  1. Hansel likes to arrange his crate to his liking. He currently has three blankets (a small fleece, and 2 big fake minks) that he moves around, a soft tug toy and a tennis ball. He just brought his two favourite soft toys out but he often takes them to bed. There's also a small fleece over the top of it.
  2. Rural so plenty of Kelpies, Cattle Dog, BC and mixes of those. Then "Staffies" of all varieties, Jack Russels and crosses of. And then I see Whippets, IG, Borzoi, Saluki, Greyhounds... seems to be a lot of hound types or maybe I just look for them? Don't see many oodle types
  3. I'm not sure how anyone can defend walking off lead when it simply comes down to being illegal. Surely that should be all the reason needed to keep them on lead My pup has just had his final vaccinations and is reading to go exploring, all the areas I want to take him are on lead only parks and beaches and until this thread it never entered my mind that I'd have to potentially deal with people choosing to break the law. So a quick thanks to this thread for making me think about that, I think I'll do a few walks without my dog in those areas first to get a feel for what we might come across.
  4. I like the kind that is happy to cuddle but also happy to flop down for a snooze in the corner while you do something else. I find it a bit overwhelming when I'm at friend's places and they have dogs that need someone 100% of the time. My boy is probably a quiet snuggle, he likes to be around me but is happy to be nearby or in a cuddle, whichever! I also find him to be a very calm, cheerful sort of dog. He goes with the flow!
  5. If he isn't enjoying the carrot he might prefer apple? My pups favourite treat of choice is a slice of apple so I tend to split an apple between us quite often. Healthy treat for me as well
  6. "But why didn't you rescue one?" about my young dachie. Nothing against rescue at all but I wanted a dog from this particular breeder, raised in a particular enviroment and related to a particular dog... and I wasn't going to find that in a shelter!
  7. Some very good advice here already and I'm sorry for your loss of Tip. I'll add a plea to please, please do not use netting on your fence lines to trap them, this also endangers lizards and birds and gives them a long and terrified death. Nothing deserves that. Any caught snakes will also be very aggravated and far more dangerous if encountered. If you're on facebook look up "Snake Catcher Victoria Australia" he has a lot of good advice to share.
  8. Pepe001 sums it up pretty good. They're pushing the vaccine pretty hard at the horse community but haven't done the tests to guarantee safety for breeding animals (fertility and effects on unborn foals,) and longevity of the vaccine. Essentially they want us to pay through the nose to let our horses be the test subjects.
  9. "Maybe HE is the ball..."
  10. The majority of the time "mean" or "nasty" animals are made that way, but I do believe that on occasion, in fairly rare circumstances, you will find an animal who just isn't right. Even saw it when I was breeding rabbits! A friend who regularly produced the most smoochy, wonderful babies had one that from the start was trying to be the rabbit from Monty Python's Holy Grail. Perhaps there was an underlying condition that caused it, perhaps his brain was just wired wrong but he was pts as he had no place in this world.
  11. I find I have to be careful about coats, I'm not 'properly' allergic to dogs or cats but my existing allergies can get very irritated by loose hair. There are days where I struggle with my cat and when I visit a friend with a lab I usually feel like I've used a whole tissue box. This is why I will always meet the breeds I'm interested in, preferably in large numbers and for a long time
  12. Lots of frolicking whippets here.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.420127038015490.103485.172335819461281&type=3 Those are fantastic! Love this breed, my mother who describes herself as 100% not a dog person met some awhile ago. She now openly admits her utter love of whippets
  13. I like the idea of a template for the ads. I browse the puppy listings as part of my research into my next dog and I'll admit that some of the ads are really unhelpful from the perspective of the average puppy buyer. Ads that cover health testing, availability (number of pups and dates of when ready) and home suitability (showing, working, family pet, etc) and cost are much more helpful then an ad that just reads "puppies available, contact for more info."
  14. Beautiful photo of beautiful dogs! Happy B'day Trixie :)
  15. Another horse owner here so very used to the way our animals can, and will, dump using their brain and go into a complete freak out mode when rattled... and a lot of harm can come from that I hate the idea that because I breed horses, or my lovely neighbours who breed cows, are guilty until proven innocent because we chose a career the "public has interest in." It's my land, I'm breaking no laws, surely I have the right to my privacy? If someone has concerns they can take it up to the relevant authorities.
  16. I've been reading about Charlie since I first found DOL, he has been a character that crops up in a lot of stories and a lot of threads. He seems to have packed a lot into his short but apparently wonderful life with you guys. My thoughts are with you.
  17. I'm on the waiting list for a dachie so I'm pretty sure he coudld fend for himself but I think he'd let me starve!
  18. Here is a web page that Espinay provided in the poodle thread. http://www.one-dachs...althissues.html It talks about health issues of different coat patterns. Because the breed contains merle, and the white can hide the merle, there are extra concerns in that breed, as well as the normal concerns about the deformities that can accompany lack of pigment. Thanks for the link :) He will be prone to sun burn and possibly skin cancer from repeated burning. You can manage that with screens or U.V fly masks, which would also protect his eyes. The eyes too are prone to damage from the sun from their extreme lack of pigment. Hi, Grey and White horses, can also end up with Melanoma in later life, from repeated sunburn/exposure to extreme UV It's interesting how the majority of grey horses still have quite long and healthy lives in spite of this, I know one in particular who is approaching 30, still gets ridden and rarely wears any sun protection (he tends to kill rugs etc) he does have one growth and has had it for years without seeming to be adversely affected by it. They say over 75% of grey horses will have some form of melanoma but only some cases progress. Greys seem more likely to have them, but less likely to have malignant ones then horses of other colours. Some really interesting disscussions on the topic and I hope there's more science to come.
  19. Where does the no extreme white in Dachshunds rule come from? Also is there issue with the dilute colourings similar to the issues with dilute in the Staffords?
  20. Vile adjective, vil·er, vil·est. 1. wretchedly bad: a vile humor. 2. highly offensive, unpleasant, or objectionable: vile slander. 3. repulsive or disgusting, as to the senses or feelings: a vile odor. 4. morally debased, depraved, or despicable: vile deeds. 5. foul; filthy: vile language. Use of the word is correct.
