advice; the only comfort I can offer is the fact she survived so long before veterinary intervention means she is one tough critter & won't be giving in easily! Cats will often pull through after days of being paralyzed on a drip, though it is not normal for dogs. Hugs to you & your family, & here's hoping the healing vibes of DOL will pull Jess through.
  3. Yep that is what I thought too... They come into the area via another means - but I thought it was scary that there had been 4 cases of late at the local vets. Not so scary when you see the procession of cars going down the coast!
  4. Sorry, I am slow to type. Yes, we do get bush ticks in Bungendore from time to time. They hitch a ride on roos, wombats & cattle. Sounds like this little guy has one, although I would expect it to be fully engorged & dropped off given the amount of time he has been impounded.
  5. Paralysis ticks in the Queanbeyan area would be imported from the coast - highly unlikely it would be a paralysis tick given he has been impounded for three weeks. Where is the tick located on the dog? Are you sure it is a tick - can you see its legs waving around, or could it be some kind of growth If it is a tick you can lever it off with a pair of scissors, pop it into a small container with some metho & keep it for identification at the vet if you are worried. There is some useful tick info including identification on this page.
  6. Hehehe, the Kelpies sure know how to worm their way into your heart - I reckon every family should have one Seriously, thank you for saving Gus, there have been a few who haven't made it recently.
  7. And in people too, Mrs RB! If you take fish oil or administer fish oil to your dogs, you should be taking Vitamin E too.
  8. I thoroughly recommend the thunder shirt. Not just for storms but for any occasion where a dog may be stressed. I read on another list I am on, that the thundershirt stopped a stud male from pacing & fretting about in season females! At $60 that is very reasonable & worth giving a go.
  9. Yes, sorry Donski to be brutally frank in my reply, but thought it best to be honest. Hugs to you, & as persephone says, she may still be out there waiting to get back home.
  10. Oh donski, I am so sorry. Wombats use the cartilage plates on their back to crush invaders against the sides of their wombat holes. A friend's GSD x was lucky to get out of a wombat hole alive, but your little girl is so much smaller
  11. Dogtainers are franchises, so I would imagine you would have to address your complaint to the Adelaide franchisee. The Canberra franchise is great, they've won MDBA awards for their service. Have to agree with persephone that you will get better satisfaction approaching the franchisee with a well-structured & calmly presented complaint rather than firing up on a public forum first.
  12. I agree with camping out there & leaving personal items. I have had a dog run off on a couple of occasions, it can take them two or three hours to find their way back to you. Touch wood I have never come home without one, though the time waiting passes painfully slowly. A few years ago one of our dogs took off after a pig from the Shoalhaven river where we were swimming. I was distraught as the area was mined in the Chinese gold rush & there are a lot of mine shafts out there . We waited for what seemed an eternity, probably two hours, & it was starting to get dark. OH had packed up the ute & was about to drive home (over an hour) to get the camping trailer, when the missing dog limped out of the bushes. Her pads were ripped to shreds & I think she got back to us on pure adrenalin! Hope you find your little guy quickly, I am not familiar with the area, so feel helpless to advise on postering & soforth
  13. Oh Cathy, Mack will know how much he is missed. A measure of a life, is the intensity of love shared with others & not the brevity of the time he was with you. He was a special dog & that love will stay with you forever.
  14. Have you tried Dogtainers in Canberra, they are very accommodating with rescues / rehomes? The number is 02 6254 9955. Forgot to ask in my other response, what size dog are we talking about?
  15. Terhune is one of my favourite authors too! A taste of, & background to, "Lad: A Dog" on Wiki.
  16. I agree with persephone.... you are what you eat - goes for our dogs too! An appropriate diet & exercise is what promotes a healthy coat / skin, not cosmetic products & shampoos. Not sure if you already feed BARF, but have a look at Vets All Natural Skin Sensitive Mix. I am not in any way affiliated with the company, but have heard very good reports about this product. Dr.Symes Vets All Natural webiste is here If you feel washing is necessary, then a mild shampoo would be best followed by a rinse of cider vinegar in water (2-3 tablespoons per litre & do not rinse off). The cider vinegar helps to normalise the pH of the skin.
  17. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this article yet, this is the one I am most familiar with & recommend Early Spay / Neuter Considerations for the Canine Athlete by Chris Zink This is also worth a read too Agility Ability Growth Plates
  18. I read your thread in the Breeders Community, but alas I am unable to post there. Yours & Patches story really touched my heart. As a breeder of horses, I can empathise with the excitement of impending birth..... & then to have all your hopes & dreams taken away from you A beautiful tribute to your little boy..... so sorry for your loss.
  19. There have been several threads on lupus over the years. I did a search of this forum for you & found these topics listed here ETA Sorry the link does not work however if you type lupus into the search box at the top right of this page the topics will come up...... hopefully
  20. I thought I would post this notification as I know how frequently this topic comes up on DOL! Tomorrow morning Heike Hahner is going to be chatting to Dr Ian Billinghurst as part of her segment on radio 2CC. One of the questions is going to be about coprophagia. I am not sure exactly what time Heike comes on, but believe it is between 9.00 & 9.30am. Maybe tune in from 9.00am if you are in the Canberra / Southern Tablelands area, can receive 2CC (1206 on the AM band) & would like to listen or contribute to the talk-back?
  21. Dogtainers, Canberra franchise, have always given me great deals for rescues. You don't have to be flying in or out of Canberra to use them, they will book transport to & from any destination. I always make initial contact by phone & follow up via e-mail to confirm the quote.
  22. I wasn't sure what to make of this pic Looks like doggie is being attacked by the vampire kitty
  23. Because a hunting dog that hasn't been socialised with kids might react differently to a family pet. Two dogs were involved in the attack... something triggered it. If it was prey drive then perhaps a hunting background might explain it. Most breeds of dogs will work in pairs. For instance, in rural areas it is quite common for people to have a pair of foxies or terriers as house or yard dogs; one will go for the front end of a snake while the other will take a chunk out of its back end while it is distracted, then when the snake turns, the front dog goes in for the kill. This behaviour is not limited to terriers, I have also witnessed it in Chi crosses. The little pair were reported to have killed 10 or more snakes before the rearguard received a fatal hit.
  24. For Jarvis & others who are interested in learning more about dog body language & signs of fearfulness check out Dr Sophia Yin on the net. For kids & families she does a poster & tear off hand-outs showing how to recognize signs of fear & anxiety in dogs. Have a look here for a free download
