  1. Yes we checked liver enzymes after a month and he was fine. I don't intend to keep him on it long term but it just struck me as odd that my vet, who in the past has offered chemotrherapy to treat an 18 month old mouse with cancer didn't give me the option earlier and was so negative when I asked for it. I confess I have no problem medicating for behavior either in dogs or people. If you need help you take it where you get it.
  2. I'm on the other side of the coin, after medication being suggested by my trainer I practically had to beg my vet to prescribe. In his opinion it was preferable to PTS. After about 2 months of Prozac I think it is really just giving us the little bit of an edge so that some of the training can stick. I really wish it had been suggested earlier, I may not have gone there straight away but it would have been good to have been aware of the option.
  3. Thankyou those are lovely always wished I could see down there.
  4. Chilled out but keeping and eye on things.
  5. Phew Snook you sound busy. Hope you feel better soon, well done Justice, you're a legend.
  6. I don't have a macro lense and probably wouldn't recognise one if I did!! I followed these two wasps around for about half and hour, one had killed the spider and the other was trying to wrestle it for the prey. So much fun I think maybe santa will have to bring me a macro in 2013, maybe the easter bunny will give me the skills to use it.
  7. We also had a better week- the reactive dog roller coaster. To my utter surprise Jake got the idea of clicker training with the box, I pretty much just click for whatever he does different from the day before. His pattern of reactivity this week seems to be to react hugely but settle quickly. We've latted so much he probably has whiplash. We played with his box at Vicki's, he was giving her slobbery kisses and showing a little bit of his clown side. We let him sniff Chilli through the gate and he got a bit freaked out and barked a bit but then quietened down, so we took him through and showed him the quarantine dogs behind the fence. He did freak out but we managed to get him back without too much trouble and he was loose leash most of the time and then we took him out and played box again. Must have been mentally exhausting for him, he fell asleep in the car and didn't bark at any of the dogs we passed and then could barely keep awake doing his TOT for dinner, eyes kept closing and head drooping.
  8. Well done its good that Scooter has a friend. I must say I'm sort of envious/ curious when I hear of counter surfing....sounds sort of fun!!
  9. Photo 2.......keep coming back and still funny. Thankyou FM Luka fixes are the best.
  10. Stansmum, feed Stan don't let him starve!!! Chicken, pumpkin, polaramine, fish oil tablet, yoghurt, Ham, lamb chunkers, 3 day old dug up revolting bone for 3 minutes until replaced by frozen bone, duck food, dog biscuits, Prozac, chicken pieces. Still to come "please hurry up and wee treats." Sounds lots but all cut up into treats for please behave bribery.
  11. Rascalmyshadow Mutley would get away with whatever he wanted in my house, what an adorable dog!!
  12. Yes Jed we are a lovely argument for the animal rights. Through Internet sleuthing I found out he is a new improved bulldog breed and was for sale as a breeding dog. So if you want we are also appropriate examples for the following arguments: Animal rights Purebred vs Crossbred BYB is bad Adopt from rescue rather than pound Numpty not paying attention to temp test Numpty ignoring pound lady advice But we hope to feature in the following: Old dogs can learn new tricks (owner and dog) Reactive dogs can be managed.
  13. I'm very easy to confuse, spent a long time thinking the local maremma was a long haired large Labrador!!!
  14. I'm confused, is Boston a Boston or a pug, (very easy to confuse). Love his long tongue. Jakes bling is from Karma collars, there was a previous post with a bull terrier called Apollo wearing this colour. Just had to have one.
  15. Well Jake has it all going on, eyes diverge 90 degrees, snorts like a pig, teeth stick out plus with his stance he's kind of head down ready to go looking. Oh and he's reactive, he was a rescue so can't be sure what's hapoened but he has scars so has been in a bad fight, may or not have been the instigator. Maybe with the face folds other dogs can't read them and the wider shoulders might make them appear to be about to launch? Still I do love my flat faces.
  16. I have a bulldog and Ive been told apparently other dogs don't like brachy breeds.
  17. I have a nester as well, round and round scratching the cushions until he had a nest. Every now and then it becomes a frenzy and he ends up with everything off the couch and he stands panting looking around wondering what hapoened.
  18. Yes I ditched the prong today, I think it was necessary when I first got it as Jake just paid no attention to me at all but since he has lovely leash walking and good manners until a dogs present, in which case he ignores it, I think it's done it's dash. I just took delivery of my lovely leather martingale in which I have every confidence I'm going with that for now. I have a harness as back up strapped to my waist belt but in my panic last week didn't switch to that. I have just ordered a dexil harness with a no dogs logo embroidered on it, if I could get a flashing neon sign for my head I'd do that too. I think the aim of doing the clicker is to just get myself and Jake doing something positive together and then we will try doing it at her house since he's now antsy about being there. I've decided to give him biltong only during his sessions with her, (dried SouthAfrican beef jerky stuff that smells). He loves it but it will be interesting to see if he becomes sensitized to that. When I walked him today he startled at every thing and everyone but I was able to do LAT on each occasion so at least that skill is back. Surprisingly he conditioned to the click yesterday. I did 4 short box sessions today. Just going for any look at the box, first session he got frustrated after a minute and lay down and snored. Second time he got a few clicks but seemed to suspect the box as being important. Third session he started offering different tricks, mostly barking( he has this as a trick, bad idea on my part), but he got in a few looks and fourth session straight away with looking until we had finished all his dinner and I put the box away. Very proud of tubster, did not think he would get it. Did you train going between your legs as a trick, I think he would feel more secure doing this, but how to do?
  19. Da bulldog got bling. So excited about Jakes new collar I also got the matching leash and I feel so "posh" when we go walking!! I am so happy we got puppies to watch grow, I realised that although I've had dogs since a child I've never had a puppy. Now I'm just too old to deal with poop so I shall enjoy watching them grow and leave the mess to others. 2/52
  20. I once bumped into the ranger at the park whilst washing off a big ouchie from fending a local off leash terrorist. I was rather upset and explained all my problems to him. He told me he couldn't take action based on my say so but promised to do a few patrols round the area. I did see his car around for a few weeks after that and a fair few of the regular street roamers did suddenly sprout fences in their yards. Maybe if you spoke to the ranger in a general way and explained your situation he might do this. A lot of their job I would imagine is tidying up the problems caused by irresponsible owners so they would understand where you're coming from. I too don't report specific instances since I need all the goodwill I can get from my community and getting an irresponsible owner off side could be problematic.
  21. I make stage and wedding jewellery and find a dark piece of velvet sets off crystals best, the velvet seems to absorb light making the crystals shine more.
  22. We have had a bad experience in which Jake learned that dogs do run around and attack you during which your owner then inflicts more pain by not allowing you to defend yourself but drags you away with a prong collar. This has set him back in seemingly all areas, he's throwing major tantrums if he thinks a dogs around, he needs to sleep in my bed and follow me to the bathroom again. We went back to training with Vicki last night and instead of being desensitized to dogs he's become sensitized to her house. So we are going to give any dog exposure a miss for a while and try doing Karen Pryors "101 things to do with a box". I've never done clicker training before and it's going to be a very different experience for Jake as he is a slightly suspicious, reserved dog so not really a dog that would wander over and investigate a box normally. I do like how the dogs on the video look so engaged and they look like they're really thinking, I would be very happy if I can get the little guy doing that. So has anybody had a similar setback through a negative experience, how did you recover and how long did it take? Any advice would be appreciated. I have also received my new stout leather martingale and I'm considering dropping the prong. His walking is very good now and I don't want to put him through another drag across the road. The pain did not deter him or control him in the emergency but probably heightened the negative impact. I'm so confused now.
  23. I use Vicki Austin located in Hornsby that is reasonably close. My dog is on Prozac but I relied on more expert opinions than mine for that. Good luck as far as I know it's important to address small issues in puppyhood at sensitive ages appropriately otherwise you can end up with big problems so I would definitely go to a good behaviorist. Your puppy looks lovely from your pic btw.
