  1. Pele, my almost 3.5 year old Bull Terrier received her first C3 by her breeder at 6 weeks old, then had another C3 at 14 weeks to enable me to get her into obedience classes. No way was I doing a C5. Not long after the 2nd vacc. I learned about the new 3 year protocols - yippee!! Went back to the vet with the printout and they changed the vacc. cert to 3 years Well, didn't that confuse the obedience club They had to accept it :D Now Pele is due again. I'd much rather titre test, but then there's the obedience club thingy again I went to the Dr Jean Dodds seminar here in Adelaide last weekend which was run by the Golden Retriever Club. Two of the GR club office bearers are also Past President/Life Member and current secretary of the obedience club. I asked if the obedience club would accept a titre test - NUP!! It's an ANKC ruling, so even if they were converted it ain't gonna happen soon Looks like I'll have to give Pele one more 3 year C3 (she hasn't had one since 14 weeks old). I'm hoping that she'll get her CD title before the end of the year, but even if she does we'd still like to go out to training and do some fun agility, so don't have much choice.
  2. Contact Dr Clare Middle http://www.claremiddle.com/index.htm I've heard that she does titre testing.
  3. You just beat me to the Superglue suggestion  Haven't tried it, but it has been mentioned on my Bull Terrier List.
  4. Sorry to hear about your boy. Have the vets checked for an inner ear infection?
  5. Pele, my Bull Terrier loves apple. I have thought of buying a bag of dried apple for training treats.
  6. I've heard they also charge triple the price for the same thing too! Does anyone know if this is true?
  7. Pele is our 3rd Bull Terrier. They've all been bathed weekly (inside dogs), and Jessie and now Pele also swim at the beach every day. I've never had any skin problems. I also use warm water. I also use a hair-dryer in winter and Pele just loves that This is what I've learned from experience. It was suggested to wet the dog all over and start at the head. Nup, big mistake there :-) You're gonna get wet big time I wet the head area first, shampoo, clean ears and rinse that and then dry. If she shakes, there's only a wet head to wet you and surrounding areas, in our case the laundry - not the whole body :D After the head, then wet the rest of the body and give a good shampoo and rinse. Most dogs seem to shake if the head is wet and it gets in ears. I get most of the water off with one of those chamois and then make sure that she's completely covered in a towel before I lift her out of the laundry trough and she shakes Works for us
  8. Pele had a C3 as a 6 week old puppy from her breeder. I didn't vaccinate her until 14 weeks, and then only C3 to get her into obedience training. Just after that I found out about the 3 year vaccination, and yeah, it's the same vaccination despite what they tell you. Went armed with all the info to the vet, and yes, they agreed with me and re-issued her vacc. cert to show 3 years Pele's vacc's were due again in May. I really don't want to vaccinate and would rather do a Titre test, but don't think that the obedience club would accept it. Oh well, we've got until next February In the mean time I'm going to the Dr Jean Dodds seminar here in Adelaide this weekend, so hope to learn more. It's being put on by the Golden Retriever Club as part of their Nationals and the secretary of the obedience club is also treasurer of the Goldie club, so hope that she goes to the seminar
  9. Hi, I'd up the Omega fatty acids in you SCWT diet as mentioned as coat conditioned comes from the inside. Fish oil is great, so is flax seed oil if you dog doesn't have grain allergies. I also gave Pele (Bull Terrier) Emu Oil capsules when I was showing her. I also use a natural shampoo that I add a bit of Jojoba Oil (about a tablespoon to a litre bottle of shampoo). Jojoba Oil is expensive but it goes a long, long way. I buy cheap non-scented supermarket moisturisers for myself and add Jojoba and an aromatherapy oil or 2 and it's like buying a super expensive moisturiser for a fraction of the price
  10. No they are not. Spuds M, even tho' your bully was purchased as a pet, I would still contact your breeder and get their opinion first as they are more knowledgeable on Bull Terriers than you vet and get their opinion. They may even refer you to their vet who deals with their dogs and knows the blood-line.
  11. Sorry to hear about Judd's knee. I'd get him onto a joint supplement such as glucosamine/chondroitin straight away. Sasha's Blend is supposed to be quite good, but I used a human one for Jessie (now at the "Bridge") that I got from my Health Food Store and was cheaper. I think that it was "Wagener's" and you only needed about 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon from memory. There is a Nutralife one but it is full of sweeteners and you need to give about 6 teaspoons - yuck!! Here in Adelaide Healthy Life stores have a "Magic Monday". It's free membership and on the first Monday of the month you get 20% off RRP non-food items. I assume that they are Australia wide, and no I don't get commission
  12. I was going to suggest the same thing as I feed BARF and don't like handling raw meat either, so use the plastic disposable gloves to package up the meat, chicken necks etc too. If the freezer isn't too big and it's not too much hassle you could send that over to your friends place too with each meal packaged up for her to defrost and toss into a bowl. I keep all the butter, chinese take-away and similar size containers for Pele's meals.
  13. Definately NO COOKED Bones as they can splinter. I'd only give a small bit of marrow at a time in case it's too rich and causes tummy upsets.
  14. So sorry to hear about your friend's lab. I lost Jessie (12.5 yrs), my Bull Terrier to Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in Feb 2005. I've got lots of links to heart disease and DCM on her webpage http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/5493/links.html
  15. I remove the seeds as my food processor doesn't chop them very well. When they are dry I grind them in the coffee grinder ($15 from Priceline) and throw them in the next veggie mix. I never thought of leaving the skin on
  16. Excellent book ;) I know Jane thru the various Bull Terrier Lists I'm on, and met her in person a few years ago. Her dogs are amazing and just adore training. The book is very easy to read and is a totally different approach to training Independent Breeds.
  17. Hi Capanash, Good luck on 8th July. Pele (16 month old Bull Terrier) and I are entering our first Mock Trial on 9th July. We had our first ring practise 2 weeks ago. I made more mistakes than Pele I used to be Trial Secretary at my obedience club for 10 years, but have never trialled:-) Get to the trial early, walk around, don't do too much practise before, or your dog will be bored with it before you enter the ring. Try and be calm when you enter the ring or your dog will pick up on your anxiety. Just think of it as a conformation exercise. You go in the ring, you both have fun and your dog does a great Stand for Examination. Fingers crossed for the stays and recall I'm having problems keeping Pele motivated without verbal and food rewards How to keep her motivated for heel pattern Good luck
  18. Here are some sites to get you started - http://www.dogpatch.org/obed/obpage4.cfm http://www.clickertraining.com/home/ http://www.clickandtreat.com/ http://www.wagntrain.com/OC/index.htm#Learning http://www.shirleychong.com/keepers/lessons.html
  19. Hi Hesapandabear, Where did you get your dehydrator from? I've thought of getting one but have never seen them in the department stores. Might get Pele one for Christmas
  20. Kabana is King with Pele Cheese is great, liver treats. I try to vary it to keep it interesting, and only tiny pieces, about fingernail size.
  21. Hi feralpup, That's what we call Pele, 16 month old Bull Terrier AKA "Perilous Pele" or "The Feral Peril" From day one (8 weeks) I worked on "Watch" and "Come". Pele is excellent with both. Before obedience I can call her (on lead) from playing with another dog and she'll sit and watch me, so she gets to have play sessions. Impresses lots of people Try and not allow too much free play before class until she (what's her name?) learns "watch" and "come". People say that Bull Terriers are dumb and that you can't train them. With Pele I've used reward based training and she has passed a class each month at 2 obedience clubs (one we only get to on graduation day due to shows). She graduated Basic Obedience at nearly 13 months, and we are looking at our first obedience trial in the very near future. We've just started agility too.
  22. Hi puppybabe, New puppy, how exciting! I'd start training from day one. Clicker Training is excellent. Use only reward based training, keep it short and keep it fun. Pele, my 16 month old Bull Terrier came home at 8 weeks. By 12 weeks she could sit, drop, stand, short stay, come, high 5, roll over, crawl, watch. At obedience she graduated a class each month and we are anticipating entering our first obedience trial very soon - YIKES!!! Good luck
  23. Crates are the best thing since slice bread. Even better than sliced bread Don't know what I'd do without a crate. Pele, AKA "The Feral Peril" just loves her crate. She sleeps in it at night. I leave the door open at night. Now that the mornings are darker and colder I have to bribe her out with liver treats At dog shows she can't wait until I assemble her crate so that she can get in. When we walk up to the local deli to get the paper, I tie her up outside and before a can step inside she's shrieking. Embarrassing!!! I've got 2 large 90 x 60cm crates. I paid about $70 - $80 at "Cheap As Chips for one. It has a sloping front to put in a station wagon. The other I paid about $90 through my Bull Terrier Club. I LUV CRATES!!!!
