Little Gifts

I posted it in general rather than rescue because I thought other dog lovers would find it a sweet story and because the breed names they were giving some of the dogs in Costa Rica were as ridiculous as the ones DOLers come up with every year for the Deshonko BYB Christmas pet thread. I was wrong in my thinking but my thread did encourage the sharing of interesting information regarding the use of the term 'blend' rather than 'breed' and some of the cool work being done by Plan B using this concept.

Oh he is beautiful! They grow up too quickly! I remember when we first started fostering Tempeh she was all square and chunky and now she has the legs of a supermodel and such a long face!

It was me who got an ear bashing and I gave some back. I thought it was a great idea to attract attention to dogs that may not otherwise get a look and as I said in the other thread, as long as the usual assessment tools were used to match up dogs and families/homes then that is what really matters. We use cute/fun all the time to attract attention to dogs in need and this is just another spin on that.

Unacceptable industry practices followed by this salon led directly to the death of my beloved, elderly dog while he was in their care. Not even their close location to a vet was able to save him from their negligence.

Our TFP will even do evil things like trap Tempeh in the hallway or wait till Temp or Stussy aren't looking and lie on top of the toy they were playing with. T and S would never dare challenge her for it back! I think she gets her jollies from their suffering!

Never even thought of that Grumpette! I would be devastated (from my grave) if the remains of any of our dogs were dumped just because we weren't around to advise of our wishes.

I believe the RSPCA has a special sticker that you can leave by your door alerting any services of the animals (numbers, etc) in the house in times of emergencies. We used to have one of these and nearly had to use it during the Qld floods in (?) 2010/2011? If you are ever in an evac situation it helps to stick something on your front door to say x number of people and x number of animals evacuated. If any had to be left behind (like say a bird aviary) then a note about that is also useful to the vols, particularly if they come in post disaster as they can always check it those animals need food and water and have that attended to before you are allowed back into the area. I know we were passing on info down in Brissie to get food and water dropped to all the animals roaming the streets in the parts of Bundy that were cut off during the last disaster event and who were starting to suffer from dehydration and hunger.

I check in every day in the hope he has been at least sighted again. This is just one small but terribly painful part of rescue. I so hope someone has simply taken him in.

We have a Snooty Snout Fun Police Fluffy Butt here. We usually just refer to her as The Fun Police or TFP TCB (The Fun Police Takin' Care of Business when she is being a dibber dobber).

Thank you for doing this. What a horrific experience for a dog to go through. They were very lucky to survive. I've mentioned this on here before (in a previous life I used to assist in determining what caused road fatalities) but untethered dogs do become projectiles in accidents, which can become lethal to them and any people in the car. No idea whether these guys were tethered or contained somehow but you have to assume the impact was a big one to have a human fatality. RIP to the poor owner.

I haven't seen any recent Harper the Horse pics. How big is she now?

If she takes after her mum, Kirislin, she will be a knockout. I like the name Fame. Other suggestions: Flirt, Flaunt, Plume. This! I thought there MUST have been something going on, particularly after the keys incident But I also thought that surely you'd end up having one of these pups after all this time spend with them :laugh: Definitely nothing going on with the hoomans DD, I'm old enough to be his Mum, but he's gorgeous and mighty easy on the eyes. He'll most likely read this too. How dirty must the minds of us DOLers be? Given you were travelling such a distance so frequently I was thinking either she wants (or is getting) one of those pups or she's having an affair with the breeder! Waves to breeder!

The first time I had my OES shorn I was actually unsure she was even mine! It wasn't until I saw and felt the warts on her tail stump that I believed it! I felt like such a terrible mother!

That makes sense. It sits better with me too because it is about individual dogs. Handmade! Original! One off design! All true but I don't think I'd be using those descriptors either for a living thing. I've jumped down from my high horse now. Clearly hormonal.

Pot. Kettle. Black. I'm sure this shelter is taking the piss out of designer dog breeders too (whether consciously or not). I did actually own one of the Deshonko breeds. Can't remember what it got called on the thread but it was a Corgi/GSD cross and I posted a pic of him.

They have done hand painted breed certificates. That would be difficult to do for every dog so it would make sense that only some dogs were given names and used for their promotion. Their shelter also looks quite different to what is probably the norm over here (dozens of dogs in the open behind wire fences). And what about all the laughs the Deshonko dog breed threads here on DOL have attracted (pointing at someone in particular here)? Is it only ok when 'qualified' people make funny stuff up about dogs? I don't think that has led to any BYBs getting new ideas or people seeking out that same breed of dog? I'm sure I will be corrected by someone if I am wrong. And I don't mind different points of view but there are some huge jumps being made here that this idea in Costa Rica will lead to something dark and sinister in our local communities. All I see is beautiful dogs in need being celebrated for their uniqueness. My bad.

As I said, I'm clearly in the minority today. This isn't something you could use on Pet Rescue - the thinking is more outside the square than that. We couldn't even use this for our breed because we are a breed specific group. It's simply an idea to attract attention - not a money making scheme or a contagious virus.

I am doing support work for rescue day in and day out now Bjelkier and think this is smart and cute way of getting attention and standing out from the crowd. We often come up with silly names for cross breed pei simply because it encourages interest, comments and sharing that the dog is looking for a home. Sometimes they also get crazy names. We will stick the word 'pei' in anything we can to attract interest. We dress the dogs up for events (the ones who are ok about dressing up of course). BUT, it doesn't change how we care for or rehome these dogs. And it doesn't make a dog more worthy of buying over another - using a funny or cute approach simply attracts attention and more foot traffic. Rescue groups are constantly trying to find the uniqueness in each dog when they advertise it already - this is just extending the idea and I'm sure there would be a way of advertising a dog by a crazy breed name that ensures potential adopters don't think this is an actual breed. Edited to add I am clearly in the minority today when it comes to mixing some love and joy in with the despair of rescue. I'd ask for the thread to be deleted but always think it is childish when people throw a tantie and do that. But I am incredibly disappointed in the responses and particularly who they are from. Could be because I'm hormonal today but it could also be because our rescue has been dealt some particularly bad blows of late with some beautiful dogs that can't be rehomed through no fault of their own. A little ray of sunshine and hope in the form of a silly and I thought harmless idea (if handled correctly) feels like it has been shat on because of fears it could lead to something more sinister or stupid. I shrug in return

Geez people! They are using this technique as a way of getting attention - and it worked! You would assume/hope that the normal adoption application and assessment processes would still be adhered to regarding all dogs rehomed. The names they have used are long and sometimes ridiculous. They are designed to make a bitsa dog seem a bit more special and stand out so it might at least get noticed amongst the thousands of other dogs also needing homes. Look at all the proud people of these strange dog breeds that are now out there spreading the word about rescue dogs. I'm actually sorry I even posted this now. Where are your happy faces/funny bones? Did you just watch the beginning and make some assumptions about gimmicks and designer dogs?
