  1. Yes it was so nice and quiet around here for awhile! I enjoyed having to say, "sorry, we have no kittens but check back in a few weeks - kitten season's about to start", LOL. We've just taken in a mum with 4-day old babies and her daughter from another litter who is heavily pregnant too, because their owner is going into a nursing home. The two queens are co-parenting the kittens, so we are keeping them together at the same carer's.
  2. We've got a female pup, she's about 5 months old now http://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/170352 She's fostered by a family with young sons who play with her and have taught her to walk on lead, so she's used to children. Janey
  3. Snickers has a serious applicant from Caringbah South, can anyone near there do a home check for me? Cheers, Janey
  4. Mine took about 12 days to arrive and Karen's arrived in a week. It read all my chips, even Dylan's chip which is >10 yrs old.
  5. Can we somehow maintain a quiet list of people like this? I'm sure every group knows of at least one person in their town with hoarding pathology, I can think of two more people in our area other than the subject of this thread. These people try to join rescue groups because they *believe* they are saving the animals. One of these people presented well during a homecheck for fostering for us, but we didn't give her 2nd foster opportunity because it became apparent with the first foster that she has a problem. After we dropped her, she did some negligent (to the dogs) things while fostering for another rescue group who didn't know about her history. This person still scours the internet for FTGH cats AND dogs to "rescue" and then rehome, sometimes after breeding from them first She is always in trouble with her local council, but its a small regional town with no resources. Whenever we hear through the grapevine that she is offering to temp-care or foster for other rescue groups, we warn them, but that's only the instances when one of us hears about it in time. What to do?
  6. I bought this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AUSTRALIAN-MINI-MICROCHIP-PET-SCANNER-ISO-CHIPS-free-test-chip-MID05-/180794805831?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2a1835ce47. It comes with a 1-year warranty and costs approx $120 including airmail from the UK, depending on exchange rate on the day the bank processes the payment. It recharges via a USB port, no battery replacement at all and I've been using it at least weekly for the past 4 or 5 months without needing to recharge. Because its so small, it just lives in my handbag so that we now ensure that every animal is scanned on intake and again when leaving our care. Chips get lost and paperwork can be mixed up -- when my scanner arrived I went around my place scanning everyone to play with the new toy  and discovered a cat had lost her chip somewhere in my house.
  7. I bought ours from a dealer in the UK via eBay. With currency conversion, it cost $130, arrived in 10 days and works well. It certainly has made my life easier to have one! Janey
  8. Hi Jane, I know that CPR rehomed the fawn Wagga whippet to a local Wagga family, as I happened to be at Fernleigh Kennels when they collected her. Border Rescue in Wodonga have a male whippet, Max, available. I've met him and he's a very nice dog. http://www.border-rescue.com.au/index.php/pet-adoption/dogs/item/85-max
  9. I'm here and have messaged. I had to go away for work and was unable to use my phone or internet for entire period.
  10. We match the foster carer to the dog - everyone's preferences, home arrangements, existing dogs, training abilities, etc are different and the carer is ALWAYS free to say "no" to a particular dog or send it back to Stacey or me if it doesn't fit in. All rescued dogs do their quarantine period with Stacey (smalls) or me (big boofas) first anyway, which also gives the dog time to settle from the pound environment and for us to begin assessing their behaviour and which foster home to put them in. I'm intrigued by the concept of placing a dog in at least two foster homes. This wouldn't work for some dogs, due to their breed tendencies or disposition, but I see huge benefits if we put arrangements in place to do this as a general practice. For example, my household has a very clear pack structure and new arrivals learn immediately that I'm the alpha bitch LOL and my old wolfhound female is the beta bitch - she and I simply do not permit certain behaviours. I've currently got a foster dog who behaved well in my house for many months, but when moved to another foster carer has shown that she has difficulty figuring out where she belongs in the hierarchy - a lot of squabbling over who is dominant - and she has done this at 2 other foster carers. So, we now know that this particular dog requires a strong leader to keep her in her place and that is going to affect her adoption placement. Unfortunately, this girl is also a big brindle boofer, so she's going to be very hard to adopt out.
  11. That is disgraceful and completely irresponsible! In addition to having to enforce a desexing contract (there are other threads about this), the first vaccination doesn't even get administered until age 6-8 weeks. They also need a couple of doses of wormer before leaving care. Also, too many kittens from dirty/wormy/flea-ridden birth circumstances (especially those taken away from mum before 8 weeks) die because they have poor immunity from the rough start. Some develop Fading Kitten Syndrome where you get a day or two of gradual decline where you can try to save them, but others just drop dead without warning, like kitten SIDS or something Even well-run cat breeders lose kittens to FKS. I've had to tell a potential adopter who is waiting for a particular kitten to reach 1 kg in weight for desexing that the kitten Faded and the loss is sad enough for an experienced carer -- how much worse would it be for a family with children to have their new best friend die?
  12. I don't think Caroline is on DOL, but I'll find out the bank details and PM you, huntrox.
  13. and certain other (rural) pounds don't employ vets or certified techs at all, the ACO just ties the dogs to a fence and shoots them, yes in 2012
  14. This girl will be safe with Carolyn at AWDRI I'll pick her up this arvo to get vaccinated and temp care her until boarding space and transport can be arranged. PS. I'm sure AWDRI would appreciate donations towards boarding and transport.
  15. Hello all, I've been contacted this morning by a man who is a service worker on farm machinery. He is presently working at a farm where there is a young black female kelpie, 5 months old, who the farmer is planning to shoot because she isn't a good worker. The farmer will give him the dog to bring into town (Wagga Wagga) either today or tomorrow when he knocks off work if a rescue group can place her somewhere. The worker has already contacted the pound but isn't able to pay the $140 surrender fee for a dog that isn't his and he's just trying to prevent being shot. He says that she is a friendly pup with other dogs, kids and the farm's cats, and it would be a shame for such a nice youngster to be killed when she would make a great companion dog. I can provide a few days of temp care until transport, but BFPR has no available foster places for her. If anyone has a place, ring me on 0416220527. Regs, Janey
  16. Anyone in the Liverpool/Bankstown/Campbelltown area? Please PM me if you can check the home's suitability for a large-breed puppy. Cheers, Janey
  17. Our key member who does Canberra-area homechecks, Nicole (nikkid), just had a baby girl this week . Can anyone help us with yard checking this weekend? One in Bonner and one in Wamboin. Please ring me on 0416 220 527 for info. Cheers, Janey
  18. Thank you so much for your kind offer, but that's too far to ask you to drive Janey
  19. Anyone in vicinity of Ocean Grove who can do a yard check for us? Ocean Grove is near Point Lonsdale, southeast of Geelong. Please PM me for details. Cheers, Janey
  20. Thanks, that would be great! Please PM your email address to me and I'll forward their application info. Cheers, Janey
  21. A couple of our dogs' profiles made the local television news when the reporter showed off this app on his iPad :-) I think its fantastic that these young men (teenage uni students) came up with the idea and developed the app for PetRescue for free, just because they thought it would be a good thing to do
