Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread

Well done Corvus, no dog should have problem with people cleaning. Jaje has been improving quite rapidly but I think today we finally crossed a line. We were walking along and he suddenly pulled and wanted to run. I hadn't noticed but a little terrier was off leash and coming down his drive to us. I offered Jake the peanut butter but he just wanted to run. We jogged away and the terrier followed us for about two houses. Jake was looking over his shoulder and finally slowed down and stopped about three houses away from the now stationary terrier. He sat down and started looking at me and nudging my leg. Thankyou I'll take that peanut butter now!! I'm so excited, he made all the correct decisions all by himself. He was able to take himself away and when he felt safe was able to ask for his reward. Maybe one day we will get to that obedience class. -

PM me your address and I'll post them off. I think it's foreseeable that that could happen if your dog bit hard enough. I had a small jar of peanut butter and Jake managed to bite the top with such precision timing he popped the bottom out. -

Looks like a rollerball deodorant bottle and has a liver or chicken flavored liquid so the dog licks the ball and gets the goop. The licking is supposed to keep the jaw relaxed and split the dogs focus. Treats were always hit and miss with Jake because he'd spit or bark them out plus getting your fingers snapped wasn't that much fun. All the training has also helped but this was really a turning point for us. He does occasionally bite down on the jar but since your hands are at the other end that's fine. Generally it's just easier to manage for me than treats because he stays focused on the jar and I can lead him away just by putting the jar slightly to the side of his head. I wish I'd started with the sticks because they're less than one calorie per lick but since he'd got the taste for peanut butter he wasn't that interested in the sticks when a dog was around. He has an addiction level focus on peanut butter. -

Hey BC if you'd like I can post you the lick sticks I have, I started with peanut butter and then tried the sticks but it was too late, he had already developed his addiction to peanut butter. Jakes being a gem at the vets, he's getting quite used to being there and seeing people think he's a well behaved dog just does not get old. Last night he happily hopped up next to me in the chair, then climbed over me to get on the table, it was probably not appropriate but I did laugh when he started putting his paws on the wall to try climb onto the shelf that had a jar of liver treats just out of his reach. Yes I do remember the warning about confident dogs leaping canyons Corvus, luckily Jakes a climber not a leaper. -
We moved into a house once that had a backyard infested with fleas. apparently the eggs can be dormant fir years and then they hatch when there's vibrations and signs if life. If you walked out you would come in with a dozen fleas. I sprayed with something I got from the hardware shop and that was it,no more fleas but I can't remember the name. Might be worth asking at bunnings.

There you go I thought you were all put back together too Wobbly. Thanks for that link I'm going to look into that for Tubby too. Good Luck for tomorrow. -
Maybe it was one of them, very unusual coloring definitely looked like a tiger and he was having a blast with the kids with him.

I'm wondering if Tiger or Tango came to live on Sydney's north shore because I may have seen them in the vet today. I think just having vaccinations because they were looking very happy and bouncy?

Yay, wobbleys back! -
I second the above post by Santo, I wish everyone had to look after an aggressive dog for a week so they could understand the potential for harm and how irresponsible owners impact people with difficult dogs. Contain and manage your dogs and cats I'd like their to be some wildlife left for my grandchildren.

My boy has behaviour issues so most of his food is given as treats out and about. I measure out a bag in the morning and he gets a bit of fish in the bowl. What he doesn't get on his walk is used in the afternoon session. This all worked fine until I found peanut butter beats being reactive to dogs, I smear a few spoons on the inside if a plastic jar and put it in the fridge so it's hard for him to get a lot when he's licking the jar but he is still getting more than is ideal. Although he's a bulldog I like to keep him fit and lean and I think he's a bit over at the moment but beating his behaviour issues trumps waistline in my case. I think it's quite unfair to take away a dogs ability to run and have fun because of their weight.

Had to take Tubby to the vet today. She asked me to lift him on the table. No problem for the little four wheel drive dog. Put the peanut butter on the table , patted the bench and told him up and he used the bench to climb up. Happily let her take a bit of the lump while he got peanut butter. If the world runs out if peanuts I'm in big trouble. He has to go back for surgery on Monday but they're letting me stay with him and they'll sedate him in the consult room so hopefully it will go smoothly. -

Thanks yes, mixed it up today and it was much better. Do like the idea of leg signals. I had sort of run out of hand ones, I'm not very imaginative. -

I grew up in Africa where Rotties are a dime a dozen, I find big barrely dogs don't scare me at all. Slim, athletic ones do scare me, maybe I believe I can outrun a Rottie. Boofa dogs are just a cuddle looking for a place to happen. -
Interesting question because with owning a reactive dog I spend a lot if time managing what he comes into contact with and that frequently involves not being able to go somewhere because despite it being an on leash area I know there will be "illegal" off leash dogs there. A dogs temperament should be known to the owner and the dog managed accordingly. If the owner is not up for it then unfortunately the dog should be removed. Likewise a person taking a rabbit to a park can foresee that dogs will attack it and if that happened I wouldn't necessarily blame the dog unless the owner maliciously ignored the danger to the rabbit. Situations are seldom black and white but people need to act sensibly in the grey areas. Last year my chicken was attacked in my garden, I had just gone in to the bathroom and Jake came with me. When we came outside I realized something was wrong and he took off into the garden. The dog, that I didn't sight, dropped Lola and ran. Had Jake caught the dog there would have been damage and I wonder if I would have been liable or whether I could have got back some of the $2000 that it cost me to repair Lola. There are three dogs that are regularly off leash in our area and I've seen two jump our 4 foot fences to come hunt the ducks that live here and have sent footage of one actually chasing ducklings to the council but nothing gets done.

First of many posts hopefully. He is a very noble looking dog.

So we have hot a little roadblock. So far I've been giving a treat after each trick..,right paw treat...left paw treat....2 paws treat. Now I'd like to fade the treats but poor guy gets very confused. If I skip a treat he starts giving me random tricks, mostly the ones that never fail, go sleep or play dead. Any tips or just keep going. -

I've had Jake 18 months, he came with a warning but I thought a few trips to the dog park to expose him to dogs and then obedience school and we would be fine. Big, huge life lesson is assuming you know anything about anything. I have learned a lot through him not least of all getting Internet skills and joining a forum and learning to use my camera and gating a really thick skin when people tell me I'm rewarding my dog for bad behaviour because I treat him when we see dogs, no matter what. Today's milestone, we got chased by two off leash black dogs, bolted down someone's driveway and hoped the oncoming cattle dog would draw them away. Nope the lady came with me down the drive, she had not noticed tubby madly licking and chomping on his peanut butter jar..cool. Around the next corner was a bling clad white horse, being used to escort a groom to his wedding at the temple.. ...I kid you not. Jake finished off the jar on that. -

Haha I'm teaching Jake Patty Cake. If you saw the little Yorkie video I laughed my head off at that and since its his job to amuse me thought he could give it a go. So far we have left and right claps and the two paw clap which has ended up very enthusiastic. He can't sit on his rear so he jumps up... brace yourself!
