  1. Apart from any other consideration, like her health!, IMO you should be teaching Lizzy that jumping up at people and snatching food really isn't on... what happens when she sees kids on the streets eating? As for stealing off benches - well you can stop that behaviour *most of the time*, and if you have a dog which will get very sick when they eat things they shouldn't, why wouldn't you do some training  The biscuit and freddo was when she was a puppy, she did not suffer from pancreatitis then. I was just saying with her condition it frustrates me how she still will try anything to find food, even though if she was to eat it she would get very ill. She is only a small dog and is never aloud outside where any kids are. Unless she is on a lead and i have a tight grip of her. I was walking her once in the park and she picked up spmething in her mouth. My partner and i held her down and opened her jaw and she had picked up a tiny teddy, we pulled it back out of her mouth My nieces know NOT to eat around her, same with the neighbours kids, i asked their parents to make sure they never throw food into our yard as it could kill her. btw she was put in puppy training. But we BOTH work very long hours and i have not had time to put her into anymore training.
  2. Just want to say sorry and i hope you sort out a great treatment plan for him!!! Miracles can happen!!!!!!! He is so precious.
  3. My Lizzy is constantly trying to take food off the kitchen Bench or if anything is dropped or food from our shopping bags. Unfortunately it is not that easy for us as she has EPI so any little thing she eats that is not in her strict diet will make her very sick. I just wish she would realise this! I have to lock her up when we eat dinner and i have to make sure dishes are rinsed off and benches wiped down and nothing on the floor b4 i can let her out again. Makes it hard with the o/h, as he will sit down in front of her and eat yummy food, she will jump at him and try to snatch it out of his hand..... which she has achieved success with this b4 with a chocolate freddo frog and another time a biscuit. I think he has finally realised now though how careful we have to be with her and food!!! One day we will have kids and this frightens me, how am i going to stop a baby from dropping food etc!!! i try not to think about that at the moment! She is an inside dog and i would never turn her into an outside dog she wouldn't cope for a day!
  4. My girl has EPI. My vet said the test is about 80% accurate. The only way to get more accurate is via biopsies. Lizzys came back as positive though. I was not told to starve her when hers was done so i'm unsure whether she ate or not b4 the test.
  5. does she have any pain in her tummy at all, if so i would be back at the vet and have her xrayed incase of a blockage. One of our Standards had a chicken neck stuck in her intestines, the first vet we saw sent her homr to see if she would get over it during the day as she had a little runny poo and vomited once, she would not eat though. Our girl was in surgery for 3 hours her bowel and intestines were all affected, she got through Ok and you would never know but we are very careful of chicken necks now. Also would not feed Tbones or shanks, they splinter too much. Brisket bones are the best or Lamb back bones, or big marrow bones The bones are raw. Chelsea's poo was ok last night, no poo today cos no/little food consumed. We went to the beach on the weekend, just to have a run. Not the first time we have been to there. What part of the animal's body are the brisket bones located? I gave Chelsea some big marrow bones and she had probem in chew, she is only a bichon frise. There is no pain in her tummy at all when the vet touched her. My girls suffers with chronic pancreatitias. When she was finally diagnosed with it the vet also felt her tummy and she didn't cringe or seem to be in pain. Yet she will stand there hunched up in pain and can't lay down and is unsettled. No testing is 100% accurate for pancreatitias. I hope you get the right diagnosis soon. Let us know how she goes..... poor darling!
  6. Trish I feed her the Digestive / low fat biscuits. They are 5% fat. Cost about $22 for a bag (smaller bag). I mainly feed her the low fat digestive tin food though which is only 1.8% fat. The tins cost about $2.60 for 375mls. I'm lucky she is only small though cause the bag of biscuits last ages. She goes through about 3-4 tins a week. Cheers Kris Thanks, I will try some of them for a change, you're lucky shes little, it costs $35 a week to feed Ebony the I/D diet....... Trish I sympathise for you. I really do. She has already cost me a couple of grand in vet bills, at least i have her feeding bills on my side!!

  8. This is very similar to the food routine I used with a Sheltie boy who had pancreatitis tendency, nearly all his life. Right into old age, 15 years. I found, from hard experience, how easily the pancreatitis could be triggered off. Once he was given a bone to chew....that led to a week in hospital at U of Q vet clinic. The vet told me that bones of all kinds, no matter how lean they are, can be' triggers'. She said to see why....just boil the leanest of bones & watch all the fat come to the top. So no bones of any kind for him....chicken or otherwise. Another mistake I made early on, was to think that a little bit of the leanest meat wouldn't hurt him. It did.....another few days in hospital. So when I got onto a 'safe' food routine like TD's described, I stuck to it. Reading your post put a smile on my face. To know that a dog can still go on to live a long life such as 15 years of age!!! I have had so much trouble with my little one and have been amazed at what can set her off. To the point sometimes i scratch my head and cannot work out what could have caused it She has been going ok now for about a month. The longest i have got her going well for is just over 3 months. I'm really hoping the last time is the end of her ever being crook again! I've even cut out kangaroo from her diet as i couldn't work out what set her off. Was either that or the low fat cottage cheese which i also stopped giving her. All i have her on now is Royal Canin diet, with boiled chicken and vegetables and sometimes rice. Does anyone know whether it would be better to give them brown rice or is this to much work for the body to process?
  9. My mums dog bites her own hind leg nails. Mum only has to clip the front ones. It is very strange she will sit there in front of you munching on them. Mum wishes she would start chewing the front ones too as it is mission to cut them she freaks out.
  10. Can you take your dog for walks in the morning to burn off the energy? That might help them settle down. What breed is your dog? I feed my dogs quite early in the morning. So they are still sleepy. Usually, after breakfast, they lie down on their beds for cuddles and go back to sleep. I wouldn't have time, as i work full time. I walk her in the afternoons. She is only a small breed dog mini foxie. But she suffers from EPI and i read that can cause bloat. Plus i have to put water in every meal as she doesn't like to drink on her own, or if she ever does she doesn't drink much... the little bugger! I also never knew u shouldn't feed a dog b4 or after exercise. I have learnt alot today
  11. I'm going to worry everyday when i leave my girl for work in the mornings. I feed her breaky every morning and she goes or nuts and crazy afterwards it is impossible to get her to calm down. She is left on her own for 8 hours or more of the day so if she was to get this no one would be home to get her to the vet. I had never heard of this until i started reading these posts.
  12. Glad to hear she is going well. This is really scary i have never ever heard of this b4. What are the symptons to look out for and how do u know?
  13. Hi All Was wondering if anyones knows the max amount of fat in Dentabones or how i can possibly find out? The packets all say min 1%. I need to know the maximum amount though.
  14. Let us know what the vet says. I know if a dog has kidney problems they drink a lot as well.
  15. Yep - that's the enemy - she will always have build up if she stays on canned food. Any reason she can't have bones? Many people won't give pugs bones - you ought to see what my 21 mth old pug - Lizzy is capable of eating. Because fat / marrow with give her an attack of pancreatitias straight away and then she will be sick for two weeks. My mum has got hold of a Brisket Bone that apparantly has No marrow and the butcher is going to trim the fat, do u know if digesting the actual bone would harm her pancreas? No - can't say I am of any help once diet issues are there, I have been very lucky in the past and have never had any pets that don't tollerate what mother nature intended - regardless of the animals. I grew up on a farm and never even knew of the majority of health issues that I see these days. Hopefully someone who does will answer this for you. TELL ME ABOUT IT!!! She was a perfectly healthy little dog and i had never known a dog to have health issues until she was fed a certain Chicken Treat from China. Now she has alot of health issues. Makes me so mad!!!! We had heaps of dogs as kids and none never seemed to have any problems arise.

  17. She is on low fat tin food though. It is only 1.8% fat because of her pancreatitias. Ok will def ask the vet about that. Does it come in a spray bottle at all?
  18. I think Lizzy's is from the tin food i have to feed her.
  19. I think it is 22.95 USD plus postage. A friend of mine was also interested as she has cats and dogs. I was thinking the spray as i do brush her teeth everyday but makes no difference as they are already stained yellow. We were going to order it together and spilt the postage cost. My girl suffers from Pancreastitias so she cannot eat bones / dental treats etc. I really need to get her teeth clean but i'm not keen on the whole vet visit cleaning idea.
  20. http://www.cactuscanyon.com/dog-teethcleaning.htm I was thinking of buying this for my dog and trying it. I really don't want her to be knocked out and to go through that stress. I would like to know what people think. I'm not usually ones for trying products i have never heard off before.
  21. i'm affraid i couldn't even risk her with trimmed ones. She had an attack two weeks ago and i have no idea what sparked it besides a visit to the vet. I was giving her a little low fat cottage cheese and natural yoghurt.... they have since been cut from her diet. It sucks everything says and overweight dog etc having problems. She is only a skinny-normal weight little thing and always has been!
  22. looks like i shouldn't even be giving her the mint flavoured teeth cleaning treat then!! this sucks there is nothing i can give her!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you referring to the putting the dog up for rent??? that is terrible! poor pooch
  23. I'm looking for suggestions on how to clean my girls teeth. She has Pancreatitias so she cannot have bones, treats etc. I brush her teeth every night with a kids soft toothbrush and dog paste. But they are still filthy doesn't seem to do anything. I don't want to take her to the vet and have her knocked out to clean them as the last time i took her for follow up blood tests she got sick again and i'm unsure if it was the vet visit that set her off again. I have seen a few dog teeth cleaning treats around that say min 1% fat. The vet told me to stay clear because you don't know what the max fat content is and there is no law on it. I have a mint toy i give her to play with and chew on, also doesn't seem to do much. It is meant to be good for their teeth as well.
  24. Zantac is a really old very well studied anti histamine (H2) that's pretty much free of side effects. It's so safe that 150mg doses were rescheduled from prescription to over the counter medicine about 10 years back. It's has a very simple action that is completely understood unlike many of these dangerous NSAID dog medications where it's hit or miss as to whether your dog could become severely ill. They don't really understand how these drugs work. There's a lot more to it than simply saying it inhibits Cox-2. It's mechanism of action is not understood, nor is the importance of Cox-2 in the blood to mammals. BUT everything is pretty much understood about Rantidine (Zantac). It can effect the absorption of other medications. But once again it's been used for dogs and humans for so long, there shouldnt' be any suprises. I"M on Zantac, and so is my Lab. Neither of us have problems with it. If you were to search for potential adverse reactions for this drug you'd find a tonne, just like every other medicine. They need to legally protect themselves. but in actual use, it's very well tolerated in dogs. If you prefer to use non medicines and it's effective than that's still what you should do, just letting you know zantac is a very safe medicine for humans and dogs. Thankyou much appreciated. Will keep trying her on what she is on and if it don't work this time i will give it a shot. The vet said her dosgage would be 1/4 tablet twice daily. So should be fine. :-) cheers
