  1. good luck with the slashing we have a large causeway with head high weeds and grass with a chainwire fence then 2ft wide strip of grass next to a bike/ walking path.the snakes love it they can find food in the long grass then come out thru the fence to bask on the path or on the strip of grass,I rang council and they have been great, mowing and wipper snipping the grass strip but the water board wont slash the grass on their side of the fence this has been left to the local fire bugs who delight in setting fire to it.There is sure to be a dog or person bitten soon as they walk along the path as the snakes are hemmed in between the fence and the path. Its the same with the dog park with tall grass right up to one fence.
  2. I have just started using flygon by vetsense works well but had trouble with the spray nozzle blocking up so I used one from an empty windex ''after flushing with water'' it is oil based and does stain a bit but can be sprayed on a chux and wiped on dogs face as well, the flies dont seem as bad around here this year, even in the bush, so walks have been quite pleasant
  3. Thanks again for the replies it looked good in the testimonials on the webb site but then you dont know if they are fabricated or genuine, so I will order some asap,he isnt bad for 13 but I would rather get in early before it gets worse. cheers, will let you know how he goes
  4. Thanks for the reply Loli have you used any other treatments prior to this I am using joint guard at the present for my 13yr old boxer he has improved but I would like to try something with the green lipped mussels.

  7. There is provision in SES guidelines and ADF when assisting emergency services, for domestic animals, but the priority is human life 1st,where if its a case of taking animals and not knowing if there will be time or resources to get other people to safety a hard decision has to be made. As for predicting flood heights this relies on monitoring levels upstream and estimating how much water is likely to enter as run off further down this isnt an easy task, how many could estimate how long it would take to fill a bath by watching the water come out of the tap? This is probably the worst flood since the SES was formed and with the earlier flooding making it even harder to estimate. there will be a lot of lessons learnt both by emergency services and the people living in flood prone areas as in the case of bushfires where there has been a lot of work put in for evacuation plans in remote limited access areas, you would be surprised how many residents in bushy properties thought they will be OK when the RFS and SES did a door knock advising these people. The SES has been preparing ,upgrading boats introducing more training in floodboat, swiftwater awareness, and technicians so that there are more trained volunteers available, this shows in the amount of rescues performed and the fact that nearly all the fatalities were caused by people ignoring warnings and trying to cross flooded causeways. We can only hope that there isnt a repeat of this size in the future.
  8. add elastic band not quite passed out but good humour for the toddlers watching Mac trying to do a self extraction including rubbing on ground etc I found a new way to make him walk backwards but luckilly removed easily with no missiles attached. I thought balls would be right up on the list with male dogs
  9. Ahh boxers what is it about them the first time we took Mac to kurnell he lapped up heaps of sea water then when we stopped for petrol released the torrent, luckily we have a waggon and he was on a plastic backed travell rug which I managed to pick up by the corners like a hammock and deposit in the garden then a wash down with the watering can and all was well. After that he hasnt drunk any but we take a travel bowl and cold water with us.we always give the dogs a drink and a long walk after their swim to let things clear if needed
  10. Its great to see how dogs will interact with different dogs. This morning I took the dogs for a walk and met up with a neighbour who has a approx 4mth gsd girl, she is very shy and her owner asked if we could introduce the dogs,I decided to keep our staffy (Ella) back as she is full on friendly and might spook the shy dog,and let her come up to my old boxer(Mac) everything went great then she went over to Ella who was laying there chewing a stick.I was waiting for her to start jumping all over the gsd but instead she just lay calmly reached out with her nose sniffed and wagged her tail, you could see the sense of calm come over the gsd who then lay down in front of her wagging her tail like best mates, then to my surprise Ella offered her, her stick which I could not believe as she is totally obseesd with sticks and if Mac has 1 will grab it off him even if she has 1 of her own.The owner was so pleased with her reaction and now wants to let them have a run together in the leash free area later on today
  11. has anyone used techniflex? arthritis treatment would be interested in any info and if its as good or better than other clucosamine formulas
  12. If she is definitly dog friendly you could talk to your neighbours and get references in case there is contact from the council, chances are the couple will cool down by the time they get home. This can happen to anyone and if they were observant they should have seen your dog was friendly,I get a fair few small dogs charging out of gates but they are usually all fluff and bluff.I can tell straight away by my dogs attitude if they are friendly or not after all they understand the lingo. My main concern in these cases is the other dog running in front of a car, which happened to our neighbours german short hair pointer,....dog on other side of road, unlocked screen door,bus..., any way hope everything is ok and nothing comes of it,no news is good news

    Any Advice?

our now 15mth staffie went to puppy school at our vets now the only problem is keeping her still, the vet says the graduates make the worst patients and would rather have them quivering in fear than jumping around wanting to play,as the previous replies say he needs some good experiences there,is he ok with the receptionist, or is the vet the only one there?
  14. was that the one filmed in the brindabella ranges?
  15. one method I have found works is when the pup starts mouthing put your thumb over the top of the nose and press down enough to stop them breathing through it and press your fingers against the roof of the mouth this is very uncomfortable to them and they release quickly, when they do then praise, if they try to mouth again say no and repeat, this has worked with all our dogs (boxers and staffies) and also friends and relatives' dogs, others may disagree but I find this a fairly gentle discouraging way.
  16. Yes Katrina ''bad choice of words'' people had plenty of time to act and info but there was a fair bit of complacency, the previous floods were largely a result of water moving down the system and I think as a lot of the peaks didnt eventuate some people didnt react this time, with, these floods there was a larger area affected in a shorter time which left less evacuation areas and stretched the rescue services as well, there were probably other factors such as jobs etc which may have stopped them getting out early, who knows? A few years ago there was a massive storm predicted to hit sydney everything was on standby but then a slight change in weather patterns kept it out to sea, you should have heard the ridicule dished out then.
  17. Im not sure if it has been mentioned previously but there is a low supply of aviation fuel, which would be why the choppers are trying to get as many people out as fast as possible. The SES were advising people with pets to evac early and were taking them on boats but it has got to the stage where the larger punts arent safe in the faster water so chopper is the only safe way. this is a catastrophe and happened so fast that early evac time was limited and we can only hope it doesnt happen again in the future. Dont be too hasty critisising the SES and emergency services as a lot of them lost their property as well and were out helping others when they could have been looking after themselves 1st
  18. sell his jet ski to pay for the vet bills for starters, ban him from ever driving one for life ,parade him down the middle of surfers with a sandwich board on newyears eve when theres heaps of people around who just might want to take revenge for the swan.comunity service cleaning out cages at shelters anything to humiliate the scum.
  19. I know how to punish them but the hard thing is teaching the elephant to wear stillettos, it would be also nice to name and shame the herbal medicine makers that use the rhino horn and tiger body parts.
  20. there was something similar a few years ago where a dog had an abcess that contained a wooden skewer which had been swallowed and had actually woked its way out of the stomach and up out through the rib cage, since I saw that I make sure the skewers are kept separate, break the tip off snap them in pieces and straight in the bin away from the dogs.
  21. she could try another dog which is a good traveller as a companion on some really short drives so the pup can gain some reasurance ,also get some one to meet her in the car on the way home from a long walk when it is tired, short trips to an interesting place so that it looks to where its going to take its mind off the travel might also help, good luck and keep trying dont be negative.
  22. so your saying when theyre trained theres crowds of people and numerous other distractions around them, if so thats good and shows they were thinking ahead.
  23. Its most likely a redirect set up where the call is directed to the nearest help available similar to the SES where the one number is called and directed to the nearest unit but don't quote me.
  24. That's always a possibility and it was on one of the crappy current affairs shows but it was pretty distressing to watch and unmistakable. Today tonight also ran a story saying that the State Emergency Service were one of the organisers which is incorrect (only involved in blocking off streets and errecting safety barriers for council) so they dont always get the facts right. But I still disagree with the races as its not a safe or natural environment and even if trained they wouldn't be used to all the noise in the actual race,so would panick.

    *sigh*

Looking at the owner or should I say ''possessor'' of these dogs and also the aquaintances you could assume that these dogs are subjected to all sorts of idiotic behaviour, the victim could have been similar to one of their tormenters. Theres also the fact that they were running loose over a period of time where they were seeing a bigger area as their territory to guard,so IF the bystanders who stated they had been loose frequently HAD reported them why weren't they impounded previously, it seems like no authorities knew of them beforehand. I can agree withe police chasing them up to a point because if they had got away this moron would not have come forward and the dogs could have attacked someone else with worse results.
