  1. I would be careful what breed you feed these pigs ears to. Some breeds, such as mini schnauzers cannot take too much fat in their diet and could start up a pancreatic attack.
  2. I Don't you don't what, watch or despise?
  3. I can't understand, if by the looks of it a lot of you out there despise him and the show so much, then why do you watch it?
  4. Schnauzers are known to be 'talkers' so I wouldn't worry. That's his way of expressing himself.
  5. I agree with your comment about the canned food. Yes, any amount of raw and fresh no matter how little MUST be better than commercially produced. Because I haven't fed commercial food for longer than I care to remember, I'm out of that side of things, but when I did, in my case, buying bulk allowed for discounts.
  6. Agreed, but just minced meat is not enough. There needs to be a variety of other raw meats and proteins to give a balance. I can't remember when I last fed commercial food to either of my boys.
  7. Yes, they will sell by the carton, but they won't give a bulk discount.
  8. Are there any produce stores in your area? They normally have cans of dog food and you can most likely negotiate a price if you take a full box. It's worth a try.
  9. Oops, I just discovered on the general discussion board that there is such a breed as the Australian Bulldog. You learn something new every day.
  10. I don't think that's because of the poop but more like an excuse used by those who don't like dogs in general to have dogs OUT of public parks and beaches. I am in full agreement that people should pick up after their dogs but it annoys when I see dog people being so petty in turning on their own in wanting people fined for not doing as they should ........especially when they themselves add to the thousands of tons of human effluent that is pumped out into the oceans each week. :p In regard to the DNA testing for offending pooping dogs.......amazing isn't it when a suspected rapist or murderer has rights that says he is allowed to refuse being DNA tested ...but an owner of an offending pooping dog has no such rights. Crazy world we live in hey ! I don't think it's a matter of turning on their own. These lazy irresponsible dog owners give responsible dog owners a bad name, and as usual, all of us, responsible or not are lumped into the same pool. Frankly, if you own a dog, you need to clean up after it in public. Surely the back yard is cleaned, but then again, these 'responsible' owners probably take their dogs to the street to poop on other people's gardens or nature strips. We used to have a neighbour who walked his dog every morning, reading the newspaper, so he thought he no one would notice if his dog voided in the public area or private gardens. Neighbours would pick up after the dog and present it at his front door. Stopped him continuing the practice fairly quickly. I do recall a while ago, when a woman was accused of not cleaning up after her dog in St.Kilda, Victoria and the council did DNA testing. Can't remember the outcome.
  11. I just finished an article in the morning paper about an opera singer administered mouth to mouth to her 5 month old puppy Bella, when the pup stopped breathing after swallowing a bee. Now that's love to the enth degree!!!! Bella was described as an Australian Bulldog. Is there such a breed? She looked to me like a boxer.
  12. In my opinion, it is your choice to bring or not bring treats to the park. It is up to the 'offending' dog's owner to keep him/her under control and not make a pest of themselves. You will probably find they carry on when they have no control of their charge and they are more embarrased than anything because of their inability. If you choose to train your dog at the park then in my mind, that's OK too. What I do object to and take offense to is when owners, without asking feed my dogs treats.
  13. Kirty, or anyone else out there who can shed some light on this query for me. I add this product to Benson's meals twice a day, because of pancreatic insufficiency. There are times, as it was this morning, that he didn't want to have his breakfast. Usually, after about 30 minutes, I throw it out because of the Enzyplex. How long can I safely leave it to be able to offer him food later? I have googled and there is no answer, except to say to leave it for 10 - 15 minutes to allow the predigestive enzymes to start acting. When he does eat, he has a fantastic appetite and the enzymes are helping him to retain his weight. I think without the product, he would be skin and bones. Anybody know?
  14. Whenever we have had two dogs at the same time it has always been males by personal choice. Schnauzers are 'talkers'. Some more than most. We have never had any trouble introducing a new puppy when the need arose in the past and honestly, nothing special was ever done. There will be growling at times but I think that is just a teaching thing from the older resident dog. We have had that in the past but there was not a time when we had to separate the two because of this. My younger dog at the moment 'talks' with soft growls, and to some people this is mistaken for aggression. That's just the way he is and you are , I am sure, able to distinguish between a "I mean business' growl to an educational or play growl. The older boy is most likely teaching him the ropes. Honestly, unless there is true aggression, from either side, I wouldn't interfere, let them eat together, play together etc., but give puppy time out to catch up on his much needed sleep for now. You want them to be great mates and bond and this will come in time and they will protect and look out for each other.
  15. Several years ago, we had a very large Great Dane, and that's exactly how he would sit on a chair or couch. I called it being considerate, as he was leaving space for the rest of the family
  16. My boys are both neutered, and because they have access to the outside whenever they wish I don't always see where they are at all times plus there are times that I am away from the house. I have washed down the area with just plain water from the outside tap, and that's not working hence the question, "what to use". Up till now, neither boys have maked any partof the back patio area and havealways gone on the grass or used the trees.
  17. We have just bought a new barbeque with a cover, and our younger boy is marking. What is mine is also his!!!!! It is standing on our back patio, and as yet,I haven't actually seen him doing the deed, but I know my older boy wouldn't do such a thing lol. What can I use to stop him doing this. He has access to the back garden through a doggie door and I don't want to restrict this.
  18. What a lovely neighbour you are. I would also tell the truth, unless they were scary ferals, better to know & stop worrying. Not your fault. I agree. In the long run, you'll feel a lot better in yourself, and you are a good person for doing this. If it was the reverse, I am sure you would want to know the whole truth. Good for you.
  19. So they don't have the right to know how their beloved family member spent the last moments of it's life?? I see where you are coming from but I think unless these neighbors are particularly the angry retaliation type, they deserve to know the truth. Look at it this way- if your dog got out and mine attacke it, how would you feel if I just left it's body on the street and called you saying I found your dead dog? I totally agree. Even though I would never entertain the idea of having a rat as a pet the rat in question obviously was much loved and in the end, a liar will always be caught out. I would be honest and tell the truth. Why not offer to buy them another rat for a pet if indeed it turns out to be theirs and any other accessories they may need when they feel the time is right to replace him/her?
  20. A lot does depend on the resident dog,but when we brought home our new puppy years ago, we arrived home, put the puppy in the back garden with the resident and just stepped back to observe. The main thing to remember is NOT to over fuss with the puppy. They will work it all out and the resident dog will teach the pup some manners and there will be growling but you will know whether it is serious or just a teaching curve for the pup. There will be times when the pup screams 'blue murder' but 99% of the time it's just a bluff lol. I recall when we got out pup, I used to listen to a segment on ABC with Dr.Hugh Wirth, and a woman called in to say that her older dog wouldn't go anywhere near the puppy. It turned out that beforehand, each time the older dog approached the puppy, he was promptly squirted, with a water pistol, so what in the hell did the idiot owner expect? Basically, it just takes a lot of common sense and not that much different to bringing up children. Good luck and keep us informed on how things go.
  21. so where are your answers to the OP questions? If you can't answer the questions why be in this thread at all except to sh!t stir? All those so keen to say other people are being "bad" without actually responding to the OP are no different to those they are accusing. Reading posts made by these rude, condescending people would be enough to scare people off. Yes, you're correct. The reason I didn't respond to the OP's questions is because I am not a breeder and never intend to be. I am just a dog lover and owner of two purebred boys, so I am not qualified to give my opinion. But the manner in which some of the experts answer, and not just in this particular post but others in the past is sending a message to the naive in these matters not to ask silly questions and that truely is putting them off. I don't believe there was any sh!t stirring going on and again I repeat,if you don't ask, you don't learn.
  22. I'm glad a lot of you are coming forward with your inexperience. Gosh, we all have to start at the beginning and we shouldn't have to be shot down and made to feel bad just because of being unsure. Instead of patronizing posts it would be more than helpful to be steered in the right direction. I sincerely hope the OP is reading and perhaps comes forward again for some sound and helpful advice.
  23. Good for you and all the other posters who answered along the same lines. A lot of people are 'ignorant', through no fault of their own and I don't mean this in a nasty way. All of us, I am sure had to learn the expertise of firstly owning, and then along the line, breeding. I was always told, and have told my children and grandchildren, 'if you don't ask, you won't learn'. I for instance, breed exhibition budgerigars, and I often cringe at the thought of the questions I asked of the experienced breeders. Never once was I pounced on like some are here, but was patiently taught the rights and wrongs of breeding these little birds. Had I not been treated in this way, no doubt I would most likely have left the fancy. If this OP is not fair dinkum as some of you may think then so be it, but if he/she was in fact genuine, chances are we won't hear from him/her again. Some of you experienced breeders out there need to show a little more understanding and patience with a potential beginner.
