  1. My Girl has had C5 twice and no issues.
  2. Never had that problem with any of our foster dogs who spend the day in the yard and they typically toilet train in 48 hours. Mind you, we don't use the term 'outside'. Simply 'wees' when we go outside and then big praise.
  3. 8 weeks old....they don't have the control for toilet training at this age so you may need to wait another month until things really start heading in the right direction.
  4. Kids are probably the hardest to teach in my opinion, I think even as an adult it's hard to grasp the concept because as humans we're emotinal beings and we want to love and touch and make dogs happy.
  5. I'm not sure if I'm interpreting this the wrong way, but it sounds like she's getting upset because you're telling her how to handle the dog when she thinks she's doing what she's meant to be doing "being nice to the dog and letting it have some freedom". Have you tried to explain the reason why dogs need to walk on heel? i.e. dogs need to be part of a stable pack and know their place and being consistent with a dog allows the dog to happy & comfortable in its' environment, by walking the dog to heel you're showing the dog you're the pack leader and you're to be trusted with all the decisions so the dog doesn't need to feel as though it needs to make the decisions which will either be Flight, Freeze or Fight.....and on a lead a dog doesn't have much of an option to flight and freeze isn't going to work in most situations. If she likes to read, there are some great books that are easy reads and really interesting.
  6. Bugger that you're in Melbourne, I have a lovely Great Dane Girl here who looooooooooooooooves small dogs!
  7. We feed 1 x Thompsons Fish Oil Cap with included Vit E per 10 kg's every day and I swear by it, we used it on a previous foster as well in conjunction with Vit E applied to the skin (see photo below of foster dog and the difference in 30 days). In pets, fish oil is useful for reducing inflammation in pets with allergic skin disease and kidney failure. It possibly also helps pets with heart disease and osteoarthritis. Studies show that pets fed high doses of fish oil also have better control of cancer. Extra vitamin E is needed when giving fish oil on a regular basis as fish oil supplemented for many months can lower vitamin E levels which can be the cause of bleeding disorders (most fish oil supplements contain additional vitamin E for this reason.) Side note: You have to use the Fish Oil with Vit E included otherwise you'll need to give a Vit E tablet every 2nd day. White Shepherd, our capsules are clear with yellow liquid, the dogs love them and we don't have to resort to hiding them in their food. They capsule is safe for dogs. Luke, have you tried feeding pooch a non red meat diet? This is the one we've always used:
  8. Information around suggests the following: Raw fish can be fed in small amounts to your pet, but it is recommended to feed it in moderation as part of a fully balanced diet. Raw fish contains an enzyme that breaks down Vitamin B2, so feeding too much raw fish to your dog, can result in a vitamin deficiency. The simple and safe way to feed fish to your dog, is to cook it first, as the cooking process deactivates this enzyme and also reduces the risk of any parasitic infections being passed onto your pet from the raw fish. Raw fish, particularly tuna and salmon, contains large amounts of an enzyme called thiaminase. This enzyme breaks down thiamine in the food and, where raw fish is fed for a long time, cats and dogs can become quite unwell and develop seizures, stupor and coma. Death is possible. Thiamine is also known as vitamin B1 and it is an essential part of the diet of dogs and cats as they cannot synthesise their own. As for tinned fish, I wasn't able to find any comments about that.
  9. Chicken for a long while but have a look around at the butchers there are cheaper pieces of chicken such as the Thigh pieces.

    Dominance Issues

My girl is the dominant bitch around here but she has sometimes moved aside at the food bowl also in the early days of a foster dog.....they'll get themselves sorted in another couple of weeks
  11. I got my letter as well and shot them off an e-mail to ask about the fee as it's not mentioned anywhere. It probably will be the same as their in house course as you have to go to Melbourne for 2 x 1 week stints.
  12. That's Brilliant news, I remember reading your posts sometime ago that you were having some issues with your girl. It looks like you've worked bloody hard to get to where you are, keep up the great work!
  13. Skipy, From post 2 you have come off blunt & rude, perhaps you had not realised this? You have posted in a dog forum....a dog lovers forum, you haven't provided a reason why you want to do this operation and this likely concerned the members in this forum as to whether perhaps you were aware of the full implications of this surgery, so you didn't need to get defensive, they were only concerned for the welfare of your dog. Perhaps you should go and speak with your Vet considering they are the most knowledgable individual on this matter and can answer all your questions....I'm not sure why the vet wasn't your first point of call?

    Weeing On Clothes

If your puppy is peeing on your clothes, you puppy is starting to dominate you. Nip this in the butt quickly with the NILIF program and also ignoring puppy for 5 minutes on arrival home. (my opinion, works for us).
  15. Not sure why you're expecting such a young puppy to have bladder control, it's just like a new human baby. Keep up with the toilet training, when the bladder is strong enough, things will fall into place. Never take your eye off the puppy whilst inside and you won't have any accidents.
  16. I train the foster puppy everyday, nothing longer than 10 minutes. Then out on walks, it's a training walk so to speak. Then there's all the inhome training on how we would like to the puppy to behave and interact in the home. What I want out of it? For him to be a happy well balanced puppy that can utlise his mind in his new forevever home whether that be in agility/obedience/flyball etc.
  17. I have one of the small cameras and monitors you can set up to record on tv, on long play you get 6 hours I think or you could record onto DVD? More than happy for you to borrow it if you like.
  18. Stacey, I don't think you'd be breaking restrictions by filling a wading pool. If you are then so am I! ;) I've got two clam shell halves and I fill one with water a couple of times a week so the dogs can paddle. HTH. :D What was it about water restrictions that you were unclear on?
  19. Excellent, thanks heaps. Perhaps you could send me a PM with the details so I can include it in his adoption pack?
  20. Have no fear, having females most of my life, I rushed my first male foster to the vet when I saw 2 large lumps that were going up and down....my vet was ever so kind as to draw a diagram on her whiteboard and make be feel like a right knob......did I mention I even took a photo to give to the vet because the lumps were going up and down.
  21. I'm happy sad. Got my eye on a wee purebred border collie puppy that would be happy to come into foster care
  22. Kamuzz, he doesn't leave until next week. With us, he's just perfect, the best puppy every, well behaved, smart, a true gem!
  23. Apart from seeing your vet pretty pronto you may also like to visit the Health or Breeders forum.
  24. GREAT NEWS! Cobber has a new home! A couple called me this evening from the Sutherland Shire about Cobber and were desperate to meet him, they drove an hour here this evening to see him. They're perfect, previous Border Collie Owners who know and understand the breed, lead active lives, Cobber will go to work with his Daddy too and his Mummy wants to get involved with doggy sports YAY! Cobber goes to his new home next week. Thank you everyone for their help and suggestions. A big thank you to Vicky for showing & introducing us at the Castle Hill Agility club. This one I really bonded too and burst into tears when I got off the phone to them....just the prospect of him going to a new home sent me sobbing!
