I use Tacrolimus for Benson who has sever dry eye. In his case, it has not really improved his numbers for the dry eye,and the count comes in very low, but in his case,it doesn't seem to bother him. He seems to cope with the low count. The only drawback is that it is frightfully expensive, but his eye, given his age, and according to the eye specialistist healthy. Yeah Ill agree with the tear count as my dog had better tear readings with the optimmune but it did not agree with him. Another positive thing is that it is much cheaper than the optimmune as well. Do you use it once or twice a day? I use one drop twice a day.

You said 'stupid me gives in and gives him chicken necks, which he inhales.......' You and your dog are not as stupid as you think. Your dog is trying to tell you something. He doesn't want or like the dry food. Admittedly, dogs should not be spoiled but what's wrong with feeding him the way dogs should be fed?

They obviously have more money than sense. I know it's theirs to do with it what they want, but for heavens sake, These are dogs we are talking about. I don't celebrate my boy's birthdays. Does that make me a bad owner, and does that mean I love them any less?

Royal Canin Confused
twodoggies2001 replied to germanshepherdlove's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Chicken meal is 'the dry rendered product from a combination of clean chicken flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from whole carcasses of chicken, exclusive of feathers, heads, feet and entrails'. It's dried meat and skin, may include bone, doesn't include feathers or guts. I have no problem with a product listing 'meal' from a named animal source. If it lists 'by-products' , or just meat or meat meal without a named animal, I run a mile. My dogs mini schnauzers, love the feet nails and all, entrails and whatever is attached except for the fatty skin and on one rare occasion, there was a head in amongst the goodies. Jasper didn't quite know what to do with it but finally worked out that it was good enough to eat lol. I love the way they crunch through the edible bones and the sight of seeing them with a chicken foot hanging out of their mouths is hilarious. -
Royal Canin Confused

RC tends to be highly palatable and my Whippet boy loves it. If the proof of the value of the food is how well dogs do on it, RC makes the grade. Don't know what kind of RC you're looking at but this is what's in the one I feed. Meat is first product listed. And here's the poodle one Kirst Golden, I agree. The ingredients list posted by Poodlefan does list 'meat' first but the rest of the ingredients following are in my opinion just fillers. The poodle one has chicken meal first. Heaven only knows what that is meant to be!!! Dogs are carnivores there need meat and the valuable proteins that go with it. Fish is also an excellent source of protein as is cottage cheese and egg. Taurine is a natural occurence in raw meat. In my opinion buying a bag of this or any other such food is throwing money away. I can actually purchase Royal Canin at wholesale prices because I have connections in the pet industry and wouldn't waste my money. -
Exactly my thoughts twodoggies2001 Tinned food is takeway for dogs. Dogs are not 'designed' to eat cooked food. As you said breath and overall body smell is so much sweeter . My Lab is thriving on Raw meat & bones, Fish, Fruit, Vegies & natural yoghurt. Again, no one is advocating feeding tinned food as a sole source of nutrition. We eat lots of things we shouldn't too, maybe someone would like to start a thread on the crap that owners eat. The OP asked a question about canned food and why some of us are against feeding in this way, and not mentioning in that post that she also feeds raw. We gave our opinions according to that post and you are welcome to start a thread on the crap most, not all of us owners eat.

Not exactly. Remember that ingredients are listed by weight when added, and the ingredients list does not include added water. That means if the can says "lamb meat, rice", you might conclude that the can contains a lot of lamb and a lesser amount of rice. However the can will probably contain largely cooked rice, as the rice will have been added dry and the lamb wet, and rice greatly expands during cooking. Well that's even worse. Rice is not a staple diet for dog, so in the case you pointed out, there is even less meat in the canned/dry food.
-
That makes some difference if the canned stuff only makes up a part of the diet. You didn't say that in the first place. By the way, you can give plenty of variety feeding raw too. Many different meats, fish and organ meats. With the cans or dry food, the main thing you need to keep in mind is to take note of the ingredients. The earlier an ingredient comes up on the listing, the more of that ingredient is in the can. Can't comment on Nature's Gift but just as an example, Beneful is full of grains and 'meal' which are cheap and of no value to the dog yet because of very clever advertising, owners are led to believe that it is a great product. Vets sell the some of the processed foods but don't forget, they make money out of if and I am led to believe that in their studies, nutrition plays only a very very small part. But in the end, it is up to the dog owner to feed what they feel is correct for their pets and my choice is to say away from the commercially produced one.
-
I feed my boys raw and natural because my feeling is that's what dogs were intended to eat. They are thriving on this method of feeding including gaining many benefits too. Smaller poops, clean teeth and sweet smelling breath not to mention gas. One of the other big factors in steering away from canned and dried foods is the fact they are highly processed. I wouldn't like to be fed processed foods day in and day out and I am sure you don't eat out a can every night.

Whatever this poor creature happens to be, it sure looks neglected and I suspect not very well either. Just look at the eyes. There is no sparkle of a healthy dog/sheep.

How Do I Get Rid Of A Mouse Outside

Not to mention the disease they spread. That's why they have pest exterminators. Wouldn't give them any chance if I had them around my house. -

I Am Never Walking My Dogs In This Neighbourhood Again.
twodoggies2001 replied to Jimmay's topic in General Dog Discussion
You're right, but I wonder how many if it came to a situation where saving themselves or their dogs was the only option, just which one they would take? -
Yes agree, warning bells went off here. The reason to go with a registered breeder is because you know what you are getting, and not an unknown quantity (as in a pound dog) which would be especially important in a breed that can have temperament issues. Good luck perth_girl, I hope you find the right breeder sooner rather than later. It is worth the wait. I have made great new friends not only with my puppy's breeders but also with my puppy's sire's breeders, an unexpected bonus! It's not just the fact that a $100 deposit is required by the breeder, but the fact that is is an unrefundable deposit, as stated by the OP. What if the breeder can't come up with a suitable pup?

If the police are not able to enter a property where they believe a crime is being committed then why have a police force?
-
Seriously, where was it written that the policeman put his face in the dog's mouth. The police were only doing their job and I assume so were the dogs defending their territory but nonetheless, the dog attacked. What were the police supposed to do, enter with their guns blazing? If they had gotten backup, you can bet all those dogs would have been killed.

When our older boy departs this earth, we will looking into bringing an older puppy into our family unit. Call me lazy, selfish, or whatever you like, but I can't see myself at my senior age, getting up in the middle of the night to let a puppy out to the toilet, and all those feeds during the day. Hopefully, this will all be attended to by someone else, namely the breeder of my chosen breed. I am probably looking at a pup that has been run on and proven not to be up to scratch for the show ring or breeding. At this stage, I am not entertaining the thought of bringing in a new member of the family whilst my older boy is still with us.

And I can't believe you called her a lady!!! She certainly is not with such a foul mouth and attitude to boot. Sometimes by acting in this manner they think they appear tough, but they're not. Imagine, if she vocalises like that, what her kids will grow into. Poor kids.

Heard on Neil Mitchell that these two brutes were pts under instructions of the council.
-
Thank you STD, my thoughts exactly Off course It does matter! To think otherwise Is just pure Ignorance What hope Is there ever for overturning BSL If these statistics were always Incorrect?? It will only serve to make It worse than It already Is I hope all Involved recover fully, and agree dogs need to be pts, and owners fined/prosecuted and banned from owning further dogs Without these harsh punishments, there Is never a hope In hell that these sorts of attacks will dwindle The dogs shouldn't be the only ones punished, In most cases It's the owners who have failed them I think the point trying to be made about that it doesn't matter what the attacking breed was, is even if it were a breed, as an example, a fox terrier, or a pomeranian or other breed other than the bully type, the dogs in question need to be dealt with. I don't believe that the finger is being pointed specifically at the bully type breeds. It just happens that the owner himself said that one of his dogs was a pit bull. Newspaper journalists are very often ignorant regarding dog breeds and really should get their facts right but that doesn't change fact that these two dogs unprovoked, attacked several people walking in the street, minding their own business and there is every possibility that most of them will be not only physically, but also mentally scarred for the rest of their lives. I agree, the owners, should be prosecuted and banned from owning any further dogs and the dogs be pts.
-
If you reread MY post you will also see that it wasn't me that said the owner said one of the dogs was a pitbull. Yes, it definately doesn't make any difference what breed these two dogs are extremely dangerous and should not be given any airspace. It wasn't just this poor unfortunate family that was attacked. These brutes attacked another young fellow down the same street, and another young man walking with his girlfriend. The last chap was also admitted to hospital with horrific wounds. If these two dogs were yours, what would you do?
