  1. To the OP, that looks like a blue merle with tan points to me. I've noticed in coolies, and sometimes working line bcs too, that the tan can be muddied and patchy compared to what most people are used to, giving you the look of that coolie pup in the photo. A normal merle only needs one copy of the gene that makes it merle, as merle is dominant. So call merle 'M' and not merle 'm'. If you mate a merle dog with a not merle dog, you will have pups in the litter that will be either Mm or mm, so either merle or not merle. If you mate two merle dogs (both are Mm) you have a chance of getting a litter with MM, Mm and mm. So, double merles, normal merles and not merles. It's when the merle gene doubles up (MM) that it causes problems. That means that not all pups resulting from a merle x merle mating will necessarily be affected (the Mm and mm pups), but there is a good chance some will be, which is why merle x merle matings are a bad idea. Double merles are generally characterised by being mostly white with very little merle and small eyes - sometimes affected pups are born with no eyes at all. Many have deafness and blindness issues. eta: wuffles has already explained it, whoops
  2. Gee, we could make a mint breeding and selling so called 'vegetarian dogs' to all of the hippies and new-age trendy people.
  3. Wow scary. I know there's not much the police can do in this situation, but it might be worth contacting them and making them aware of the incident.
  4. No, keeping Border Collies in active pet homes is not 'cruel'. No, a farm is not the only place where a Border can live a happy life.
  5. Does anyone know of any breed specific rescues in the Melbourne surrounds? Surely there would be a Poodle Rescue group where the dogs would be under $1000?
  6. I thought this was common practice in pounds. I adopted a cat that I found and gave to the local RSPCA as his eight days were up and he had, of course, caught cat flu. A very treatable illness that's common in pound facilities due to stress, but the facility was bursting at the seams and any animal that wasn't in optimal health was euth'd after its eight days was up. The thing that makes no sense was that a home was already lined up for the dog.. surely a lack of communication, but incredibly sad regardless.
  7. How absolutely disgusting. Shame, shame, shame on BCC. Such a confusing story and nothing adds up. I hope that something happens that blows these b******s out of the water.
  8. Kirislin that one is hilarious They didn't just throw it at him they wiped it all up his back! Love the shrieks of laughter as they run off.
  9. I am so, so sorry Owey. May little Bailey rest in peace.
  10. I've been stalking this thread with interest. I'm so sorry for all you've gone through Owey. I really hope that it isn't TNS and that little Bailey pulls through. Regarding the cost of a pup from a good ANKC breeder, as far as I know the cost should be $900 - $1000. $1200 sounds a little steep to me but I'm sure it's not unheard of, I certainly know that the colour breeders will charge upwards of $1800 for a 'rare' colour.
  11. 'american pit bull mastiff'. Sigh! Using all the right buzz words to get a rise out of the uneducated public.
  12. I just saw that on another site. Wtf is wrong with people, why would you even do that?? Seriously, the poor people get out of their car to help at an accident and that's what happens. I hope Tau is found safe, poor little thing.
  13. Wow, that site looks amazing! What exactly is spelt liquorice? Sorry to go OT!
  14. My old rescue Border was deathly scared of guitars when we first got him. It wasn't the sound, just the guitar itself. As soon as I picked it up he went scrambling down the hall and hid behind the bed. It took about six months, but we eventually desensitised him and he would happily sit next to me while I had the guitar in hand.
  15. I have seen male and female dogs poo mark. Really weird looking. Shove their bum up against the tree/surface and poop onto it.
  16. The 'crosses are healthier' debate only works in the wild, where natural selection comes in and deals with any unhealthy animals before they breed and thus naturally produces a healthier population. I'm not a fan of breeders who claim to breed 'giant dogs' with 'huge heads', just like I can't stand breeders who claim they breed 'teacup' dogs.
  17. That's the law in NSW and quite a few other states. I would be asking staff if they really want to promote an illegal activity and that the RSPCA recommends puppies stay with their mums until they're 8 weeks old - and do they really want a socially crippled immuno compromised puppy? It might be cheap now but in the long run, they can cost a lot more than if you got one that had been looked after properly. And I think I would be reporting the incident to the management of the aged care facility. Ie I'm sure they don't want to be associated with promoting illegal activity and puppy mills. And I'd probably chuck a hissy fit about risk of disease, fleas etc from the puppies to my dog. When I get really angry about something - I can get really loud. The usual one is PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG !!!! DITTO Yup, definitely complain! I'll bet the higher ups won't be happy at all with what happened. Not that it will change the fate of the pups and parents, but at least they may get a warning not to bring pups to palm off to people next time. And hey, you might also be able to educate the nurses about their new purchases (nicely) while you're at it.
  18. Whilst I agree with everyone's sentiments I don't think bashing someone over the head about it is the way to go, particularly as they haven't come back to further explain themselves. From experience it makes people defensive and less likely to listen. eta: When I was sixteen, I went onto a BC specific forum and asked about the process of breeding out of curiosity. I had always loved borders but wasn't really aware of the show ring or anything. I had always dreamt of becoming a breeder. What ensued was about 16 pages of accusations, name calling and just general nastiness. I was accused of being a BYB, even though I had no dogs at the time. It took me two years to work up the courage to go on another forum - that was DOL. I was ignorant back then but I'm not now. I have mentors in the breed and plan on showing as soon as I'm in a position to own a dog. Everyone has to start somewhere, and I think we, the 'initiated', take for granted the basic knowledge we have about how bad BYBing is and so on and so forth.
  19. Weims are lovely. :) Great to hear that you've heard back from some breeders. You sound like you've done your research so I'm sure you will be able to find a pup. There is a Weim thread, link here: http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/106104-weimaraners-short-and-long-haired/ If you need any more help looking for a breeder/pup, I'm sure you'll find help in there - for the price of posting pictures of your new puppy when it arrives, DOLers love cute puppy photos! eta the link.
  20. JaCaMa, what breed is it that you're looking for? DOL is home to many breed owners and breeders alike, someone may be able to recommend a breeder for you or point you in the right direction. Try not to be disheartened - it's disappointing, but it will all be worth it when you finally have your puppy. It just takes perseverance and it often helps if you know someone who could recommend you to the right breeder. eta: Don't limit your search to your area, particularly with an uncommon breed. People buy pups interstate regularly, it's just a matter of finding a good breeder that you trust.
