  1. So your boss brings the puppy into work? I'm just wondering because they don't like to let full time workers puppy raise from what I've read! They appear to be in desperate need of puppy raisers but quite a lot of people are taken out of the running due to other circumstances. Which is fair enough, but I'd like the allowances to arrange things to make it work
  2. I cant do it, I know i wont be able to give it back Yes it would be very hard, but I would have to look past that (and then seek comfort )
  3. Great tips, FHRP!! I had a naughty Lab puppy (no, really!! ) and she would pick up anything and everything. If only I knew to encourage it back then instead of having my blood pressure rise with chasing her around for it and not winning
  4. Not a question, but just wanted to share my progress I did a bit in the backyard on Sunday afternoon and this morning before work. Ruby was an eager little beaver and retrieved her dummy (with 2 pigeon wings attached each side) with speed, enthusiasm, and delivered sitting in front with no mouthing She isn't usually in the habit of fetching and then nicking off, but she tends to run out with confidence, picks it up, then loses her confidence on the way back to me and looks like she is worried she won't deliver correctly. So I have laid off the pressure and try to be very upbeat, which is showing in her confidence in her delivery I hope I can translate this to more exciting areas than our backyard I'm also not making them all formal, I am incorporating some "fun" throws where I encourage her to run back to me but not asking for formal delivery. I hope I'm on the right track! I did some shaping of holding the dummy (without pigeon wings) with Millie also (who has done very little retrieving), and she was taking to it. Even with her favourite toy nearby, the squeaky ball, she made the choice herself to sit with me and do some holds of the dummy (yes, my "retrieving" dogs play with squeaky balls and tug toys, but if was to get another gundog pup, I probably wouldn't do it... )
  5. I'd most definitely puppy raise if they allowed full time workers to (and if my work allowed me to bring pup in!)
  6. Cert III in Companion Animal Services (I'm doing the same one part time)
  7. OMG at cockroach story!!! Congrats, Rach!! I've only completed 2 modules out of the same course, it's gonna take me a lot longer than 1 year to get through it all with working fulltime Best of luck job hunting!!
  8. Sounds like you're making a good recovery Hope you remain in good health Now that is dedication to your sport!! Good for you I'm not sure who GT is
  9. I dont think that we will be allowed, I may chicken out as I have such bad eyesight that I can only see the sign once I get to it and it makes me look like a 'spesheel' case Ososwift - congrats to you on your trial win If it's like an obedience mock trial, you are allowed to take food in. I don't think I will, as we're allowed to talk as much as we like to the dog in Rally so that's enough reinforcement for my girls until they get out of the ring
  10. Way to go! I am doing this with Millie, admittedly only a couple of times per week so not enough for her to get anywhere fast... she is up to 4 poles but still at angles. Her entries are nowhere near ready to close those poles any more just yet. Her sister may be "blonde", but picked it up far quicker than this brunette is
  11. Can Bear please teach Ruby to leave poo? It's a delicacy as far as she's concerned
  12. Well done on all the brags, sounds like a very successful weekend for trialling Congrats on the CCD title SmoothieGirl and Bronte! And to smisch and (Denver or Jock?) for your ADX Well done JulesP on overcoming your nerves long enough to not only enter a trial but get a pass!
  13. Interesting! So were you over here or someone else was handling for you? I didn't make it to the WA State trial this year as I had obedience on that weekend But I went along to several trials this year to watch and help out. Had an absolute blast when I went away for a long weekend of retrieving trials with Ruby, we camped out in my car :p Ruby just came along for a bit of practice and for the company. I learnt a lot by helping out both days. Being gun steward was daunting at first, but by the end it was great fun. I'm hoping to make it to more trials next year to help out (as I don't think trialling will be on the cards this next season ). Also can't believe you went to the States for their competitions, that is great
  14. Woohoo way to go TSD and Ziggy!!!! Those titles look lovely against his name :)
  15. No problems And what a gorgeous puppy! I'm guilty of spending my Saturday afternoon browsing the net on everything I can find related to retrieving Just talking with others on the topic has brought my motivation right back Hope this thread helps others with their motivation, too I'm off to watch some agility tonight, though not entered. Our jumping debut is next weekend ;)
  16. So how many here are actually trialling in Retrieving? I'd like to get a feel for who I should be to ;) What's the highest retrieving title your dog has achieved so far? I'd just be over the moon if I could ever get Ruby a QND, and now I'd also be majorly happy with one of the new test titles Just knowing my dog was capable of doing the work to get one would be great.
  17. Great photos!!! I'd like to get some of my girls in action but there is never anyone around! It shouldn't get railroaded in here being it's a thread specifically for retrieving. If people don't want to see it then they don't have to come in here Thanks, yes I've spoken to her quite often and bought all my dummies off her. I believe she did have some dokken's but not anymore Not sure she stocks books and DVD's so I will seek those out myself Won't be seeing her again until next year so I'm hoping to organise some extra gear in the meantime!
  18. Yes, more photos please people! Thanks for posting yours. I don't have any photos of my girl "in action", but would love to see some others
  19. RallyValley - maybe we could mull over a couple of sites to purchase some things and combine our order to reduce postage? ;) I'd like a dokken thingy (), a couple of whistles and maybe a book or DVD. In regards to the tug thing, as I never had any intention to do retrieving with my Lab when she was a pup, we started tugging, so any damage we've done to a soft mouth has well and truly been done by now. She enjoys tugging so I am using it for obedience work on occasion, so I guess I need to teach soft mouth with some shaping exercises - I'm sure the dogs are smart enough to see the different between a tuggy toy and a dummy or game. My girl is almost 4 years old now so a bit later than normal to be starting on retrieving, but I am using her as my learning dog and maybe if we have a good time at it I might get the bug and get another Gundog (though I do have my heart set on something that isn't a gundog next :D) I would like to get started on the whistle training and intend on using the whistle in the RA tests, too. No point in not, makes the test feel closer to the real thing for me I guess :D
  20. You can bet your ass I'd be quick to remove my dog from the ring and give her a piece of my mind and I've never shown a dog before! The sad thing is the owner/handler didn't look in the least bit concerned at what the judge was doing, like it was the norm How is that checking for conformation! Far out!!!!
  21. OMG I was completely horrified watching that! :D What in the heck was she trying to achieve? That has really disturbed me :D
  22. Ah ok I see so in the training they learn to face you anyway, so no need to teach it separately. You can see I haven't started training this I can see how that works now as Ruby automatically turns to face me in the box and I never taught her to do that as a separate exercise I don't even want to think about directional cues at this stage, it may make my head hurt! FHRP, can I come and train with you
