  1. I grew up with cross bred dogs and never really had a preference. then I met an Australian cattle dog and it was love at first pat I wasn't in a position at that time however to own a working dog as my husband and I were living on a horse agistment property with no fences and whatever dog we got would need to be confined to a small area while we were at work. So we got ourselves two jack russells. I was NEVER a small dog person but we truly fell in love with the breed. They are such clowns and not 'little' dogs at all. They are big dogs in little bodies. They play and make us laugh, they are great companions and love to be 'couch potatoes' as well. We now have our own house and I was finally able to get my 'dream' cattle dog katie. I love her to bits and she comes with me pretty much where ever I go. She's a very loyal dog and the original velcro dog always being by my side. I feel complete now, but I must admit that I really have fallen in love with the JRT as well and think I will always have both in my life.
  2. Hopefully eventually his nails with start to grow in a more appropriate direction if they wear down on that angle from working. Hang in there......like the others said, look out for infection both for cause and while the nail is injured. I wouldn't be too concerned unless it just keeps happening all the time and makes him lame or causes infection. You can have nails removed but he will loose speed and grip through turns.
  3. This surgery has quite a high success rate. Does he have a button stitched to his eye? Hope he is recovering well for you, he sounds like a real sweet heart
  4. Thanks guys. We don't have human kids, so they really are OUR family
  5. Hi, firstly THANK YOU for adopting I would suggest running some bloods and that way you know exactly what she is lacking. It could be quite costly and time consuming trying to get to the bottom of the problem, and most regular Vets charge about $60 or so for a blood profile. Then you know what you are dealing with and can address the problem correctly from the start.
  6. The feed supplement you are thinking of is Biotin, however usually when dogs bend nails like that it has nothing to do with the strength of the nail itself. It's generally either just 'bad luck' or the nail is growing on a funny angle. And just like when you bite your lip, once you have done it once, you tend to do it again. You already mentioned the nails are short, I suggest keep them as short as possible and let the injured one heel. If it's the dew claw, you can have it removed.
  7. Echo the post above. there is a really good chance there is something up her nose. I would have it investigated sooner rather than later.(if it continues) A lot of pressure can build up from all the sneezing and cause damage.
  8. Sending lots of luck and healing vibes your way. I am sure Tango will be fine, but I understand how you feel. What exactly is wrong with his eye, and what surgery are they doing?
  9. still waiting for cute puppy photo........................ Oh, and I hear you too and share some of your pain.
  10. Too right, a bite is a bite indeed. If given the choice of placing an IV catheter in the small chihuahua (only used as an example here, I have absolutely nothing against the breed at all) or the grumpy looking Rotti at work....I'll actually choose the Rotti or mastiffx or Bull dog or whatever the case may be. Those little tackers are mighty fast and I have worn the scars from both types of dogs and the little ones do just as much damage given half a chance.
  11. hehe, yes, we often refer to her as a 'fruit bat' or 'the flying nun'
  12. Echo post above. I would be testing for cushings too.
  13. let us know how you go, and please keep us posted. Good luck !!
  14. I would be having him checked out by a vet for sure. This does not seem normal to me. Even if it's only for peace of mind.
  15. I've had a black eye from katie jumping up o the bed while I was still laying in it when my husband let her out of her crate in the morning. i went to duck for cover as she cam in at a million miles an hour, but she nose-butted me in the eye. I also have scratches down the front of my arms constantly from her trying to grab treats out of my hands during training sessions. but then they just blend in with my normal vet nursing scratched arms.
  16. Well done little Elbie ;) What a clever puppy.
  17. Red stuffing.....that's very...ehhm......realistic
  18. hehehe, shame you are in a different state or our husbands could entertain each other.
  19. well done to both of you. Gives little Katie and I something to aspire to. We are off to our first class next weekend as we have just had our final vaccination yesterday.
  20. Oh KB...we're two peas in a pod. Although I am sure there are many members addicted. hubby said he never sees me anymore. I am always on the 'forum' Between this and facebook, you can count me out for the night.
  21. Stuffed toy "Transplants" that's magical. You are giving me all kinds of ideas now, perhaps I can do some 'cross breeding'
  22. I have skimmed over this thread. I must admit I have not sat and read all of it closely. i do know the ACD has been put on the list and taken off again a few times over. Obviously a bit undecided about that one. can I just add from my own personal experience working with dogs of all different breeds and cross breeds every day, the ones that worry me the most and when I have been bitten have been the white fluffies of various breeds and x's), Chihuahuas and JRT's. I am NOT criticising these breeds at all, infact i have 2 JRT's myself and love them to bits, but they are about as far removed from the breeds in question as you can possibly get i would say.
  23. I don't know anything about this, but I do speak fluent german and English, so if you post the link to the article perhaps i can do a more accurate translation for you.
  24. do a search on the topic. There are a couple of threads on this with great advice and opinions.
