  1. Thanks Kavik - I just couldn't remember the ones at trianing ..... alzheimers setting in!!
  2. Why? A lot of ppl on here are my friends outside of the forum.... What kind of a professional do you suggest westielover? Your friend will be hard pressed finding a new home for the poor dog and she will probably realise that as soon as she starts trying. My suggestion of a steering her towards professional is twofold. Get a behaviourist in for a consult to assess the dog and advise if the dog is a candidate for rehab or not and how much work would be involved in retraining the dog. Doing this may also ease her mind about putting the dog to sleep if she’s not currently comfortable with the idea. She may not like the idea of having friends tell her to put the dog to sleep – perhaps she will heed the advice of a professional?? Mind you – I honestly wish that people would become more responsible when it comes to animals. It’s sad seeing threads like this where people have taken on a dog from dodgy ads/breeders/puppy farms etc and end up with these poor unsocialised, fear aggressive dogs. It annoys the absolute crap out of me. If I could cull these dodgy people from the human race I would. I hate these irresponsible people. Makes my blood boil!
  3. Steer your friend in the direction of a professional and not strangers on a dog forum.
  4. Do agility dog walks have cleats fitted to the angled sections?? I go to agility training every week and I just cannot remember!!!!
  5. Helen, if you're after some natural treats like kangaroo jerky or tendons for your beautiful Brittany's to munch on, I highly recommend 'dogbizztreats' on ebay. Here is a list of some of the stuff currently for sale. The quality of the jerky & tendons is OUSTANDING!!! I puchase roo jerky from a few different places but these ones are truly the best! Dog Treats Australia are pretty awesome too! ;)
  6. I am lucky enough to have a harmonious pack of 4. They are all male and happily live together (bar one recent incident which was probably more a case of over-excited play than a fight for leadership). When I used to foster - a female in the pack would unsettle things a little. Aren't bitches the natural leaders of a mixed pack??
  7. So sorry for everyone's losses My vet prescribed Rymadyl for 10 days for my westie but I declined. I had googled Rymadyl and found sites where it is referred to as ryma-kill! Rymadyl seems to have fatal effects - especially on labs & german shepards. Also, long term use of rymadyl will probably lead to a fatal ending for any breed of dog. I looked at alternate therapies for HD & osteo-arthritis and found acupuncture & liquid cumerone to be the best options for my westie. Liquid cumerone is made from tumeric which is known for it's anti-inflammatory properties. My 10 year old westie seems to be doing really well on this combination - so much so, that he has taken to rumbling around with my 18 mth old kelpie. You would never know that he suffered from any pain! I think in this day and age when there are so many drugs readily available - one should question their vet for alternate options as well as the truth about the long term effects of drug use.
  8. Being the owner of 2 westies myself (both male) - I am always being asked if they are twins! I can tell them apart no problems. However, I never really understood why people couldn't tell them apart until I met a woman who had 2 female westies ..... I struggled to tell them apart! It was only after meeting this woman's 2 westies that I understood why people couldn't tell mine apart. ;)
  9. When I'm in the study they sleep on the bed under the study table Or on the dog bed in the living room with fake mink blanket Or on the table (not mine these ones)!!
  10. Harminee thank you so much for my sig - it's AWESOME!!!
  11. My other 2 pooches - Spencer (spaniel cross) and Winston (westie). Many thanks in advance
  12. Would someone be kind enough to make a banner for me please First 2 pooches - Flynn (kelpie) and Riley (westie)
  13. Check out this little westie zooming around the agility course!!
  14. Lab x GSP Gosh it would be like having a perpetual puppy!!!! I was speaking to a lady a couple of months back about her lab - he was 2 year old and huge in stature. She was CALMLY telling me about his antics and how there is no garden anymore - it's just a dirt mine field. Apprantly the dog also knows how to open pantry doors and tupperware lids and helps him self to food of whatever he can get into. On top of that the dog does zoomies around the house and has left 2 gaping holes in her walls in the downstairs living room & hallway. Meanwhile, my jaw has dropped to the floor listening to all of this, she's chattering away about his antics as cool a cucumber and the dog is quietly standing a few metres away observing the other dogs running around the oval. I said - surely you're not talking about this quiet dog here - but she was!! I was gobsmacked at how naughty the dog was and how calm this woman was!!! I am blessed to have 4 dogs who have access to the house 24x7 and never destroy anything (touch wood!!). Oh Kirty - here's hoping that your dog will be okay and that he stops being so naughty. I reckon that kind of destruction would stress me out a bit. He's lucky you haven't dumped him at the pound like most other people probably would. Try to focus on his good traits (after you calm down ).
  15. Welcome back Jed. Good to see you're on the mend. It was heartbreaking to see what you have been through in the last few weeks. edited for spelling doh!
  16. Two of my dogs are west highland white terriers. When out and about with them, people often ask if they are twins!!
  17. What a beautiful boy with a beautiful smile ;) Rest in Peace Diesel So sorry for you loss kendall
  18. Oh Jane, I am so sorry for your loss ;) Rest in Peace Sally girl ... you were much loved by your mum and will be greatly missed
  19. I just flicked through my copy of this book and it loks quite good. Lots of diagrams and written to understand easily. Check out the table fo contents here .
  20. My 2 seniors go for annual check ups & bloods. As of last year the vet has the baseline for the blood profiles and can monitor any changes. The 2 younger ones go in if there is something wrong. However, as they age, they will also go in for annual check ups and bloods.
  21. Thanks everyone for researching this a bit further. Thanks to poocow for clarifying that the situation is above board. The pet shop girl did mention that the squirrels were sold desexed & chipped but didn't mention anything about a permit being required. Horus - you're probably quite right with regard to the price - I forgot that puppy farm puppies are sold for that much. It's very disappointing to know that these squirrels can be sold as pets. I was hoping they were doing it illegally and would get into strife!! One thing is for sure - I won't be buying any!!!!
  22. I was curious as to why a crowd was gathering around a cage at the pet store at Macquarie Centre today ..... went to have a look and was mortified to see a cage with a few 'Indian Palm Squirrels' !!! (They have puppies and kitten there of course as well). Aaaaanyway - I quizzed the girl behind the counter asking if they had to have a licence to sell these kind of animals and she said they do. Then I asked what they were like as pets and if they could be handled. She replied she wasn't sure what they were like as pets but would find out once they sold a few. Signs on the cage along the lines of 'we're scared and will bite'. The girl says that you can feed the squirrels through the cage wire but wouldn't really recommend handling them!!!!!!!! I googled Indian Palm Squirrels and found that they are actually a pest in and aren't supposed to be imported into Australia. A zoo in WA has them but there are apparantly none in eastern Australia. Anyway - I was really cranky, so called the Yagoona RSPCA and was advised they had numerous calls about these squirrels but the pet shop apparantly has a licence to import and sell them here and there is nothing the RSPCA can do about it 'much to their disgust'. :D Considering these animals are supposed to be a pest I find it unbelievable that this shop has a licence to import and sell them!!! They are wild animals and it seems that the only life they will have is in a cage and no doubt when people get pissed off with not being able to handle them - they will probably be released into the bush!! Anyone on this forum from AQIS who may know more about the import rules with regard to pests??? Oh .... the asking price is $1250 per squirrel - so at least that will put most people off!
