  1. I am getting my kelpie bitch spayed in the near future. She is a awesome little worker and it really worries me that she might loose that. Your post is reasuring. She is 10 months old.
  2. My 9 month kelpie rounds up cars and especially large trucks and road signs. She developed the habit while on a road trip from Marlo to Makay. I stopped her (well most of the time) by holding her lead and growling at her when she did it. Now when she sees something coming towards us she hides from the temptation, then brings her head up slowly when she thinks is is safe. Typical working dog. She has plenty to keep her brain busy as she works on the farm, chases flys, we do a bit of agility in the back yard and shes got a 9 month old male kelpie as a companion. You may have to crate your dog as others have suggested. Good luck.
  3. h Hi there. Good luck selling your house. Maybe meet you once you get this way. The Kennels I found are called Keystone and are in Upper Maffra. Im going to have a look next week. I dont think they are big kennels, will let you know what they are like. Cheers Kaye
  4. GSD's IMHO are very loyal dogs to the person that deserves it and earns it. If you are the one that does the bulk of care eg feeding, training, fun stuff they will become very devoted. This may become a problem if it causes anxiety when seperated from you. I dont think we can interperate it as love but it means you are their pack leader with alot of responsibilities for their welfare. I once had a beautiful GSD bitch that the breeder, (a close friend) gave to me on condition that she could breed from her. She was 11months when I got her and was the most loyal dog Ive ever had. In the end I couldnt leave her in kennels or even with the breeder as she sat waiting for me and would hardly look at anybody else. This was very flattering but probably not that good for her. She wasnt a spoilt dog and always had time in a kennel and cage but as she got older it got harder for both of us. Poodlefan is probably right about the anxiety thing and I know you wernt asking for advice but here comes some......address the anxiety and make life easier for both of you.
  5. I found one recomended by my vet.
  6. Hi! Can anyone recomend a good boarding kennel around the Traralgon area. Thanks in advance. Kaye
  7. I hate clicker training too, also a personal thing. When Im teaching my girl something new and she gets it, a "yes" works well for us and Ive always got it with me, just like a pat. My dog is easy to train and wants to please me as I am fun to be with from a doggy point of view, I reckon anyway.
  8. Thats a very good point. I have just got ruff wear boots for my kelpie. I will only put them on when she is running round the farm I think, that is if and when she gets used to wearing them. Could be a while. Fun to watch though. She seems a bit embarrased :D
  9. Have just seen this thread - Graham is fantastic isn't he? A lovely "character". He looks after our greyhounds if they have troubles. Yep I thought he was great. Watched him check over a few greyhounds. All made good sense.
  10. Try Kate Haines at LaTrobe Veterinary Group. There are two clinics - one at Traralgon (180 Princes Street - 5174 5622) and the other at Morwell. She has treated my dogs and horses and those of friends with very good results. You can look up her profile on their website www.latrobevetgroup.com.au Takes me an hour to drive down there but she's worth it. Cheers! I found her in the phone book, but have booked with Graham Brown from Berrick. He comes to a property near me every second Sunday to treat greyhounds, Im giving him a look tommorrow. If it dosn't go well I will give Kate Haines a call.sounds like she is good. Thanks for your reply. Kaye Hope it goes well. Turns out that Ruby has tiny hole in one of her pads and has got something like glass or a thorn in it. He said she has ligament damage that will come right in time but whatever is in her pad is causing the lameness. Told me to soak it and try and draw it out. Only cost $10. Also said ask for my money back of vet. Ha Ha

  12. I agree. Nutro Rules. It is great for dogs with allergies, produces a nice shiny coat etc. I have just started feeding to my kelpie, but in NZ we used to feed it to our GSDs with great results. We also fed it to dogs in the kennels where I worked and it often made a difference to some of the dogs staying long term. A lot of our customers changed over to it. It may seem expensive but you dont have to feed a lot per day if you stick to the guidelines.

  14. Im am looking for a dog chiropractor in Central Gibbsland, around Trarlagon- Sale area. There are a lot of greyhounds here so there must be one somewhere.
  15. I will try and find a greyhound chiropracter. The last thing I want to do is have her toe amputated. I have tried taping her toes together but it just falls off after a bit. The tape dosnt worry her at all so maybe boots will help the tape stay on. She is one hell of a dog with so much potential. I would love to do agility with her but this toe is a real problem. Thanks for your reply. Kaye
  16. Ive been reading the thread on dog boots and wondered if boots would help my kelpie who has a sprung toe. She is very active and works the cows on farm. My vet said there's not a lot we can do with the toe except amputate it if it gets arthritis at a later date. She only limps when shes walking but Im sure that when shes running around it wont be helping things. She also limps more if she has had a rest and then gets up. Any suggestions welcome.
  17. Yeah awesome. Sent my OH to shop last night for a copy.
  18. Your girl looks very familar, whats her breeding? My girl Ruby is from Camila Allnuts line, Ballare. The girl I had before Ruby, Bo was from Oatland lines. I lost her to paralysis ticks despite vet treatment. She was chocolate and her coat was always shiny. I am going to get my hands on some Livamol and give that a go. I do think the sun has a fair bit to do with it and also she has recently had her first heat and is having a false pregnancy at the moment. Yes Kaye, Megs is fromBallare Katya, she is a callicoma pup and looks just like her mum...and oatland lines on her dads side Katya is a beautiful dog from what I can tell. I talked to Mandy when I was looking for a pup to replace Bo. Its a small world.

  20. I wouldnt leave my dog at kennels if I didnt trust the operators to tell me the truth. My experience working in a well run kennel was that most dogs settled in well. During the day we had closed hours between 11am-3pm. During this time the dogs who had all been excercised and fed were quiet and relaxed. The occasional dog that had seperation anxiety, owners were told. Its not a lot of fun looking after a dog that chews wires, disturbs other well adjusted dogs. Owners could do a lot to help their dogs to adjust to kenneling, eg right from the beginning crate the dog and give it time penned everyday so that when the time comes that it must go to kennels it will not be a big deal. Spoilt dogs are the hardest but often the distractions at kennels like seeing other dogs and routine overcomes any problems.
  21. I have worked in kennels and have left my dog or dogs in kennels. While working in kennels it was usually the owners that were the most stressed, once the owners had gone the dogs usually settle in well. Theres a lot for them to see and a well run kennel has a good regular routine. The kennel operators should notice if she is loosing weight etc but dont worry a dog will not starve itself to death. A dog sould be happy to go into kennels and happy to go home. I feel its a big responsibility to put onto friends and have heard of a few horror stories when friends have looked after dogs so I wouldnt do it. At least in kennels the dog is behind secure fences and cannot get run over etc. Do your homework and prehaps leave her at kennels for a couple of trail runs. Maybe get her used to not always sleeping with you and being penned for short periods of time. I left my girl in kennels for a month over Xmas for two years in a row. She was in the same condition that I left her and we just carried on where we left off. Make sure you leave acontact no etc, if the kennel is any good they will ask you for a number, her normal diet and any concerns you may have etc. Dont worry she will be fine and so will you
  22. Cheers, thanks for advice. Will try all suggestions. Kaye
