  1. I believe it helps too if the dog can see out of the window (just like us humans - I get travel sick and know for a fact that it's always better if I can look out and see the horizon!) - would be worth a try, anyway
  2. This brought to mind a lovely piece I read years and years ago and which I still keep - because it reminded me of my dogs.....and now yours! It's a bit long...... The Welcome Author unknown Read it fast to yourself, and picture the scene… I hear it! I hear the car! HER car! And she’s coming this way! Oh, oh, I must run in and grab a gift! I must greet her with a gift! Oh, ‘BONK’ missed the step. No matter, I must hurry. Move over, doggy door! She’s coming, she’s coming! Gift, gift, where, what, oh, oh, oh, ah! A plastic bottle she drinks from, right here on top of the container they call trash! Oh, perfect. She’s coming, she’s coming! Oh, oh, oh…the door! I hear the door sound that sounds right before she comes in! Oh, it’s OPENING! SHE’S HOME! Oh, oh, ‘wiggle, wiggle, wiggle’ I cannot be still! You’re home! And look, look, I have this nice bottle! Oh, oh, you’re home, YOU’RE HOME! I have missed you so much, you’ve been gone hours, weeks, days, years! And so much has happened! A dog ran by and I chewed a tree and Pluto slept under the house and it rained a little! Oh, oh, oh! You’re home, you’re home! And you’re touching me! I can’t stand it, it’s so marvellous! Oh, and you’re speaking! “Murble, murble, good boy, murble, murble.” YES! Your happy voice. Oh, I’m about to burst! I’m so happy, happy, happy! Yes! I want to jump! I’m not supposed to jump, but oh, oh, just a little jump! “Off.” Darn. Oh, I cannot be still. I’ll roll over and wiggle on my back! Oh, yes! She’s rubbing me – my tummy, my head, my sides! Oh, oh, oh! Now what? Now where’s she going? Oh, oh, yes! Back to the room where we sleep at night! Great! It has the big pad we sleep on and ‘L-E-A-P’ I can get up here close to her. And here she comes! Oh, oh, oh! I can stand on my legs and put my paws around her neck and – uh oh! Can’t lick with this bottle in my mouth. But it’s my present to her! Oh, oh, what to do? And she’s rubbing me! But I want to lick her, oh, oh, I think I’m about to burst! “Off.” Oh, darn. Drop the bottle. Oh, YES! She’s coming back! She took off the pieces she puts on her eyes and I can stand and ‘lick, lick’ I love you, I love you, I love you, I love ‘lick, lick, lick’ you taste so good, sweet, I love that stuff you smear on your face every day. I love to lick it off, oh, oh, and you’re rubbing me again! My back, my head, my ears, oh, oh ‘lick, lick, lick’. “Murble, murble, good boy, murble, murble.” “Off.” Darn. I will lay here and watch her. Watch her peel her fur – it’s not very warm fur, I don’t think. How does she do that? And I will get that look on my face that always makes her come and rub me. The look where I roll my eyes up, and keep my head flat here and she will come…and she’s putting on her play skin! YES! We will play – sometime. I cannot be still. I am SO happy, happy, happy. Now she’s going in the room with the wonderful water bowl! I LOVE that water bowl – always cool, clean water! She’ll be out in just a minute, just a minute, just a…..yes, she’s coming! She’s here again. Oh, oh, oh…..now back to the room with the box that has pictures and sounds. Ah, I know what happens now. Yep, she’s laying down on the big pad there. Now she’ll sleep. But that’s okay. She’s HOME! SHE’S home. She’s home. And she smells tired. So I will lay beside her here and guard her and wait while she sleeps. And when she wakes up she won’t smell so tired. And we’ll play and play. S-i-g-h. I’ll just rest with her now, and smell her while she sleeps. And wasit again. For, the next thing that happens, and then, oh, oh, zzzzzzzzz….. :D :D
  3. Feel free to Google - its what I'm doing. Podengo - just love these little chaps! They come in Small, Medium and large. National dog of Portugal. Did I read somewhere they may be coming to Oz sometime soon? Not sure if I've uploaded pics, but I tried.....
  4. Well, you know, Staffies are very special! My hairdresser (a new one I hadn't been to before) and I were comparing notes on her new staffie pup and my daughter's old chap and what nice dogs they were, etc., etc. when we got on to the the subject of how they 'talk' alot of the time. She got very excited and told me that Staffies talk because they are the ONLY breed of dog that has tonsils - her pup's breeder told her so - so they're very special dogs indeed
  5. Here's where alot of clubs/people buy them..... http://www.adaa.com.au/shop/tunnels.htm
  6. One of my dogs (the one with the pointy ears ) gets bitten quite badly during the summer months. I've found that applying a good layer of Vaseline to the tips every day or two keeps them away....makes her ear tips look a bit manky, but that doesn't bother me, and she's alot happier!
  7. ability to beg I'm interested on taking Emmy to one of these May 9 has passed.. we are in August now I did say at the beginning of my message: The Afgan Hound Club of NSW organise lurecoursing during the winter months on a regular base (about monthly) at Erskine Park - here's the details of their May day, you would need to contact Susan to find out when the next one will be. :p ;)
  8. I don't know if you've tried the Yahoo Group, maybe you could contact Susan Cilia that way..... lurecoursingsydney you can subscribe at [email protected] hope this helps.....
  9. The Afgan Hound Club of NSW organise lurecoursing during the winter months on a regular base (about monthly) at Erskine Park - here's the details of their May day, you would need to contact Susan to find out when the next one will be. Lure Coursing Fun Day Sunday May 9th, 2010 Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affairs, Erskine Park Lure coursing is a performance event developed in the early 70's by sighthound fanciers who hunted jackrabbits in the open field, which risked the harm caused by barbed wire fencing. They invented lure coursing as a safer, more controlled sport for sighthounds that would recreate the physical requirements of open field coursing, allowing them to continue testing the functional abilities of their sighthounds. Lure coursing aims to preserve and develop the coursing skills inherent in the sighthounds and to demonstrate that they can perform the functions for which they were originally bred. The hounds chase plastic bags on a course laid out to simulate escaping game. The plastic bags are pulled around on a nylon string course, propelled by a hand controlled motor. Who – The day is being run buy the Afghan Hound Club of NSW and all people and all breeds are welcome! What – The cost will be $4 for the first run $3 subsequent runs. 10. All your tricks are lovely, it's good reading about what you're all teaching your dogs! Here's one I saw on David Letterman's show last year - very funny! One day I'll teach my Border Terrier to do it..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DalB-CvO7Qc
  11. +1 I just dont think theres been much publicity (not the word I was looking for, but if i think of it later i'll edit ) about it here. I dont know whether there has or not in the breeder circles, but I'd only heard about it last week or so. I'd love to get a puppy which had gone through this program. I'm not a breeder, but my bitch was leased to her breeder for a litter of pups which were born in my house, and I did this program with the pups. It was very easy and a nice way to interact with the babies each day and "get the feel of them" so to speak! So I have nothing to compare them with, but I do know that the whole litter were wonderfully confident, adventurous pups, and if I ever had another litter one day I would definitely do the same thing.
  12. Please think carefully about giving your dog bones of any kind when you're not there to keep an eye on things - please, please, please! Especially with things like chook necks/wings, they can get into trouble so quickly (I know, I speak from experience) and if you're not there to help........ ;)
  13. To be honest I found that a bit distressing to watch.....what if there isn't someone there to help? Is it a French Bulldog thing?
  14. What about sporting competitions? Would it apply to pregnant agility bitches too? Is this an ANKC ruling or just Dogs Vic? Questions, questions......
  15. Perhaps suggest to them they should go to a few dog shows and see what takes their fancy, looks-wise, then investigate more on those particular breeds?
  16. Lovely stories! My cattledog/kelpie cross Emily guards me from a giraffe :p There's a big garden centre on the road in to my local town of Mittagong and they have a huge (life-size I reckon) giraffe tucked in the trees in full sight of the road - every time we go past it Em sits up and growls menacingly at it, just in case it has the nerve to try and jump into the car! They also have some life-sized sheep statues, and a spotted pig which they put outside on the edge of the road as a bit of a joke, too - she doesn't like them either, so they all get a bit of a verbal spray from her on the way past! She's a good girl, my Em - I always feel very safe with her in the car
  17. That's lovely - well done! Dogs NSW have always had a neuter class at their Christmas show up until a year or two ago, when they stopped it, who knows why..... I won Neuter BIS at the Christmas Show once with my Border Terrier bitch back in 2005 which was a great thrill for me, but without putting too much of a downer on it, the show committee omitted to have any prizes or sponsors product or anything for the neuter winner, either in Group or in Show....they rather sheepishly put together a cardboard box with some shampoo and a bottle of wine (left over from the judges' dinner??!) in there when it was obvious what had happened after they'd handed out all the In Show awards, but quite honestly it was badly organised. The following year my same bitch won Neuter in Group again and when they couldn't come up with anything in the way of prizes AGAIN for the second year in a row, I gave up and went home Funnily enough I was called a "trophy hunter" when I complained about it on another list but if you're going to include the class then for heaven's sake do it right! It wasn't a question of prizes, but one of acknowledgement in the way that every other prize-winning dog on the grounds that night was acknowledged! I'd paid my entry fees just like anyone else, and went home feeling slightly annoyed about the whole thing! Luckily Lexi couldn't give a damn, she just enjoyed her evening's showing *edited to get the facts right!
  18. Tried the 500g pack - after coming to terms with the price! - dogs loved it, but honestly, it's the most un-natural 'natural' dog food I've seen!! Very hard to re-constitute, just seems to float on top of the water even when I used warm water. Smelt really lamby (not bad) - pack seemed to be mainly made up of powder with a few lumps thrown in. I probably wouldn't use it again (unless I won a bag like you, SpikesPuppy!), but can see how handy it would be when travelling if nothing else. Much prefer to toss the terriers a chicken wing or a lamb neck each!
  19. Yes - a couple more for the sporting types..... T Ch - Tracking Champion Ag Ch - Agility Champion
  20. Is it possible, pretty please, to know the entry numbers for each show - divided into groups?
  21. And there's a super little book (booklet, actually) called "Following Ghosts - Developing the Tracking Relationship" by Suzanne Clothier from the USA. She has her own website, but you can get it from Dogwise in the US: http://www.dogwise.com/ItemDetails.cfm?ID=dgt200 or Amazon.com Oh, what does it cover & what method does she recommend? Could you do us a quick summary/review? I just invested in a copy of "Tracking dog, theory and methods" by Glen Johnson from Amazon - probably not what my student loan was intended for, but it was just too tempting... Hi, here's the link to it on Clothier's website - it's explained there....actually, I lent my copy to someone and I can't think who at the moment, so can't dip into it for you, sorry! http://flyingdogpress.com/Merchant2/mercha...egory_Code=BKLT And while you're there, she has some other great stuff too.....

  23. Hi MavericksMission - great idea to start your pup off on a raw diet, but just mince meat is not adequate, especially for a growing pup. He should be getting bones as part of his diet as well, not just as treats! Chicken wings/necks are great - just supervise him eating at first. He can gradually work up to a variety of bones - lamb necks, shanks, beef bones, etc. I work on a ratio of 60% meat to 40% bone. He should also get some liver every now and then, raw and added to his meals. Raw minced veggies are great, too - introduce him to fruit as well. And I would always go for the human grade mince/meat if you can - never quite sure what's in pet mince myself!! Supplements - if he's getting a good variety of meat and veggines he doesn't really need any, but that's a personal thing. Maybe a raw egg a couple of times a week, or some yoghurt would be fine. Good luck with it -
  24. I've got it - and two Border Terriers who do agility, earthdog etc. It's a fabulous book for all dog training, not just for flying pigs!!
  25. As I recall, Billinghurst feeds veggies/fruit/supplements etc. with his RMBs, and Lonsdale doesn't - just goes for the RMBs.
