  1. Given that you have absolutely no idea what happened, I think any assessment of this incident is fraught. More facts and less judgement is what is required here. Sadly, I doubt they will be forthcoming.
  2. This recent thread lays it all out. And after that, find her an obedience trainer - stat. That's a lot of dog she's going to end up with and manners, especially onlead manners, are going to be vital.
  3. I buy all my treats online from the Australian Pet Treat Company and they are all made here in Oz. Rawhide? No way - its a choking hazard.
  4. My understanding is that nerve damage if present in an injury becomes permanent within days if not fixed. NO WAY would I be waiting for a routine vet appointment, particularly when the dog is clearly signalling it is in pain.
  5. FCI have Dachshunds in their own group. They are bred to work above and below ground and can be pretty feisty!
  6. And all for the sake of an unsupervised toddler and an unlocked gate I'm glad the owner finally dropped the lead. Whippets have the speed to get themselves out of most attacks but their fine skin and lack of body fat offer little resistance to bites Dogs are what they are - better management would have prevented this. I'm glad Tilly is recovering well physically but I have no doubt it will have left a toll on her temperament
  7. I have the standard Pet Mate door and haven't found it to be an issue. They give a good seal.
  8. Are you saying that you'd never allow your dog to be used to sire a breeder's first litter?
  9. That they won't give me the run around over paying the stud fee That they will not rip off puppy buyers and will take care to place the pups in decent homes and provide guidance to them. Also that they will provide decent care for the bitch and pups. And that any issues with the litter won't be automatically blamed on the dog. As Cowanbree says trust is the big one. I'd probably expect to know them or know of them to some degree.
  10. The ethics of the breeder are the first thing. That my dog has something to offer the bitch is next. That we can agree on terms is the final thing
  11. NO WAY should dew claws be left that long. Call another vet.
  12. I would suggest you take this question to the Dobermann thread but switching to adult kibble may assist.
  13. Have just found out that due to an error somewhere, Whippet Club have not been allocated a space. So sorry, folks we won't be there.
  14. If it hadn't been, I don't think Whippet Club would have committed. Whippetsus like to be cool.
  15. None of us bite! :) I swear I felt better immediately after my GB surgery. Just avoid lifting stuff. Like all the retail therapy
  16. I'll be on the stand both days with my dogs Come find out how scary I'm not in real life
  17. I swear by Blackdog Whippet Collars and being webbing, they are great for the beach or river. They wash up well. However, I do not leave them on my dogs when I am not around as they are martingales. I have never had one come off a dog. A fixed collar tight enough not to come off a Whippet style head is a serious choke hazard for a dog left alone. I'd not do it. Microchips have solved the problem of IDing dogs found without collars. I'd rather leave my dogs naked than risk a choking incident.
  18. The relevance to me is that from 1976 on, the hunt began to switch from Bassets to PBGVs - the question that begs to be answered is WHY?
  19. Most of those dogs show considerably more daylight under them than the Bassets in the ring around here. All bar 3 photos are of PBGVs anyway.
  20. Someone put up a photo of a working Basset hound bred for hunting and said a show bred dog would have trouble. They are both bred to standard. Indeed, the working type is probably more reflective of the dog that the standard was set to reflect than the bench dog. The difference is in interpretation.
  21. And after the crossbreeding and tweaking, they line bred to set type and then came the breed standards to define it in the ideal. What non-ANKC breeders do isn't relevant here. You don't breed at odds with a recognised breed standard as Canine Control members without breaching the Code of Ethics of your state. If people are not breeding to a breed standard, then they shouldn't be doing so under an ANKC registered prefix. It is still the measure of a dog how well it does the work and how well it meets a breed standard may be part of that. I don't care how fast a Whippet runs if it is as big as a Greyhound. Seemingly trivial breed standard requirements (like size limits) DO matter and a dog as big as a greyhound cannot turn on a hare like a proper Whippet can. A thorough understanding of the breed standard of your breed is essential. That doesn't just include the whats of the contents but the whys. If you think some aspect of the breed standard is unimportant, then in my opinion, you don't understand the standard properly. A "deep melodious voice" might not matter a damn in Bassets bred for harnessed tracking work but it matters a great deal in a pack hound bred to be followed on foot. This is why a definition of what "working ability" is becomes important.
  22. Rescue remedy and plenty of exercise would be my prescription. They may also be picking up on your grief.
  23. What do you mean by "working"? You've got a pack scent hunting breed - are you talking about tracking? Personally that would not prove to me that your dog is fit for purpose (it's not breed specific and certainly not hunting ) but I suppose its better than nothing.
