We have two short haired JRT's. has anyone used a Furminator on short haired jacks? The older one has always shed quite heavily even with daily brushing with a mitt. the male does not appear to shed as much. I always thought that grooming combs such as these were for longer haired or dogs with a definite winter/summer coat. Appreciate your advice - don't want to buy one and find it unsuitable thanks

we have a 5 y.o. male jrt who licks his paws constantly - we have tried everything to stop him including a collar, expensive diets - all to no avail. He is also on (1/4)cortisone tablet daily. we have changed his diet, bathed his feet incase it was an irritant and constantly tell him to stop licking. we are have a home office so are home all day nearly everyday - our other JRT does not lick her feet. it absolute frustion last week I bought a home brand chest rub - like vicks but heaps cheaper. I have been putting smear on his feet to deter the licking and it appears to be helping as he doesn't like the smell. And yes I am keeping a watch for adverse reactions Hopefully we can finally break the cycle Have a vet check first though

I watch my dogs and think I will come back as a dog and live in my house! They don't worry about food, water, warmth or love. They sleep whenever and wherever, preferably on my waterbed. They are cuddled, kissed, played with and adored. Yep, definitely coming back as my dog

my 12 y.o female JRT is impossible on windy days, she is unsettled, disobedient and generally out of sorts - I am thankful the August winds are finished. Oh the joy of our dogs and their funny little ways

My two JRT's will do just about anything for a piece of banana, they love'em

My two JRT's pester me for a walk regardless of the weather, however often having put their harnesses on and opening the front door the blast of cold or the site of rain is enough to turn them around or we get as far as the letter box and turn around, at least they have satisfied their need for going for a walk by having their harnesses put on

My 12 y.o. female JRT is very stubbon, she will turn her face away when I ask her to do something she doesn't want, especially if it involves getting off our bed or the lounge. She also uses "selective" deafness to other commands. Maybe her behaviour is learnt because when she is naughty I "withdraw" eye contact when she comes sooking up to me after she has been in trouble

Just googled the Ten Dog Commandments, brings a tear to the eye and will have to go cuddle my two JRT's Dog Ten Commandments Submitted by: craftymom61 Author: Stan Rawlinson Dog Ten Commandments 1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful remember that before you get me. 2. Give me time to understand what you want of me. 3. Place your trust in me- it is crucial to my well being. 4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment. 5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you. 6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understands your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me. 7. Be aware that how ever you treat me, I will never forget. 8. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you. 9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate,or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I might not be getting the right food, or I have been out to long, or my heart is getting to old and weak. 10. Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: "I cannot bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier for me if you are there, even my death. Remember that I love you.

Our 12 y.o. female JRT has done this all her life. I think because she was an "only" dog she learnt to amuse herself Our 5 y.o. male JRT does not do it, if he wants to play he just annoys the female until she chases him

We had two children and I wanted a third - we bought a dog instead and never regretted it. She is now 12 y.o. and no teenage angst!

I can never resist a dog, young or old, I always smile at the owner and ask if i can have a quick chat with their dog, most are pleased but some do look at me like I am weird. I am especially sooky if on holidays without my dogs, I will literally cross the road to "accidently" run into someone walking a dog just to have some "doggy time"

Tammy is our 12 y.o. JRT - she is very reactive to a number of triggers. I have taught her to pick up a ball when she wants bark in the house - it is great for muffling the sound, especially if we are on the phone in our home office. She is also very reactive to other dogs after being attacked, being small sometimes I just pick her up and walk past the other dog or if possible pull her lead tight and keep her strictly by my side. Our 5 y.o. male JRT couldn't care less and always gives her a confused look - why are you barking? why is Mum picking you up? oh look another dog to talk to She is also reactive to motorbikes - she is now just growling at them after years of pulling the lead tight and trying to distract her - she used to growl, jump, bark and pull on her lead.

you know your fur kids run the house when it takes longer to pick up the toys than to do the vacuuming

I have a JRT who is an incessant licker of his paws. I bought one of these and I thought it might sate his licking fetish. Nope just pulled the treat out of the centre in about 5 minutes flat. Grrrrr

My 12 y.o. JRT female pulls on the lead when we first start out for our daily walks, if she doesn't settle down within about 5 minutes I will just stop and not walk until she comes and stands beside me, I don't say a word she knows I won't move until the lead is slack. We then start again, if she pulls I stop, must look strange to other people but it works for us, only have to do it about once every 6 - 8 weeks. She has not been good with others dogs after she was attacked by 2 huskies that were off leashes, I sometimes just find it easier to pick her up and walk past other dogs. Our 4 y.o. JRT male is great with other dogs and is happy generally to just walk at my side or a little behind. I try not to walk them in the direction everyday and they do get off leash time most days.

I have two JRT's, 12 y.o (Tammy) is very smart, makes her games up, she particularly likes to take a golf ball upstairs, accross the verandah and drop it on the pergola roof and watch it roll down into the back yard, she then runs down stairs, into the back yard, finds the ball and goes again. She will come and give a small noise to get my attention and then take me to the cupboard where her coats are if she is cold. The 4 y.o JRT (Boags) tends to look to the older dog to solve the problem or to us, he has worked out if she is in the bean bag he wants he will run to the front door and bark, she will quickly follow and he runs back and gets into the nice warm bean bag. Tammy also likes to bury golf balls in blankets or the bean bags and then flips the blanket or bean bag and the ball richochets all over the place. Another game until we took them away was to get 3 marbles in her mouth, jump up on the lounge and lay them out in a row, she would then nudge them one at a time off the lounge to see how far they would roll. She would then pick them all up and start the game again. We got tired of retrieiving marbles from under the furniture and they hurt like mad when you tread on them in bare feet in the dark! Neither dog has had formal training, just basic sit, down, wait to eat, come when called etc.

If I were your neighbour I'd prefer you just obeyed the Drs orders.I have 2 town criers next to me & fair dinkum it is as bad as barkers. IMHO in may be cute now but you are probably teaching him a very bad habit that you may live to regret. Can't you teach him to read or watch a DVD quietly? My JRT howls when the answering machine is on, I like to think he is trying to talk to the people on the other end of the phone

Our two JRT love to play and can get quite boisterous, when we want the game to end we say the word "Nice" as in time to calm down, stop being rough and enjoy a gently cuddle/pat - almost like a cool down after exercise. As soon as we say "Nice" they know it is time to behave, this works well when introducing them to people or even other dogs as it reminds them of the behaviour we expect in this situation. As JRT can be dominate dogs we don't let them win tug of war games too often.

When we only had one Jack Russell she was constantly taking things belonging to our youngest son - I thought she was trying to climb the social ladder, when we brought our second JR home she was happy that she was no longer the last on the social ladder.

The remainder of his coat, ears and tail are totally clean with no sign of flaky skin, sore spots (hot spots) or patchy hair. I know certain processed foods make the area around his mouth "red" so we stopped all those foods. the vet did suggest a scraping however he felt it would be costly and prove little. thank you for taking this seriously. We have even tried tablets that were over $100 per month but they didn't make any difference either, however the vet had had some success with his own dog with the same issue on the tablets. Leone

thank you for replying - he is on steroids as it does seem to lessen the itch. The days he has 1/2 a tablet there is a noticable difference and he licks a lot less - however long term steroid use is not recommended. He also goes through stages of extended scratching - to the point where his mussle (nose) bleeds We usually bath him in a tub with malaseb in the water to stop any germs that may be building up in the moist area on his paws (they soak while the rest of him washed) and the rest of his body is bathed in various shampoo's that are suppose to soothe irritated skin. It doesn't appear to make a difference if we bath him weekly, fortnightly or monthly - we have tried them all. We live near a reserve and bush so are very vigilant with flea and tick treatment
