  1. That face I think that's one of the reasons my family really don't want one here permanently. I'm the dog person amongst them and they don't mind the two that visit but they aren't exactly bounding outside for cuddles either. Generally they are fine with anything on the smaller side and my mini dachie seems to have won them all over. So maybe one day I can have big dogs (Rottie and an Irish Wolfhound sounds like heaven to me, not sure if I'd fit on the couch between them though!) but for now I'm happy to stick to the shorter ones to keep the peace. Thanks for the breed suggestions, definitely a few to check out. Might have to find my way to a dog show to see some of them.
  2. That is seriously adorable! Might be why I'm enjoying my Dachie so much  Hadn't thought of the Frenchies, my boy is supposed to be having a play date with one on his first beach trip so it will be a good chance to meet one and see what he thinks of him. How do you all avoid living with a small pack of dogs? So many wonderful breeds out there and even when I narrow my choices down I think I could easily end out living with about 5 dogs at anyone time
  3. Wasn't us sadly... I'm not sure I could be trusted around that many Rotties at one time  Although I might have to check it out sometime, you can never have enough Rottie cuddles!
  4. Thanks mita, I'll have to find some Tibbies to meet :D I think you got it in one with the comment about a centred nature. The rotties I've met have that beautiful steadiness to them, they all seem like happy dogs and of course they have that wonderful doggy smile on their faces.
  5. Love the photos  I move Hansel's bedding to two different spots after he wakes up, at the end of the day I have to shake out all the toys, toilet roll pieces and left over food that he stores there during the day. His tennis balls also have legs. He rolls them off the veranda and his dog friends find them and hide them in various spots on the property.
  6. This is probably a strange one but I've become addicted to Rottweilers. Love everything about them, I love the look, I love the temperament, I love the personality and luckily I have two that visit a few times a week so I can get snuggles, of course this means my dachie pup has joined me in my rottie addiction. Tricky thing is they are just too big for my current lifestyle. So what smaller breeds share some of the wonderful qualities of the Rottweilers?
  7. I get stopped with Hansel quite a bit particularly by some of the older generation. A lot of them say they don't really see the dachshunds around anymore or their family once owned one. Thankfully they have all been very polite, they ask if they can have a pat and when I say yes they don't force themselves on Hansel. He used to be a bit shy with new people but he has worked out that new people often mean new pats
  8. That's what we get, plus the squeak and come in smaller sizes. Hansel has hidden supplies of them now and brings one out when he wants to play
  9. Too much cute!!!!!! Congrats!
  10. I've learned to be a very savvy shopper, you can save a lot of $$ when you buy in season produce and sales items. I also avoid a lot of precooked, highly processed stuff (for me and the dog!) which takes a lot of cost off. Sometimes it's knowing when to shop, I'm more likely to find cheap bags of produce if I shop on Sunday. I also do a lot of shopping at the weekly markets, plus some of the veggie stalls will give me free offcuts that are useless for people but great for my rabbits and birds. I'm looking forward to getting my own veggie patch going now!
  11. That it's the simple things that make life perfect. Disappointment lasts for a minute, fluffy blankets last forever.
  12. I have a dog, cats, birds, rabbits, alpacas and have had fish and cows but I could never be without at least one horse in my life.
  13. This is what I'm doing. I narrowed my list down to Whippets and Dachshunds, I even narrowed it down to a breeder from each. Then it was just about waiting for the right dog, I didn't mind which breed since the plan was to raise the first to a point and then get the other one. My dachie showed up first I think I was helped a long a lot by meeting as many of my potential breeds in person, it gave me a great feel to the energy and general presence of each breed.
  14. Thinking of you all I have friends in the area but they so far have remained safe.
  15. Mines Tassie salmon but thanks for the link :) Good to know!
  16. I wonder if different livers taste different. I picked up chicken liver cheap at the supermarket and he won't touch it but maybe he'll try lambs liver? I've been meaning to get some (haven't had lambs fry in ages!) so maybe I'll see if he feels differently about it. He eats better then me  He turned his nose up at canned salmon but when I got some fresh salmon he couldn't get enough of it. I'd actually been dreading the whole raw feeding thing but it's actually been interesting reading all the different thoughts on it and trying things out with Hansel. Jeeeeeez! I hardly buy raw salmon for us unless we're at the market and it's fresh enough to justify the cost! Can I come live with you? FWIW my two garbage guts dogs won't touch liver either. I justify it by sharing with him  Thankfully my butcher gets fish in fresh once a week because Hansel and I LOVE our salmon, I try and get a piece every other week. He usually has sardines or tuna when we don't have salmon.

  18. I'm having the same problem with the liver. Hansel eats around it no matter how much I cut it up or disguise it and then gives me a disgusted look. He feels the same about kidneys!
  19. I think I'm more individual loyal then breed loyal. Hansel is the greatest dog I have ever met for me ever, but I sort of think of that as a "Hansel" thing rather then a "Mini Dachshund" thing. Of course with that said I have ever intention of going back on his breeder's waiting list at some point in the future so maybe I am a bit breed loyal. My second dog will probably be a Whippet and there are plenty of other breeds on the "One Day" list!
  20. Thanks I think he misses his chicken necks (or maybe he misses the look of terror on my face?) so will definitely chase up the turkey necks. Who knew one little dog could take over so much freezer space
  21. Bulk turkey necks sound like a great idea, a friend has just gone raw with his dogs so we've been sharing ideas. Might see if we can track down and share some turkey necks between us as well.
  22. Might try the wings He also gets chicken feet that he eats on the front veranda which "amuses" visitors  he did love his necks but my heart can't take watching him when he decides to inhale instead of chew. He always looks so pleased with himself when he does it.
  23. Hi all, Bit of a raw feeding newbie but my pup was raised on it so I'm trying to stick with it. Currently fiddling around with his bone options, the big winner is chicken frames. We had to stop feeding chicken necks as he had a habit of trying to swallow them whole. I have been told to try turkey necks but haven't had any luck finding them yet. Have also been told to try lamb shanks but will they be to big for him? I pick up a bag of beef or lamb pet bones from my butcher weekly and I can request specific ones if they have them. What should I be asking for based on his size? Thanks!
  24. My family's first dogs were litter mate brothers that the 'breeder' suggested for that very reason. We had all the problems that this forum warns about for this situation and it was a really unpleasant start to dog ownership. I think a lot of people get talked into the idea especially when they aren't dog savvy.
