  1. Hmmm, except didnt you say the PB is now registered as an amstaff (as in american staffy?) because in my experience all council are a bunch of DHs and will just look at the computer and say "uh the computer says its a staffy"
  2. Hmmm, apparently Jug isnt cute enough anymore Ive heard of puggles, which is a pugXbeagle, maybe these so called breeders got a bit over enthusiastic
  3. I think anyone who did join this forum with those ideas would soon change their minds as soon as they started reading about BYB and oodles, if they dont change their views they would be smart to keep their mouths shut lol
  4. You said it yourself, some dogs dont become accustomed to it, mine happens to love hers, but that is the reason why Im putting a lot of thought into getting one for my JRT, she pulls, but being a little terrier I can restrain her with her harness. As Ive said, Im not a big girl (adult, but not big) and I wouldnt have the physical strength to hold her back if she saw something she wanted to chase, as it is, we see birds, she is interested in the birds, but I talk to her and keep her back, she will learn that birds arent for chasing, you just watch them
  5. I hate people that just see dollar signs when it comes to breeding animals A girl I used to know, she was a total drop kick in my mind, but this topped it off She wanted a Great Dane, but couldnt afford the $1000 price tag, anyway she heard about a litter, went to take a look and fell in love with a girl, but as I said, she couldnt afford the price tag Well anyway a couple of weeks later she gets a call from the breeder, the girl isnt suitable to show for some reason (cant remember what it was) and they were willing to sell her the pup for $600 instead So of course she saw the dollar signs, and figured she can get the pup discounted, and breed her and sell the pups for $1000 a piece...never mind the fact that because she wasnt suitable to show it would also mean she shouldnt be bred...stupid girl, I never did find out if she got the pup
  6. It took 3 weeks before I was happy to clip the lead to Lexis GL, the first week she rubbed her nose, so I rewarded her when she ignored it, and I ignored her when she rubbed it, week 2, it only went on when we walked, so she associated the GL with going out, I clipped it on the way home because she was tired and didnt pay any attention to it. Week 3 I would clip it on from the beginning, it was only at obedience that she got too enthusiastic and I unclipped her, but since then she has been more than ok with it, as I said, she volunteers her nose for me to put it on her
  7. Same here  I use the gentle leader and love it, my girl does NOT fight it and never gets her neck or head pulled or tugged in such a way that it would injure her. It says in that article to see if the dog becomes happy and lively once the gentle leader comes off (meaning it kills their mental state), umm NO my girl does not react any different to the gentle leader being on or off.. that's cos I haven't abused her with it on! She has no issues with it AT ALL, so for some people it DOES work.. and some it doesn't. I think the anti halti people have to accept the people who like using them and use them properly and don't use them in any way that would injure their dog and let them be I think choker chains can be just as bad in the wrong hands, the yanking and jerking on the neck could be devastating, it's all in the way these tools are used. I LOVE not having to have sore hands from a puller and having to hear my dog choking on the end of a tight collar and I LOVE going on our walks now, we have fun and they are never negative, always positive I have a flat collar on her neck also so if she was to freak out or go mental in a situation where the gentle leader would be jerking on her face I would immediately grab the flat collar and contain her that way. Not that I have ever had to! Thankyou!! as I said, Lexi is enthusiastic, she loves having it on, it means she is going on and adventure, but she also has a flat collar on, and if she gets too excited (such as at obedience) I have unclipped her and clipped onto her collar, but the gentle leader stays on Perhaps gentle leaders are a bit better than Haltis, Ive seen haltis on dogs and they either arent fitted correctly, or they just look wrong on the dog, my gentle leader was fitted by my trainer and she has showed me how to resize it correctly, Ive never found a problem with my gentle leader
  8. you're right in her age, but at the moment she is very enthusiastic to put it on, she doesnt and has never really pulled (only when I walked her in a collar, I wanted to rectify that before she got too big, Im not a big girl, I dont want a puller), if she stops, I stop, I walk at her pace so there is no unnecessary strain on her or her spine. If it ever got to the point where she didnt want to put it on, or if she started refusing to work with it on it would come straight off
  9. I was feeding her in her crate, but she has always been like it, Ive tried clickering her in, same result. She is happy to spend time in it, when she gets locked in she just lays down, she doesnt stress in it, and never has...I dont know why she doesnt just walk in at bed time, except that she doesnt want to go to bed. I guess you could call it a *very* mild seperation anxiety, she usually has me in her sight, but then again on that note she is happy to spend time outside while im home and doesnt care that Im nowhere near her or in her sight
  10. This is why I got a gentle leader for my pup early, I used to just put it on her around the house, I didnt even clip a lead to it until she was so used to it she didnt even notice it. She volunteers to stick her nose in it because she knows it means she gets to go out, she doesnt pull at all or fight it. I was considering getting one for my JRT, but im not sure if it will be worth the $$$ as I dont know if she would tolerate it near as well as Lexi
  11. My pup currently enjoys being in the car, but she has only been on short trips to the park, training, the vet, all have been positive experiences for her Im going back to my home town for a visit, planning to leave really early on Saturday (like 2 or 3am) and its a 1400km journey, so it will take around 17 hours with stops, could be longer My other dog wont be a worry, she is a terror in the car so she will be getting a sedative, but I dont want to sedate the pup for a few reasons, one being I want her to know that the car will be an adventure, and that its good, and the second being that she is a pup and I dont want to medicate her if its not necessary I was planning on just giving her a light dinner the Friday night, then just offering her water throughout the trip, then no more food until we arrive, unsure if she will get car sick but so far there hasnt been any incidents so heres hoping Does anyone have any advice? I was thinking about getting some of those window socks for the back windows so they wont get so much sunlight, it might also make her sleep longer if she thinks its still night time How often should I stop? she is going well with her toilet training, but we havnt managed to associate the command to "Do wees" with the action yet. I dont plan on stopping for myself other than to get fuel, I just load the car with plenty of snacks for me so I dont need to stop for meals, I dont want to leave her in the car for too long without a break but I dont want to delay my arrival time any longer than I have to either, last thing I want is to hit skippy right at the end (Im heading out bush so its possible, hence the early leaving time)
  12. I was searching for something else and came across this thread, it has a few ideas in it that might work for you http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...p;hl=travelling
  13. Are you using a laptop? mine used to do that, turns out it was just my hand touching the touch pad when I was typing
  14. Wow, I just had a classic at the park today I was there alone, and I saw a lady come with what appeared to be a Golden Retriever, and a black Lab, my dogs went racing over and I went to say hello, I was saying to Lexi "Look Lex, a grown up Goldie!" anyway, the owner tells me he is actually a cross between a Lab and a Golden, and that his brother (same litter) was coming just behind her Look up, and a very Lab looking Golden X Lab is walking in, wasnt long before I noticed he wasnt desexed, the other two were. Anyway after a while his owner says something about how he doesnt know what 'it' is for, but he will give him another 12 months to see if he can find a female for him... Well at least he is looking for a decent girl by the sounds, but his boy is worthless as a stud...man I wish I had the guts to tell him that any cross breed dog should be desexed, and that any pure bred dog (like my two) who arent intended to be bred should also get desexed as soon as they are old enough What makes it worse is that I had a little rant about Oodles and he was agreeing with me in the fact that they are over priced mutts...
  15. Poor dear...sounds like its time for her to chat to her pharmacy and organise for them to make up those daily medication packs for her
  16. My 8 week old puppy held on most of the night from day 1, I was sleeping her in my ensuite (tiled floor lol) which is quite small, and because she wasnt messing in there I figured I might as well crate train her as she obviously saw that as her 'den' She would cry at me at about 1-2am and I would take her out, mostly she was just after attention though, so I soon got her out of that habit, within a week of getting her she was sleeping all night and holding on all night in the ensuite, so I got her a crate, she has only had one accident in there, but that way my bad, I slept in, and she had a sore tummy As for overnight crating, that is the only time Lexi gets locked in hers, she has free access to it through the day, which she is happy to do, but when it comes to bed time she doesnt like to go in, but thats only because she doesnt want to go to bed
  17. Ive looked into it a couple of times, but it wasnt for me a) the first time I lived in NSW, but not in Sydney b) I now live in Brisbane, but you need to have the dog with you for most of the day, and my job would only allow me to have the dog with me on occasion (I sometimes work on oncology wards at hospitals and there is that risk of infection for them) I think it would be very fulfilling, but it would be very hard to give the dog back at the end of the 12 months
  18. When I first got my Golden pup I told a lady Id just gotten a Golden Retriever...her reply was classic "oooh what colour?" *bashes head*
  19. I had the same problem with my puppy when I first got her, I used to say "ouch" in a really high pitched voice, replicating a dog yelping, that is telling her she is hurting me, in no time at all she had given up on chewing me and focuses on the toys
  20. Oh good, Im glad I didnt just go out and buy a bigger one for Lexi, I have the small one for my JRT and I use it on Lexi atm, but I was going to wait until she was bigger before I got another size, glad I waited, what is the coat king like? are the teeth just longer?
  21. I cant offer any suggestions sorry...but good luck! I have a similar problem with my JRT, no messing thank god, but she is a major stressor as soon as the car starts moving. Mine is 8yo, she is happy to jump in the car, but as soon as we start moving...OMG she thinks she is going to die
  22. I think its more for those who are just too far away from a vet, 14kms isnt tht far, Im talking about people way out bush who might have to travel a 100kms or more to get to a vet, as dog lovers Im sure we could all understand delaying the trip by minutes to try this treatment, the prognosis wouldnt be any better if you arrived at the vet in an hour and five minutes or just an hour
  23. Yes Ive heard of people giving their dogs high doses of vit C to treat snake bites, but it is only pre-vet care, good for people who are isolated and unable to get to their nearest vet quickly, giving the vit C doses gives you more time
  24. Ok thanks for that, Ill get something else tomorrow
  25. Hmmm, unsure if Im going to keep feeding chicken necks or not...tonight I discovered she is eating them whole! I forgot to defrost a pack, so I grabbed one out of the freezer (pack of 3) and sat them out to defrost, gave them their biscuits Later on tonight when they were defrosted I took the dogs out to their bowls, gave a neck to Lexi, went to throw the next to Tess so she wasnt missing out, and before Tess even got hers Lexi had already finished hers, she tried to get Tessas a couple of times before she realised I had another one, that one I held while she ate it, that way she could only chew on a bit at a time and made her eat it properly Does anyone think there will be a problem with the one she ate whole? Im guessing because its smooth, straight and reasonably bendy it will make its way through ok...could be interesting for her to get out the other end My silly silly puppy...need to teach her a bit of food refusal and respect I think, I already make her wait before I release her before she gets her food, but this is the first of the fresh food I have given her and she wasnt even a little bit polite, infact she nipped me a few times, I replied with a yelp and she realised she was biting me lol
