  1. Italmum Have you seen the black and tan Cavs? they are absolutely stunning
  2. I dont mind children coming to off leash parks, provided that they are supervised by their parents and ask before patting the dogs. I let kids play with my dogs so they can learn to treat these 'little people' differently, kids generally love both my girls because they think my JRT is funny when she plays fetch, and they love my GR because she is so cuddly What I dont like is when parents give their kids a ball to play with but expect you to keep your ball crazy dog away from them. Im sorry but if you give your kids a ball to play with put them on the other side of the fence, I bring my dog to the park to run and play with her ball, I bring my own but I cant help it if she thinks the kids running and playing look more fun than me. Mostly the kids end up playing with her but Ive had a couple of parents ask me to keep my JRT away from her kids, if parents are going to have that attitude then dont take them to an off leash park, if my dog was big and the kids were scared then of course Id take her away, but they arent scared of her, the parents just want to be a PITA
  3. All I can really suggest if find a breeder in your local area, even if they have no pups at the time being you can still get to know them, and let them get to know your kids, plus spending time with the breed will only help you train him/her. If you can build up a relationship with a reputable breeder you might be able to use them as a reference to get a pup off another breeder If I can suggest looking up crate training if you arent familiar with it, it gives the dog a place to go just to get away, that way you can teach your kids not to disturb puppy when its gone to its crate, Ive never crate trained a dog until I got my GR pup and I havnt looked back, it is great for toilet training as well...oh, and just make sure your kids know not to lock puppy in the crate, its not a jail Dont give up looking for a pup, you will have a much better chance of getting a younger one, but the right pup will come along
  4. I think they make a great team, they are just as low as one another...maybe good old octomom will get spayed out of the deal too...whats fair for one...
  5. Well we survived the trip today, Lexi was very good, she slept most of the way, it was only when I pulled up for a sleep she decided she wanted to play...silly girl
  6. She takes EVERYTHING out of their packets and puts them in little jars all over the house. Probably should be grateful she hasn't already taken the dog's medication (if that's what it is!) out of the bubble packs and put them in jars. Don't ask for an aspirin, you might end up with a dog worm pill. Does she have any reason in particular for doing that?
  7. I had one, didnt like it It is made out of elastic, so the dog has to work to open their mouth, my poor JRT was depressed when it was on, it didnt last
  8. You can get this spray called Bitter Bite from the supermarket, just the smell of that is enough to stop my dog chewing. You could also try chili sauce, or that nail bitter stuff
  9. like I said, if I had a dollar for every time, at least you were following advice of a professional though...so many people are self diagnosing themselves with coeliac these days and putting themselves on a gluten free diet and because they miraculously get better they decide it must be coeliac, go to any old quack and insist on the test, which will of course come back as negative, if the doctor was decent they would realise there could be any number of reasons why a gluten free diet would 'cure' them...lmao, sorry, end of my rant I promise Hope you find out why that boy of yours is suffering
  10. Sorry I dont have any advice for you, but just a precaution when you do go to the dermatologist, if he wants to order a blood test for any specific allergens (e.g for a grass) then he must have had contact with the allergen the vet is testing for, they are looking for antibodies and if he has had no access to the allergen then it might come back with a false neg If I had a dollar for every person who came to me for a blood test for coeliac disease just to find out they had been on a gluten free diet for X amount of weeks...they dont understand when I tell them they need to have gluten in their system to have any chance of possibly diagnosing coeliacs lol
  11. Gosh. What's wrong with the breeder? If this person who went to have a look and couldn't afford the price tag SHOULDN'T sold a pup anyway. It's not t just the purchase price, it's the ongoing costs of owning the dog. As we all know if we do it properly, it's not cheap. What happens if there are unforseen situations? No one can forsee what happens in the future. The more I think about it, I blame this breeder more and more. Probably sees the $ signs as well!!!!! Wouldnt surprise me in the slightest
  12. I think everybody needs to agree that everyone has had different experiences with head collars and leave it at that One of my dogs loves hers, the other I am considering getting one, but Huski has given me another option for her, Ill look into this trainers services when I arrive back in Brisbane after my holiday
  13. their tail is an extension of their spine...I wouldnt be straightening it by hand, it would be painful for one, and second you could do some serious damage
  14. Im GG85 on the Retriever thread, Im happy to stick with that lol Huski has given me details for her trainer, Ill look into her for Tess, as for Lexi Ill see how she goes tomorrow at the agility club, she has been on the GL for a couple of weeks now
  15. Did she give Baz some doggy condoms and a safe sex lesson? seriously
  16. Yeah Im in Bris Huski I havnt clipped her back onto her collar for a couple of weeks now, Ill see how she goes tomorrow when I go to her obedience lesson
  17. Lol, I wondered why it wouldnt accept goldengirl for my forum name :D If you guys have any suggestions on teaching her to walk by my side with just a flat collar be my guest, Im a first time big dog owner and I joined this forum to learn, but keep in mind when Im walking Im with a JRT who not only doesnt want to stop, she pulls, i use the GL because that keeps her back by my side Someone noted they are the same thing with a different name, from what Ive seen Haltis sit lower on their nose, almost pulling their nose down when they pull, a properly fitted GL sits right at the base of their nose, just below their eyes, still pulling on their face I admit, but I feel this one would be more comfortable than the Halti Huski, yes Im in Brisbane, Im a very new Brisbanite, I moved here in October
  18. Im packing their regular food for once we arrive and for the whole stay, and Ill be packing water from home for the trip I didnt think about off leash areas, Ill have to take a look and see what I can find Tess gets sedated for long trips because she stresses in the car, I got her when I was 16, too young to own a car and/or drive by myself, so she quickly learned that the car means she is going to the vet, because one of my parents had to drive us there, Ive never been able to get her out of that, she is happy to jump in the car, but as soon as we start moving she stresses out, although I am happy to try any suggestions you may have to offer She already holds her bladder all night, so I know she can hold it, I just dont want to make her hold it for too long lol, she is such a good puppy
  19. Happypaws both parties here were just getting their POV across, that is what a forum is for. I didnt feel that Huski and LC were trying to force me to switch, IMHO they seemed concerned for our dogs safety. I have seen haltis used wrongly, Id never do that to my dog, and Id like to say that if my dog ever gets to the point where it isnt working for her then Ill stop using it. One of the reasons why I do use it is because my JRT does pull, and because my pup walks side by side with her I dont want her learning to pull in some sort of competition with Tess, I have shortened Tessas lead and using my voice I keep Lexi by my side, but because Tess doesnt have her full length if Lexi tries to walk side by side with Tess, she isnt getting any contact with the GL
  20. Surely your SIL knows that breeding PBs is illegal...why would anyone get involved with that, even if the PBs owner is too ignorant to get her dog spayed when that is her legal obligation in order to keep a dog of her breed
  21. She will have her favourite teddy, and Ill bring a couple of other toys to change around so she doesnt get bored with just the one I think she is starting to learn to pee on command, I usually only catch her twice a day, the morning one and the before bed one, but I think it is *starting* to sink in She has a collar and name tag, and she is restrained in the car with one of those seat belt connectors so she cant jump out unless I let her off, I also have a pet hammock on the back seat so it is protected from any misses...and she cant access the seatbelts to chew those lol (brand new car...I dont want dog hair everywhere lol) Im still not sure on the feeding though, my parents recently made the trip with their dogs to bring my belongings up, and my JRT lol, and their Cav who doesnt usually get sick in the car did, and they didnt have much dinner the night before...maybe Ill just get a treat that she can eat slowly...do kangaroo tails usually go down slowly?
  22. Both my mums Cavs do it, sometimes after a poo, sometimes if not I figure...what do you do if your butt is itchy? they cant just reach around and have a little scratch can they?
  23. ...and people wonder why I only wanted a girl dog, lmao I hope he doesnt have his ermmm...special dreams? very often...for your sake
  24. A boxer at my obedience class has one of those, the husband seems to have a lot of trouble handling him, I figure the wife doesnt handle him because he is too strong for her
  25. She obviously has cute puppy syndrome, Id encourage her to join the forum, but while she is waiting to get her approval to post, id get her to do a lot of reading, because being able to read the threads and not reply in them is great for listening to others opinions But Im only posting here as a newbie myself
