  1. Hi Dobesrock, how is it pronounced? It's pronounced 'Ash-er-on'. The 'c' seems to through everyone off
  2. Will be going to visit Simi on Saturday morning. I will post pics later that day, but until then here is one that the breeder took today (it was taken with her phone so not the best quality)
  3. Not a fan of it myself, but each to their own. I try to have names that are a little unusual or different and that I haven't heard before. Although in saying that I often hear of a pet called that after I've already decided that's what their name will be. I must admit Acheron is a good one, nobody seems to know how to pronounce it. When we were at the vets recently the nurse and the vet both said "Ack-eron?" I have had people not believe that he would answer/respond to a name like that, but he does :)
  4. I had Acheron castrated a couple of months ago. He is a almost 2 year old Doberman and I would have left him entire except that we are expecting a new pup in month and she will remain entire (for the time being anyway) and as we live in suburbia I didn't want him carrying on when she is in season or any possible accidents to occur. I would not have had him done any sooner than I did, based on the advise of his breeder and my own beliefs on the matter. Personally I would have preferred for him to remain entire, even though he would never have been bred from, but this just makes it easier for us and our situation right now. There have been no changes to his personality and no physical changes either.
  5. I have 2 kids and they have no input into the dogs at all. Like someone else said, the dogs are mine and I was the one who wanted each and every one of them and am prepared to care for them. The kids love the dogs and will play, cuddle and sometimes sleep with one of them but that's really it. I made the mistake of getting cat's for my eldest daughter (who is about to turn 13) and although she loves them, she needs to be reminded constantly to feed them and clean out the litter trays. Never again! I've told her that when she leaves home she has to take all of them with her.
  6. I've got 3 dogs (used to have 5) and will be getting number 4 in just over a months time and I have never had problems with the dogs bonding with me. All of them prefer to be with me over each other, although they do get along and like each other, I am definitely more important to them.
  7. Acheron - head tilts and raised ears and then lost interest. Barkley - raised ears and came from another room to investigate, and then lost interest. Flash - Not a lot of interest initially but when I played the group howling and barking she started barking and went outside to find them
  8. I miss living down there so much sometimes. I used to go every year. We (Sarge, my old Dobe and I) used to do the flyball demos with our club. It was always lots of fun and heaps of stuff to look at.
  9. Acheron - Smashmeron, The Boofhead Flash - Flashy, Flassy Barkley - Mummy's boy The 2 little ones also get called 'the whippy snappys' and sometimes when we are calling all 3 dogs we just yell out 'where is 1,2 &3?'
  10. Barkley is always inside when no one is home. Acheron is always outside, unless the weather is bad then we put Barkley in our room and let Acheron have the rest of the house, Flash takes turns at staying with the boys, mostly outside but sometimes in. When we are home they can choose where they want to be via the doggy door :D
  11. I grew up with Dobermans and they have always been my heart breed. There is no other breed that can compare with a stunning looking Dobe . Now, however I have come to the conclusion that ATM another Dobe is not the best option for our family as both OH and myself work full time and he is away for months at a time throughout the year (Army) and Acheron requires alot of exercise so our next puppy will be a Australian Bulldog. Much more laid back and not needing anywhere near as much exercise. I also had to let OH get his choice this time round as he allowed me to get Acheron even though he would have preferred a British Bulldog (not ideal for Darwin, hence the reason we are getting an Aussie from a local breeder).
  12. I ride my bike almost every day with a Doberman alongside :D I've ridden past cops and council rangers and I've never had any of them stop and tell me I can't do it, although to be honest it might not be illegal up here I don't know I've also notice that nobody wears bike helmets up here and the cops don't do anything about that either. Regardless, I'd do it anyway as it's the only way to give Acheron enough physical exercise to keep him happy. Edit because I can't spell :D
  13. Not entirely sure yet :) . From what I've read and been told they have to have had there own registry/controlling body for a minimum of 15 years and any dogs/pups have to be 5th generation or more to be accepted and registered by ANKC. At the moment 6th generation pups are being born and I think the ABS is only a few years away from the 15 year mark. Obviously there is more to it than that but it is getting closer. I didn't realise until recently that there are actually 2 different registries. The other one (ABA) is a little different in that they are still using BB's to breed with and I'm not sure if becoming recognised by the ANKC is what their main aim is . I have not done as much research in to them but Google is a great start to check out both.
  14. Simi is an Australian Bulldog (or as they are now officially called an Australasian Bos Dog). Not a breed recognised by ANKC yet, but hopefully not too far off that (hence the name change) and she is registered with the Australian Bulldog Society from a registered breeder. Pups were all adorable and the mum is gorgeous and has a personality to match! ETA Simi is a girl. Here she is letting her (very, runt of litter) little brother sleep on top of her.
  15. I paid $1500 for Acheron only 2 years ago and would pay it again happily. My first dobe cost me $200. It was the best $200 I've ever spent in my life, he was the most amazing dog. As a kid we always had Dobes and I'm sure that back then my dad would not have paid more than a few hundred dollars for a pup.
  16. Going to meet pups and mum on the weekend, very excited! Will post pics afterwards.
  17. I mix mine with minced chicken carcass from Leonards. It's only $2.50 per kg and it has meat, bone, offal and cartilage in it and it is fresh. I buy about 8kg at a time and put them in the freezer. I have tried roo meat but my dogs hate it and will only eat out of desperation! I don't mind the smell of the VAN and my dogs love it, I reckon they would eat it without the mince added! My dogs don't have any skin or allergy issues and have always looked good, but they look amazing on VAN and the Dobe is so shiny you need glasses to look at him in the sunlight
  18. I have told her about the cost of a c section and also about how risky it is to breed dogs that are so small, but at the end of the day all she knows is that she purchased 2 unregistered pups (the breeder of her first pup said they were a registered breeder but that they didn't register their pups anymore because there was no point because they were too small to show )from people who seem to have produced these 'teacup' dogs with little to no effort or money spent and they have made money off selling them ($1500 for the first pup and $1000 for the second) and she assumes that she can do the same. She is not mean or uncaring, just uneducated. Despite how many times I have explained to her that there is no such thing as a 'teacup' anything when people ask her if her dogs are one she says yes. It's very frustrating for me and I will keep giving her my opinion on the matter and hopefully she can be convinced before it's too late.
  19. We are expecting our new pup to come home in about 7-8 weeks time. I posted a few months ago about getting a new Dobe puppy but unfortunately that didn't end up working out and after some thought I decided that I shouldn't be selfish and our next pup should be the breed that my OH wants. So, we are getting a Australian Bulldog (I know, not a 'recognised' breed, but the breeder is registered with the ABS and pups will be registered). OH has always wanted a BB but as we live in Darwin it is almost impossible to find a breeder who will allow a pup to come up here and even if we found one who was happy for us to have a pup we would have to drive to pick it up as Qantas won't fly BB's and most breeders wouldn't allow it anyway. We are getting a bitch and her name will be Simi. She was born on 2 January and has 2 brothers and 2 sisters. We don't yet know which pup is ours and the breeder is keeping one of the bitches herself, but she has sent me pics and they are so adorable! Hopefully next week we are allowed to go and meet the pups (hands off visit only, just to have a peek) and meet mum and the breeder. I'll take heaps of pics and post them ASAP :D
  20. So I told her to take pup to vet as it could be something serious and it should be checked out quickly and she said she will so all is good there. I also told her that if the pup has skin allergies/problems then she shouldn't breed from it as it can be passed on to the pups. She loves her dogs and doesn't want to hurt them or lose them but she is young and inexperienced and has no idea of what is involved in breeding apart from ending up with some cute tiny puppies to sell. Fortunately I only see her at work, we don't socialise outside of work (she is mid 20's, single, likes to party, I'm early 30's, married with kids and boring as hell ), however I think I'm the only person she knows that has any kind of a clue about dogs and I haven't given up on convincing her NOT to breed the dogs yet.
  21. Thanks guys, I have already suggested the vet, but will tell her again and maybe with a sense of urgency this time. She already has a male Chi (who, although looks fairly small to me, she is disappointed at how 'big' he has grown) with whom she plans on breeding to this new puppy. I have advised her against it and explained why she shouldn't do it but she is fairly determined to 'make cute babies' with her dogs. I have been telling her whelping horror stories in the hopes that it will scare her off doing this but I'm sure she will do it anyway. Sigh.........If she was a close friend I would have to distance myself from her as this really bothers me but I only see her at work a couple of days a week and at least she tells me about this stuff and I can try to help the dogs out.
  22. Hi all, I have a friend who has recently purchased a Chi puppy from interstate and she has started losing hair from her ears and legs. Pup is approx 13 weeks old, female, black in colour (not sure what, if any issues there are with colour in Chi's). Her skin is not flakey or irritated and there is no rash, just this fairly substantial hair loss. Pup is active and alert and otherwise seems to be in good health. I will advise her to talk to the breeder, but I have a feeling that the 'breeder' in this case is one of those that breeds the elusive Tea Cup Chi and sells them unregistered .(I have talked to her about the fact that there is no such thing and also about the importance of buying a dog from a good breeder but she couldn't see past the size issue and wanted the smallest dog possible). Any ideas????
  23. Doberman (duh!) British Bulldog Afghan Hound (in full show coat) Pointers Bull Terriers There are many more breeds that I think are stunning to look at though, not just those 5.
  24. I voted the top one - yes, I let my dogs lick me, yes, occasionally they lick my face and yes I sometimes allow them to lick at a scratch. I wouldn't let them lick an open, infected wound (it would hurt and the idea of the dog licking pus or something makes me feel ill, yuck). To be honest my dogs are not really interested in licking wounds anyway, they like to have a sniff of them and then they move on. Everyone in our house 'kisses' the dogs, as in we kiss their noses and allow them to give us a little lick. We also let them lick our dinner plates when we're done with them and have been known to share an ice cream or some other type of yummy treat occasionally :D . So far, this has not caused any of us to get a disease or die ;)
