  1. Everything is kept in covered containers in the fridge here. No juices dripping on anything. With a frost free fridge, anything left uncovered dries out and is inedible. Irrespective of your idea of food hygiene, no one has ever suffered food poisoning here or needed to spend half the night in the toilet ;) It's common sense to eat food when it's fresh or as fresh as you can. Fruit and vegies are kept in cool rooms for long periods of time so unless you grow your own, they're not so fresh when you buy them. It is quite safe to keep food products in a fridge set at the correct temperature. I don't eat meat but those in my family who do haven't ever come to any harm. They don't like meat defrosted in the microwave because they say it alters the texture. BTW that ad said to defrost meat in the fridge not leave it to defrost on the kitchen bench. Dunno what the Great Dane has to do with it though .
  2. Thanks for the info. I probably haven't killed anyone yet by leaving those things in because I defrost in the fridge, never the microwave.
  3. Really? I didn't know we were supposed to remove those things before defrosting. I've always defrosted with them in the bottom of the tray. I haven't killed anyone off yet How did you find out that they need to be removed before defrosting? They should come with a warning on the pack if they are dangerous....please educate me about them.
  4. She's just a little dog isn't she? How about leaving the door open just enough for her to fit through, then she can come and go as she likes. There will be no need for her to scratch at the door and she'll probably lose interest in doing it because she won't be gaining attention for the behaviour... as well as driving you nuts.
  5. Another in favour of Fido's White and Bright. I used it on my Tri coloured Cavalier and the white is really a brilliant white. I've tried a few of the others but Fido's is the winner. I use Aloveen shampoo and Leave In Conditioner for the other dogs. They're all black and tan.
  6. I'm so sorry Tilly. By ending his suffering you showed your love for him. He was beautiful. RIP sweet Rotty boy.
  7. My big dogs get 2 heaped dessert spoons of Jalna fat free yoghurt every night before bed with their goats milk. The small dogs get 1 spoonful.
  8. Yep dogs and cats are lactose intollerant and milk tends to give them the runny poos If it's occasional or it you water it down a bit then I don't see it being a problem. Better yet you can buy pet milk or even lactose free milk for people.Longlife or cold :p SOME dogs are lactose intollerant. Not all dogs.
  9. Incontinence isn't painful, the dog is unaware that it's happening. However when they do discover it they're not happy about it. House trained dogs don't like to mess inside. Incontinence can be easily managed with medication, it sure beats the smell of stale urine in the house. If your Nan is a bit reluctant to take her dog to the vet I think I would be pushing the UTI aspect and emphasising that UTI's are painful. She might be more inclined if she thinks her dog could be in pain.
  10. My Rottie girls will mark whilst walking and do the turf scratch as well. You need to get a sample of urine from the dog and take dog and the sample to the vet. It sounds like incontinence to me but it could be a UTI. If it is a UTI then it's a painful condition and the dog needs to see a vet.
  11. Joint Guard is not a simple glucosamine product. It has a number of ingredients including Chondroitin, MSM, Vit C and a few others. There are many simple Glucosamine products available with glucosamine as a single ingredient. I don't find them to be of much benefit.
  12. They need to be pulped. Dogs digestive systems can't break down the cellulose in veg if they're not pulped.
  13. I know it can be difficult sometimes with a young child and a pup but children have to learn not to hurt animals. At 2yo your daughter should understand that the dog is sick and she is not to annoy it. The likelihood of her getting bitten for pestering a sick dog is fairly high. I hope the dog doesn't get the blame when it happens.
  14. Yep I'm confused too and getting more confused as I try to figure it out. You're probably right.
  15. Erny, I think the muzzle topic is in fact an 'off topic' post and not related to the incident being discussed or to the dogs in question.
  16. I understand and hear what you're saying Nekhbet but your dog should have been prevented from stalking the other dog. Stalking is a precursor to an attack, as did happen. I'm not surprised that the other dogs were not an issue. Your dog had set its sights on one dog and focused on that dog until he had the opportunity to attack. Had you put your dog on lead or locked him in a run the incident would have been prevented. If my dog was being stalked by another dog I would leave (after saying a few words to the owner) unless action was taken to stop the other dog from harassing her. I see it as my job to protect my dogs and keep them safe. I don't see the actions of your dog as being in any way protective. I hope your dog is ok and I hope the owner of the other dog doesn't have ongoing problems.
  17. I would say what happened has set this off. I hope your dogs don't have an ongoing problem due to this. I would be worried about leaving them alone now too. It's easy to be wise after the event but I would have packed my dogs in the car and gone home if another dog was stalking mine as you describe. The dog showed obvious intent and it was only a matter of time before it attacked. The owner of the offending dog should have removed their dog from the situation before it attacked. That would have been the sensible and considerate thing to do. If this dog shows up at the resort again I would be asking the owner/manager or who ever is in charge to have a chat with the owner before the dog gets the opportunity to harass another dog and to explain to the owner that her dog is probably not suited to be in an environment where friendly dogs mingle freely.
  18. I doubt a 1 year old toddler/baby could be expected to understand the concept of leadership or the Triangle of Temptation. The dog needs a safe place of its own where it will not be disturbed by the child. A crate is good. All contact between dog and child must be supervised by an adult and no one, child or adult, should pounce on a dog when it's sleeping. Please teach your child that she must never grab at a dog, ever. She obviously frightened the dog and it reacted as most dogs would. Children of this age can be very rough and must be taught how to interact appropriately with the dog. I would have reprimanded the child.
  19. What a smart pup you have. He has discerning taste.
  20. The numbers at some obedience clubs are definitely a problem. I was getting nowhere at our club and the day I found myself in a class of 45 dogs with one volunteer instructor was the last day I ever went to group classes. This wasn't the norm, one of the instructors didn't show up and our instructor took both classes. However there were usually 18-20+ in the class and we weren't learning anything. This was a few years ago and I wish I hadn't wasted time doing group ob. My dog was a puller when we started and still pulled after 8 months of classes. No one ever offered me a solution to the problem. By that stage the dog had grown and weighed nearly as much as I did. I was not in control. If she wanted to drag me around she was more than able. I went the way of a private trainer and we started on a Halti to allow me to at least control the dog. It was never suggested that she should remain on a Halti but it gave me control and taught the dog that the days of dragging me around were over. We have used a Martingale for the past few years and she will still occasionally start to pull but she responds to commands and stops trying it on. I don't believe the Halti is the demon of all training tools that some say it is. As long as proper training is given and proper fitting is done by someone who is familiar with a Halti I see no problem with it. Anyone who is trying to use it like a check chain has no idea how to use a Halti and shouldn't be using it. I don't believe they should be available to buy off the shelf but only from trainers experienced in their use. edited to delete a useless word.
