What is she trying to do, scare the pup into thinking it's falling off the table?! I have zero knowledge about shows/judges and what is acceptable handling, but that is clearly NOT. The poor dog. The owner looked a bit distraught, too. All I can say is, if she tried that on any of mine, especially Carl, she'd need facial reconstruction.
-
WOW, she looks almost pure Min Pin! (See sig - just like my red girl. ) My MP is food aggressive... She is fed all meals in a separate room. I think she likes her privacy anyway. I watch them like a hawk while they eat, don't trust them not to wolf everyone else's food!

Hopefully she is OK.

Have I Committed The Ultimate Sin?

Maybe, like Max, she was having an off day? I dunno, but she really freaked me out! Maybe you should take her in for a vaccination! -
Have I Committed The Ultimate Sin?
halfthewords replied to Cuchulain's topic in General Dog Discussion
What was with the breeder's reaction? Dogs have off days, it has nothing to do with whether or not they share your bed! Like others have said, as long as it is your invitation to him, there's no issue with sharing your bed. In a pack, dogs sleep near each other. I am house/dogsitting at the moment; my 2 are allowed on the bed and the two resident dogs sleep in the room across the hall in their own beds. Mostly because one of them is a clinger (), but that is their normal routine with me and they know they aren't allowed on the bed. Mischa is slightly possessive of her space with dogs who aren't Carl and for that I won't invite anyone else up. My dogs have shared my bed for years, there are zero leadership issues. -
"professional" Dog Walkers Walking Muzzled Dogs...
halfthewords replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
We've had fox bait dropped in an area where I regularly walk my dogs. One of them is a gobbleguts, they are all kept on lead but as an extra precaution, she is muzzled. I see many unmuzzled greyhounds at the dog park. My sister and I rode our horses in a local showground which is available to horseriders and dog owners at any time, and our horses were chased by greyhounds without muzzles. My horse kicked at one of the dogs and thankfully missed, but if he'd struck how could he be at fault? He and the mare had bite marks on their hocks when we checked back at the stable. It's worrisome when I go to my local beach and see "dog walkers" with 7 or 8 dogs in the back of a truck or van. There is one woman who has decent enough control but all are large dogs and only respond because she carries food with her. I don't know how you can keep tabs on that many dogs at once. I have enough trouble with my 4, and one is leashed 24/7. -
How Fussy Is Your Oh Pertaining To Dogs Inside The House
halfthewords replied to Moselle's topic in General Dog Discussion
The way these threads get derailed. As for talks about Moselle being a 1950s housewife, stereotyping much? I'm currently single (uh, sort of) and live with my family (parents, 19yo sister and 15yo brother). My previous OH was a bit of a grot with the dogs - more than happy to have them on the bed though! When we shared beds, I put my foot down at one dog, because Carl stays in one position all night, doesn't snore or fart (much ) and doesn't get hair through the bed. Mischa prefers sleeping in her own bed. His two dogs (chi and foxy x) are INSISTENT about sleeping in the bed but they squirm all night and drive me crackers! So we compromised, the chi was allowed on the bed but the foxy had to sleep in his bed on the floor. I like my space when I sleep, he likes to have the dogs practically clinging to him. His choice! My OH fed the dogs from the table, too, which I don't disagree with, but I at least make them work for a treat and would rather give them leftovers with dinner than feed them off my plate. When I'm on the couch, Carl sits BESIDE me rather than ON me. Unless I lie down, he waits to be invited up and he is allowed to sleep on my back. Mischa occasionally wants a cuddle but generally sits on her stack of pillows. Scout and Neo have to be TOUCHING YOU EVERYWHERE when they're on the couch which personally I can't stand! He also lets them climb everywhere in the car including the front which I find to be dangerous. I'm house/dogsitting this month so when he returns they will have manners, god damnit. -
Best Breed For Your Average First Time Dog Owner
halfthewords replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would say a Bichon Frise, so long as grooming requirements are understood. They are a beginner's breed in every other sense - easy to train, intelligent, don't have that small dog 'yappy' quality, playful, generally healthy and extremely good with other dogs. At least both our Bichons have been. -
Mine don't go (too) crazy if they miss a day, but I try not to. We do fetch every day anyway with one of the soft toys - that gets Carl's excess energy out. Mischa will chase a ball or play chasies with me. Jag throws his own toys around and entertains himself. I'm dogsitting my best friend's 2 dogs for the month... The foxy is a nut. I worked 12 hours today and picked them up on my way home, then took them + my two to the park. Threw a ball for 30 mins to tire the bugger out. I initiate zoomies on wet days. That gets them going, and we do some clicker training. That said, Carl and Mischa are generally happy to lounge around. But if I haven't showered yet, I take them to an offleash area where they can run. Both love wet grass! And we have raincoats and plenty of warm towels!

Pet Urine Odours In Carpets - How To Get Rid Of Them
halfthewords replied to bernym's topic in General Dog Discussion
Baking soda has always worked on our carpets when the dogs were pups. -
I am only 20 but I am covered in scars, from both dogs and horses! Carl digging on my face in the morning because I must've mumbled in my sleep and rolled over. THAT woke me up! He also launches at my nose with teeth when we're playing - if it's rough play he goes all out. Mouthes my hands, STANDS ON MY HAIR :@ I've been run over during his zoomies. Multiple scars on my hands/legs/neck from breaking up fights at work (dog shelter). I also take on the abused dogs as my projects, as well as groom the more difficult one, so getting bitten isn't a question of if, but when. I've had my nose and jaw slammed into more times than I can count. Bloody noses and split lips galore. :D

We have 4 - two smallish (one very chunky/muscular though) and two very small (Miniature Pinschers). Food: my sister and I both work as vet nurses so we get discounts on dry food. We buy one of the big science diet bags and that lasts us probably 2-3 months. Most nights each of them get a handful of biscuits topped with something - sometimes mince or raw leftover chicken. As far as supplements go, Carl and Cleo get a handful of psyllium husks because of anal gland issues. I buy kangaroo mince about once a week for Carl and Mischa to have with their dinner on alternating nights. I get cheap human grade sardine tins from Aldi, and they get an egg once a week or so. I buy pig ears in bulk and give them out once a week so they last a while. I do the same with bones and stash them in the freeze so parents don't complain. My mum buys chicken bones from the butcher fairly cheap, and that's breakfast! Bills: All very healthy, no vet services needed apart from yearly vaccinations. Carl had a tick in Jan 09 and everyone got a dental last year, but cost almost nothing due to discounts. I have been thinking about insurance for my two, just because it seems like more and more people I know are having accidents with their dogs and forking out a ton! Bedding: Yeah right. Carl and Jag sleep in me and my mum's beds, Mischa and Cleo sleep wherever they feel like - human beds during winter, their own during summer. We have an old doona in front of the heater that they lay on. Free access to all couches/beds/furniture. I have a nice pink bed with a fluffy blanket in my wardrobe for Mischa - she likes having her own den. :D The bed is huge for her but sometimes she shares. Carl spends most of his time asleep under my desk, so he has a big brown cushy bed under there. He and Mischa share if the wardrobe doors are shut! Walking: Generally, I walk my 2 on my own every day. They get an hour minimum, usually 2 hours when I have the time. Weekends they get over 2, as well as training and visiting other houses. My mum walks Jag every day for an hour unless she is away (travels frequently for her work), then I take him with me. He can't be trusted off lead yet which is annoying! My sister usually takes Cleo but occasionally I walk all 4 at the same time. I try to incorporate swimming and sand as much as I can (Mischa has a luxating patella) because it makes everyone do zoomies. Usually we walk for an hour and then finish off with the beach. They get offleash time every day. We never go to the same place 2 days in a row.

To the OP, good on you for coming up with the best solution in a sticky situation. Akitas are an amazing breed and just like every breed, of course they can be raised incorrectly, undersocialised, etc. I do not think that is the case with this one! My Min Pin copped it from our Bichon once after years of 'narking' at her. The old girl snapped at her once, clearly meant business, and that was it!

Not for me it isnt eta and my name isnt Rover This is funny For the record I can't stand him and think that the show is a joke. They have an opportunity to educate and inform the general public on many dog/animal related issues and instead they would prefer to go along with common misconceptions and laugh about real and serious behaviour problems because it entertains the masses and makes money for all involved in the show. However, I WILL continue to watch the show, partly because it is morbidly facsinating (the car crash theory :D ) and because I enjoy getting on here and 'discussing' it with others. Happy watching everyone I like to refer to it as 'trainwreck syndrome'. I'm a vet nurse, and the show is missing so many elements of what veterinary practice is truly like that I just can't take it seriously. But tit for tat!

If Your Dog Was A Band Or Pop/rock Artist
halfthewords replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Carl would be Alice Cooper. Mischa would definitely be Pink - tons of attitude! -
That video of Elbie is priceless! I'm going to look into this, though I suspect all my lot do is sleep.

My strongest bond is with my first rescue dog, Carl. He was extremely fear-aggressive when I met him, yet for some reason attached himself to me the first time I met him at work. That was three years ago and we've been inseparable since. He won't have bar of anybody else. While I am very flattered, it makes doing anything without 'velcro' dog quite hard. One of our Min Pins was bonded strongly to my mother until the above dog joined our pack. Since then, she is the third member of 'my' pack. She will go to other family members for cuddles occasionally, but she is always on alert for my voice. She's such a headstrong little thing, too! The other two have their own 'people.' Cleo lives for my sister, and Jag loves everyone but he sleeps in my mum's room and spends most of his time being her shadow.

Have you ever driven past a car crash? Don't really want to look, but can't not look either. And let's face it, so much of what is said and done on that show is a great big pile up! @Spikespuppy - My Dobe also will eat a tablet but as if you would do it like that with a snarling dog that you don't really know. There is no way in hell that any person that has an brain would even bother trying. He is a show pony. I need to get the laughs out of it if nothing else!

Well that's good to know they are genuinely interested in the animals, and the stupid things they say and do arent their fault - the producers call the shots on all that crap to make it more interesting for the target viewers, which is why most people on here cant stand the drivel. I mean the whole thing with the chi - you can just hear the producers saying it - rev the little land piranha up so it looks really good for the silly old bitches at home who want to see Fabio hold up his finger and show blood blood blood. Then you can hear the collective sigh from the old girls - Nawwwww Fabio my darling, I'll fix that war wound for you I should become a tv producer. I am not defending his stupid behaviour but more the fact that I really believe they are sincere in their love for animals. I understand that the stupid things Chris does and says calls his credibility into question time and time again, no doubt about that, but the fact is I still do believe he is a genuine animal lover. Lots of genuine animal lovers do some stupid things with their animals and and say stupid things about them, but unfortunately he does them on national television probably at the behest of the producers to boost the ratings. In the process of doing so he conveys the wrong message out there and opens himself to ridicule by the likes of us dol members and more animal savy people, but I still believe both he and his ditzy offsider are genuine animal lovers. and that unfortunately is how disinformation is spread. to the detriment of the animals and those who believe what they see and hear. Agreed. I personally think he's a moron - a well-meaning one, perhaps, but a moron all the same. Particularly in regards to the breed hysteria he promoted with some pit bull issues a while ago. The Lisa woman seems like a complete twat. I've heard her promote crossbreeds like "spoodles"; she owns two herself. Both of them make me roll my eyes. He's gross to me. 'Course, that could be the fact I'm a lesbian speaking. The episode where they went to Bali (or Fiji) made me laugh something chronic. Surfing when you're supposed to be on a veterinary mission? REALLY? To each their own, I guess.

Are they of a similar size? And what breeds? Most dogs will adjust their strength and volume of play when it is with smaller dogs. My two boys (a Bichon and a staffy/terrier mix) sound like they're starting world war III when they play! The growling and 'talking' sounds like it's a fight but they are just so busy rough and tumbling they don't notice much else. Or care about who hears. Having said that, Carl (terrier x) also plays with my best friend's Chihuahua and my own very delicate Min Pin girl, and he is extremely gentle. He modifies play depending who is on the other end. And that is on top of the daily 1 or 2 hours of exercise he gets.
-
Mischa and Cleo are accomplished lizard hunters, as well as anything smaller than them that enters our yard (rats, mice, birds, etc). ;) Dogs will be dogs, especially vermin hunters! My terrier x is forever trying to catch our cockatiels. I think he stalks them out of fascination rather than as a prey item. :D

I only take treats to our local (now unleashed dogs prohibited) oval because it is unfenced and Jag is easily distracted. There are rarely dogs there. The treats ensure I get the dog back because he'd prefer those over chasing a rabbit any day! I would never take treats into a dog park as such where there will be large numbers of dogs, having seen how some dogs in the shelter I work at respond to food in the presence of others. A food aggressive dog sometimes attacks over seemingly nothing, others feel they are resource guarding. Mischa is FA and she is fed separately, and never given treats around our other dogs. I think as long as you are careful about who is noticing you have treats, you should be fine. Of course, dogs have a very good sense of smell.

I can't go to get petrol without coming home to a welcome like I've been away for YEARS! The Min Pins tended to snub us during our annual holiday to Queensland, but the Bichons were always glad to see us. I haven't been away for longer than 2 days since I got Carl (3 years - due to his fear aggression) and he is hysterical whenever I get in. I hate being away from the dogs anyway! I have a friend visiting from the U.S. for a month while I am housesitting, and I anticipate this will be one person he likes. Apart from my ex-boyfriend, who he absolutely adores. I'm glad we're on a good basis so Carl still gets playdates!

Good on you, Sheridan!
