Agility Training Talk Thread
RubyStar replied to Vickie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
No. You can only enter one level of jumping. And ANKC does not have NFC runs. If you plan on running a different course than that listed (I did for a while to fix a running off issue) you can explain what you are doing to the judge. But you are not allowed to do a NFC run with rewards. WA has NFC runs for ANKC agility, but you must already have your title in the class you want to do NFC in. (Obedience, however, you don't need the title first ) -
Just curious as to what command you give? Do you have different commands for fetching dumbell/gloves/blind retrieves?

Agility Training Talk Thread
RubyStar replied to Vickie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi guys, quick question with hopefully a quick answer. For ANKC agility - if I am running a dog in say JDX, can the same dog enter JD but Not For Comp, in the same trial? -
Well Ruby was a tad limpy this morning, but it's not as bad so I am still hopeful Yep, Ruby and I can help you with the sit stay thing. May I enlist some help with Ruby's SFE please? May as well use tonight to get on top of these sorts of things

I am away from DOL for a weekend and get back to lots of posts! Love it when the thread keeps rolling :D Distracts me from things I need to do but don't want to, when there are posts to catch up on! Congrats on your newest family member, emery! Looking forward to seeing you and Chance in the obedience ring at some stage Bugger about Mason with the fairies on Saturday, Candice I know what that is like! Welcome stordimento!! Gorgeous dogs! Speaking of photos, great shots, CC!! Sorry to hear about Wandy's toe, LR Little buggers always hurting themself! And I hope you're feeling better!! Millie hurt herself on Thursday night during agility training, she was weaving and pulled out midway in pain, screeching and holding her paw up. Right after I had just asked her to not break on me because I can't handle 2 broken dogs  I suspect she got her foot or claw caught in the pegs that hold the weave bases together After icing it, she was walking on it again and has been fine all weekend. But I decided to still pull her from today's agility trial because I want to give it a chance to completely heal, and not make it hurt again. Squeezing her paw she showed a bit of discomfort opposed to squeezing the other one, so I think the decision to scratch her was a wise one. Shame really, the novice agility course looked really nice and flowing and all we need is one more pass for her AD title!! Some great news with Ruby, I can barely see a limp now! She is on anti-inflammatories/pain relief medication so it could be masking it, but I am hopeful that after 10 days of medication it will come good and stay good. I'll be taking her back to training tomorrow night, but giving her light duties Bahluddy heck it's gotten cold all of a sudden! I was trying to hold out til official Winter to put the heater and electric blanket on, but I caved tonight. The dogs looked cold ;) So they are both snuggled up in front of the heater, and haven't heard a peep out of them in a few hours now

Oh no mirawee!! Hope Kinta comes good. Sounds awful for her, bless her I'm currently building a new website for the Lab Club of WA. I really enjoy making websites, and don't get the opportunity to do so at work. Anyone in the market for one? :D I need a few for a portfolio. Speaking of making sites, I really need to come up with a business name. The one I started using years ago, well I'm not too sure if I want to keep it or not. And as I'd love to pick up more dog related sites, I'm thinking maybe of coming up with a dog related business name for web design/development. Can all you creative folk please put your thinking caps on for me!!? :D

give me dogs over kids any day I was surprised to hear about the job so soon, they said they had interviewed a few already, and had some more interviews lined up, but they thought I would fit in well so offered it to me straight away Yes it's in IT, the pet photography dream will have to wait a while.....but I'll continue to practice and now I'll have money for loads of new camera gear It's in Subiaco, but will be moving to Shenton Park at the end of the year, which will be even closer to me in Cottesloe :D Congrats CC!! What specifically in IT will you be doing? We need to get that pet photography/website business happening ;) I'm a programmer but I much prefer playing with the front end of building websites, not coding the backend of them!!!

I just saw the news report about the mini tornado in Canning Vale! I woke up at 8am when it apparently happened and was about to put the dogs out for a wee when it started bucketing down. I'm not far from CV. Hope the damage isn't too severe Ptolomy and PF! I'm happy to be home again out of the weather, the roads were not fun to be on this morning. The wind has picked up here now, random banging noises all over the place!

Straight and to the point, and good to Ruby I wasn't too scared!

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. Back from vet. He isn't too concerned that it is anything more than swelling in her elbow joint, so didn't want to do x-rays just yet. Says her limp is on the lower end of the scale and it's only intermittent (every 4th or 5th step, not every step). She's on anti-inflammatory medication for 10 days and see from there. Doesn't think her exercise should be restricted, but I will still be conservative about it (ie. don't want her jumping or running around like a loon like she is dying to do!) If lameness persists after a couple of weeks, to let him know and probably x-ray then.

Retrieving & Field Training Talk
RubyStar replied to RubyStar's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Sounds like a video that I will have to hunt down, too! Well Ruby is out of action for a little while. She's come up lame after lunging for a treat on the ground  so we're off to the vet today to have an x-ray after initial treatment and rest hasn't worked. Did some retrieving training with Millie last night while I kept Ruby home to rest. Gosh I just LOVE Millie's enthusiasm!! We first did some agility training and she was absolutely FERAL, running her own course and being a loon. Gave her a time out, then walked her away to throw some dummies. She's just getting better and better :D I've been working on sighted blinds with her, and placing 4 dummies in a line spaced a fair distance apart, with the last dummy quite a distance away. Was able to send her to all of them, and was still keen as anything for the last one and went straight to it. Still working with white dummies for this, don't want to throw her off too soon with her not being able to spot it until she's on top of it with say an orange dummy?? Though I do have some orange ones on order She's also now understanding the whole sit and wait while I throw 3 dummies in different directions, then sending for one at a time. And her sit to whistle is coming along! Still can't do it too far away from me yet, but we're slowly building up distance Just having an absolute ball with her!! Hurry up RATG!!! -
Thanks, everyone I will let you all know when I know

Maybe both are applicable Will go clear them now. Hang on.

Well, they're not as obliging as I'd hope They refuse to supervise her toilet breaks on lead, so the compromise was put her out the smaller side down the side of the house by herself, and make sure she doesn't run to the door or does her usual excited Tigger bounces when released from the crate And it took lots of nagging to get through to Dad the importance of her being crated. He wasn't getting it, but now he does

Welcome Bromaco - look forward to seeing pics. becoming a breeder is a long process of research and learning and getting it right from the beginning. Probably best place to start would be the breeder whos waiting list you are on. Tell them that you are interested in breeding so that they can give you advice on the right way to go about it. Being a registered breeder is more than getting shire approval. You have to get the right bitch, and then find the right dog. You have to be sure the bitch you have is good enough to breed from, and meets the breed standard. The bitch you have should be registered and on main register papers, otherwise you are not able to register the puppies produced (and usually a puppy on limit means not for showing or breeding purposes). You need to be a member of DogsWEst, you need to take the breeders exam and get a prefix so that you can register your puppies... you'll need to do the applicable health tests for your bitch (i think hip and elbow scoring? is there any others? PRA?). If she passes those, then you need to go about finding the right stud dog, and that means researching lines, different kennels, and studying conformation of several dogs to ensure that the pairing suits the bitch, and will produce sound, healthy puppies that look like labradors and meet the standard. Then of course there is the mating, the care of the bitch while pregnant, then the whelping itself, which can be difficult if you do not know what you are doing, so research there with many many books and web searches is the way to go. Raising the litter is tiring but fun... but you also have to be prepared for the heartbreak of losing them, because it can and does happen... and then of course there is the challenge of finding the right homes for the puppies so that they don't end up being breeding machines in someones backyard, because they think it'll make them a quick buck. breeding is a very rewarding, but tough, tiring and stressful - oh, and Expensive.. And how do I know this? I have just bred my first litter after countless years of research and proving myself in the showring and to breeders. They are 9 days old today and are the most amazing little creatures to watch. I have had several mentors throughout the whole process, and am lucky enough to have assisted whelpings in order to learn what needs to be done from an experienced breeder. Sorry that turned out longer than it meant to!! That was very well said, ST! Very informative :D

Sorry OSS, the appt is Friday I will check in tomorrow when I know (and before no doubt, a nervous wreck like ness was!) Reports from Dad this morning were she has been quiet in her crate all morning then when he took her out for a wee she wanted to sunbake so he left her out there in the smaller part of the yard by herself. Then he went to work, Mum came home from work and took over 2nd shift and she was fine in her crate, but will be let out into the loungeroom with her bed with mum for the afternoon. So she is being well looked after I'll be taking Millie to training tonight and leaving Ruby home, poor Millie has been suffering lack of exercise too due to keeping Ruby quiet and me being sick at the start of the week.

And why would a "problem" dog be rehomed to someone else for them to deal with at the ranger's hands. Not one bit of this makes sense.
-
Thanks, Tassie. I'm not too concerned about the sedation/GA, I know she'll be fine as she's had a GA twice before, it's more the worry of what the diagnosis will be! I'm praying she won't need surgery. Yes I am getting ahead of myself, but if it is a fracture, I read that sometimes it requires surgery depending on the type of fracture and how severe. I'm hoping there is no fracture, and she just needs more rest

Sue Hogben Seminar - Albury
RubyStar replied to The Spotted Devil's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think at previous seminars, you are allowed to film your own dog, but that is it. Best to ask -
That's ok, I'm sure I will be fine. I was the same though when I broke my own toe years ago. I had my mum in the waiting room and when the doctor told me I may need surgery on it cos the bone was crushed I started crying and asked if I could go and get my mum I've bawled at many vet appointments, too. I am going to make such a terrible mother one day Thanks. I'll try, but it's very hard to take things in and know what to ask! 10.10am. You guys have made me a bit scared now but I am still glad I am booked with him, I want answers!! She is fine inside, and pretty ok on grass, but walk her on the pavement out the back and she does some major head bobbing as she walks.

Thanks OSS I'm the type of person who gets so emotional that I can't even take in what is being said. I walk out going ummm so what did they tell me? I think I need to take a tape recorder with me so I can listen to it back!
-
Oh no Is anyone free on Friday and wants to come and hold my hand? I started getting teary on the phone to the receptionist tonight, and am likely to cry at the vet surgery! Can't even take my mummy with me, she'll be at work!
