  1. Acceptable to whom? A casual walk past my local dog park suggests that dogs tear arsing around with no heed to their owners is perfectly acceptable to the majority of park occupants.
  2. awwww bugger. IV fluids seem to be a key issue in recovery from parvo. Your boy is in the best possible place for a good recovery. Wishing him all the best. W
  3. The only thing I find surprising about such stories is that people are surprised by what happens in busy public offleash areas! There's a reason why many knowledgable dog owners avoid them like the plague.
  4. Junior Handler dogs don't have to be registered in the family's name to be used in JH competitions KC. The name of the dog used isn't even recorded. If you want to put the issue about being entered in the show beyond doubt, ring Dogs NSW and ask. Or ask on the Dog Show Gossip group for whatever state you're looking at being in. ACT doesn't have that rule by the way and it looks like Victoria doesn't either. Provided Josie is kept crated I can't see her being at shows being an issue. Most states have a rule that dogs not entered shouldn't be on the grounds but I've yet to see it enforced. I have one piece of advice though. The best practice your son can have for handling IS handling. In the ring, in the JH competitions. Provided he's got the basics of what is expected,, I'd be putting him in the ring. Most JH judges are very happy to give tips and frankly most local JH's competitions aren't fangs to the waist events. I don't see how practicing off to the side is necessary before he takes the plunge provided he can control his dog. Frankly, it sounds to me like Josie will be a better bet for him than a dog that wants to be anywhere but with him. He can't improve if he can't get the dogs' focus and I expect he'd find it very frustrating. Hit U-Tube for stacking tips - heaps of videos about that. My advice is that YOU teach the dog and your son follow on once she has the basics. There's a reason that juniors aren't permitted to show dogs under 12 months of age and part of that is that for the newbs, they show a dog that is trained in the basics of ring exhibition. Have you downloaded the ANKC Junior Handler regs and manual yet?
  5. Hope he recovers quickly. Dogs sure know how to worry their owners.
  6. Thank you. For what it's worth, I'm inclined to agree.
  7. The only sensible decision given the forecast. Good on the organisers for having the guts to make the call.
  8. If memory serves me correctly, it was a rescuer who the smart money was on for calling the RSPCA on Rozzie. Yep, had some very vigorous disagreements here and no doubt there are more to come. I doubt I'm on some people's fan list but I do try to stick to the argument and not get personal.
  9. And speaking of Chuck Norris Troy, twas a sad day he roundhouse kicked mention of two things off the forum.
  10. There have been occasions where the activities of the rescue fraternity made dog showing look like a church group. Who can forget when the RSPCA was called on Rozzie. By the same token, the way the DOL community has responded to members in crisis has been nothing short of inspirational. And of course who can ever forget the story of Leo the poodle. So thankful he ended up in a great home after all he had been through.
  11. Happy Anniversary to you too! That stolen Bulldog story was a disaster
  12. I gather they haven't had much luck assessing the IQ of cats because cats don't care much about performing tasks for reward. There are more than a few dog breeds like that.
  13. Yep. I remember Atlas! :) Oldest poodle is still in charge. I'd say youngest Whippet will take over when Ted goes to the bridge.
  14. It was also a very sad day when the roll eyes emoticon went to the bridge.
  15. Staffyluv: Happy Anniversary to you too Staffyluv! One of the sadder parts of long term membership is watching much loved DOL dogs go to the bridge - dogs like Ollie, Cordielia, Angus, Mooper's Jack, the Grotty Rotty, the gorgeous Rocco. I still have the Rocco and Ralph calendar I bought a few years back. But your point about friends is a good one. I've made some excellent friends in real life via this forum. :)
  16. Nawwww, thanks Barb. Ah yes, I've have had a lot of fun as Deshonko Kennels over the years. I have certainly managed to piss off my fair share of members over the years too but
  17. Which black one? Ted or Darcy? Oh I'm not sure about names but the one with the candy cane headdress. He just looks SO enthusiastic :) That's Darcy. The orignal dog of very little brain. I maintain to this day that his breeder dropped him on his head as a baby. His breeder (JAG, member here) swears she didn't but she would wouldn't she.
  18. I seem to recall you were the first target of Beau's Mum's ravings!
  19. Only this one and Poodlefan. ETA. I lied. I was telida for a short time. Oh and raineth, here's the proof of life you were after. Tribe looking thrilled to bits with their Christmas antlers this year. (FHRP sent it to me) From left Dodger, Ted, Lily (white poodle), Darcy, Herbie (collapsed Whippet) and Howie.
  20. PP told members here his wife had cancer and got quite a bit of support before being outed (was it Detective Sway?) Looking for the Beau's Mum one - very very bizarre, started off being about lost dogs, ended up with her threatening to cut off her hands to stop posting. If I can find it, I'll post it. Ah! I do recall something about that, Troy had to ban her to stop her becoming an amputee. I've searched - it's gonski. It got really weird for a while there.

  22. Sweet! Most dogs seem to be able to be weaned onto a pretty low frequency of tablet.. My poodle girl only has to have 1 tablet a month. I call them her lady pills. :)
